Rating: Summary: Thumbs Up for "Red Dragon" Review: I received this book on a Monday and finished it Friday. It isn't terribley long. And it is one of those books that you can't put down. When I had any spare time I read the book. In a way, its almost like reading a true crime story. It is exciting and it held this reader's attention very well. It is not as gruesome as "The Silence of the Lambs" or "Hannibal". But it is exciting and I highly reccomend it.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: This was the first Thomas Harris book I've read, and I can't wait to red the rest. The plot was completely engrossing, and the characters were awesome. I can't say enough about how much I liked this book, so I'll just say one thing: read it!
Rating: Summary: A Physically Gripping Masterpiece from Thomas Harris Review: As I began reading this piece, I soon realized that I couldn't put it down. It seemed to want to be finished. I have to admit that I know how Francis Dolarhyde grew up; I feel an almost kinship with his plight as I too have grown up with his torment and subjected predjudice. His life was very well-written and portrayed the brutality that society can inflict upon those who are "not so perfect" and the results of its actions when directed to one so susceptible. It is a book that all can learn from. Will Graham's character was intense as well. He too had his demons to deal with and he too had the stigma to bear of being different; his character suffered deeply in the end, not what I would have expected. Thomas Harris has provided us with a piece that can grip you body and soul if you let it. Just as with Silence of the Lambs, it pulls you in until you understand where each player is coming from, what each on has to gain and lose. Very well written and presented. I look forward to any new works that Mr. Harris has in store for us. Encore!
Rating: Summary: Good Story, Not So Happy With Ending Review: I enjoyed seeing how Hannibal Lecter came into being, yet was surprised at how little he had to do with the story. I guess I was used to his overwhelming presence in "Silence of the Lambs". I would like a "prequel" to really get into the Hannibal storyline more! But this is another example of Thomas Harris scaring the bejeezus out of you & you coming back for more! The story is plausible, realy & frightening, but I think at the end, it got a bit "Stephen King" & wasn't as realistic as I would have liked. I turned the page, waiting to see who was going to make a mistake first, Francis or Will Graham. I'm still kind of waiting to find out! I recommend reading this series of books in order and you'll see the progress of evil in Hannibal Lecter & the criminals he helps to catch.
Rating: Summary: Red Dragon Review: I read this book in 1993 and I have been trying to remember the title since it scared me so completely. Also, I wanted to give the name of it to a friend who told me that "Along Came a Spider" by James Patterson was scarey. That book can't even compare! I lock, relock, recheck my doors every night still. And since the killer got in through a sliding door (by cutting a hole in it), I now have a burglar alarm on all my doors. No other horror, psycho thriller book I have read even compares. This is the best. Buy it!
Rating: Summary: Red Dragon Roars! Review: A superb thriller by one of the masters of the genre. Thomas Harris takes us into the lives of some horrific criminals & heroic crime investigators. Harris weaves his plots, characters, & their backgrounds so well.....that I almost, ALMOST, found myself feeling sorry for the ghastly "D". The way his Grandmother had treated him, his disfigurements, & insecurities rang so true with me. I also craved more about the gracious yet gnawing Lecter. I suppose, this would be one of the authors goals.....just how well do we allow ourselves to know our darker side? Having read, "Silence of the Llambs", "Hannibal", and "Black Sunday"; one thing is for certain, I will gladly wait another 10 years for an additonal Harris mind-delving masterpiece. Another great graphic gripper is, "Messiah", by Boris Starling.
Rating: Summary: A great book that just kept getting better. Review: I got the book Red Dragon because I enjoyed the movie silence of the lambs and the pure evil that is Hanibal Lecter. I was a little disappointed that Lecter was a rather minimal character. However taht is where my disappointment ended. Will Graham is a truly engrossing character and the villain Francis Dolarhyde almost made you feel sorry for him. All in all a great fast read that keeps the pages going until stunning twist and a startling ending.
Rating: Summary: Red Dragon; Best Horror Book EVER! Review: Red Dragon is an incredible heart-racing book about FBI forensic analyzers trying to catch a Psycho serial killer. Great Book. You must read this book at some point in your life. The details Harris writes about our morbid and realistic. After reading this incredible book you become infatuated with it. Thomas Harris is in my opinion the best writer of the 1900's and so far the 2000's
Rating: Summary: One of the best of its type Review: In some ways, this book is just as good as "The Silence of the Lambs." I guarantee that you'll remember Francis Dolarhyde long after you've forgotten Buffalo Bill. Hannibal Lecter is a supporting character in this story, but he's still as strong as ever. The hero of "Red Dragon" is Will Graham, an FBI agent. To solve these murders, he must get close to the dark side -- so close that it's scary. He pays a heavy price for his work. Thomas Harris often writes about horrible things, but without sensationalizing them. Maybe it's because of his journalism background, or maybe that's just his style. He's no slouch at characterization, either. Also, he doesn't underestimate the intelligence of his readers. He drops in cultural references without patronizingly explaining them. Many other writers have tried to imitate Thomas Harris. They forget a few rather important things -- style, intelligence, characters, and psychological depth. A serial killer novel without those things is a dud. Anne M. Marble Reviewer, All About Romance
Rating: Summary: A Great Book Review: I enjoyed Red Dragon as mauch as I did The Silence of the Lambs or Hannibal by Harris. After reading the reviews, I was hoping that Dr. Lechter would play a bigger role in the story, which was not case. Still Harris maintained the excitement throughout the book. Although the expected ending was pretty 'uneventful', the book was very pleasant to read.
