Rating: Summary: Interesting Thriller Keeps You Going. Review: I decided to take a break from the norm and read a novel dubbed as a 'psychological thriller'. I liked this novel. Mainly I wanted to read about killer Hannibal Lecter since he seems to be a large icon in the horror/suspense world. This novel only introduces him. We do get a great thriller though. The chase to capture the killer in this novel does have it's suspense. I am looking forward to reading Silence of the Lambs now. If the movie 'Manhunter' ever comes out on DVD I think I will get it too, since it's the film based on this novel.
Rating: Summary: Good, not great Review: While this is a good book and does offer a few thrills I never really felt drawn in. I read it over a period of three months - putting it down and then picking it back up, etc. - and never really felt the urge to keep reading it on into the night (the calling card of a good book). If you're a fan of Harris' you will probably like it (but avoid Hannibal at all costs).
Rating: Summary: First book in the Hannibal trilogy Review: I read this book, and was I glad I did. In this book we are given our first look at Hannibal Lecter, before Silence of the Lambs. The author keeps us on the edge of our chairs as we follow Crawford and Graham in their pursuit of The Tooth Fairy. Never a dull moment in this book very good
Rating: Summary: Gripping, intense yet a bit disappointing Review: "Red Dragon" is a wonderfully intense psychological thriller, with plenty of obsence violence and "typical" Thomas Harris plot twists. The story of the ex-FBI agent stalking the "Tooth Fairy" or "Red Dragon" is extremely interesting and detailed, right down to forensic and crime scene evidence. My disappointment was two fold. First, Hannibal Lecter is hardly in the book - there are references to what happened between him and Graham, and a few in-cell visits. But I was hoping for more "pre-quel" information about Hannibal. I'd love to see a book by Harris on the story of Hannibal and Graham. My second disappointment was the ending. It seemed a bit stagey and was not nearly as detailed as the rest of the book. The sub-plot of the difficulties between Graham and his wife seemed a bit unnecessary, as well. All in all, a good read and a good scare!
Rating: Summary: Freaky Review: An excellent book. This book brings you into the mind of a psychotic killer so hold on tight. Mr. Dolarhydes thoughts are enough for a roller coaster of a ride that freaks out big time.
Rating: Summary: Scarier than Silence of the Lambs! Review: Thomas Harris has delved into the mindset of a serial monster so well it is chilling. I have never been scared by a book before but some of the pages in this book gave me the feeling you get when waking from a nightmare, the hair on the back of my neck actually stood up. If you liked SOTL read this book, it will terrify you.
Rating: Summary: A thrilling book perfect for mystery and horror fans alike. Review: Harris knows his stuff, there is no questioning that. No one holds a candle to his technical detail of forensic investigation. Francis Dolarhyde comes off spookier than Hannibal Lector himself, and in some ways even more intresting. This is one of the few books that will make you feel compassion for a serial killer. The biggest surprise to me was the amount of graphic violence contained in Red Dragon. While I figured it for a dark psychological theme, I didn't expect the high volume of blood and guts(not that I'm complaining, it really ups the suspense value.) I read this one in two days, it's easily addicting. I wish I could have found it in hardback, because it's definately a keeper.
Rating: Summary: Not great, not terrible Review: This could have been much worse! The only problem was the ending, which seemed hurried and slapped together due to a deadline. Too bad, because the actual 'investigation' was engrossing - though the denouement was so disappointing that in my disgust I forgot that I actually enjoyed the rest of the book. If you're into forensic investigations, this book is for you. It was too technical for me, not enough action, not enough profiling . . . I won't be reading another. Though it was good while it lasted (see above: Four stars).
Rating: Summary: A great horror book Review: The Red Dragon by Thomas Harris is probably one of the scariest, graphic books ever written. It's a thriller through all 454 pages of it. The setting is modern day in Virginia. The Red Dragon is the prequal to The Silence of the Lambs and the detec tive, Will Graham, is asked to come back to the F.B.I for this special case. This book is about a retired F.B.I investigator, Graham, who is asked to come back to the F.B.I for this case. In this case, the killer, who works in a film developing lab, stalks out his victims after he watches their home videos. His name is Francis Dolarhyde and he feels that he has a Red Dragon inside of him that makes him do the horrible things he does. He is influenced by a famous painting called "The Great Red Dragon". Once you see the cover, which has a picture of a red dragon, you will realize how scary this book actually is. I had to rate this book 5 stars, and I would definately recommend it to someone. So, if you want to read, in my opinion, the scariest book ever written, The Red Dragon is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining psyco-thriller story Review: I was expecting to read more about Hannibal Lecter, since the book was marketed using his character. No regrets though when I realized that Hannibal was just a side character & the plot focused on the thoughts & emotions of Francis D. a.k.a. the Red Dragon. One feels pity upon reading through the past of D. -- his physical looks, the way he was treated by his own family. It makes me think that lack of love can mold someone to become a person full of hate & anger. I thought (& hoped so) that Rebecca would bring out the good in him. Well, somehow, it did, but the evilness & hatred was way deep down & nothing cold stop him from killing or destroying anyone. All in all, the book was entertaining. If you're a fan of psycho-thriller books, you will surely enjoy this. The twists were quite predictable though, as I anticipated that it was just too easy to end things up the way it was presented.
