Summary: Great for a suspense novel
Review: This is a suspense novel that actual brings suspense. Through most of the book you really don't know what is going to happen next and you really can't wait to see. The character of the Red Dragon ( a Norman Bates meets Jack the Ripper)is written so effectively you don't know whether to hate him or root for him. The only down side to this book was the ending. I found it a bit cliche and a little predictable. Can't wait to see the flick based on this ditty - Manhunter.

Summary: Horrible Subject Strikes Back Again...
Review: 'Red Dragon' is probably one of the most authentic fiction work available on Psychology.I felt Will Graham as the best character in the book. His way of getting into the mind of Dolarhyde was amazing (though painfull to Will). The process of getting the feel of mentality of the killer & finally finding him out was well described. However, the story-line is not original. The same kind of killers' mentality was beautifully explained somewhere in 1958 in the fiction "NOT SAFE TO BE FREE" by "JAMES HADLEY CHASE", wherein the case of a strangled starlet was excellently described! Even then, Thomas has written in a very elaborative manner especially the obsession of Dolarhyde towards the painting - The Red Dragon... This book alarms us regarding the gradual disintegration of the society where we are having a lot of children from the unmarried mothers. What contributions can you expect from these children once they grow-up towards the society? Just because of the (mis?)adventures of our younger generation, the society is getting these abnormal products. Come on.. you just can't blame these people and the only act remains with us is to eliminate these products. Basically the problem doesn't lie with Dolarhyde or Dr.Lecter type of people, it lies somewhere else and that is within the society! That's what Thomas tried to explain. Anyway very good work by Thomas.

Summary: Beauty is only as deep as the knife will stab...
Review: "Red Dragon" is a story about ugliness.

A child is born illegitimately during the Great American Depression with horrible facial birth defects. He is abandoned for being ugly. He is ridiculed for being ugly. He is mistreated for being ugly. He is hated for being ugly.

And the world is surprised when he returns the favor.

Having made the mistake of first reading Thomas Harris' other works, "Silence of the Lambs" and "Hannibal," I am so very sorry that I wasn't acquainted with this story sooner. I am also sorry for the sideways glance or the murmured comment that I may have issued when I came across that rare individual that doesn't quite measure up to our socially accepted standards of physical beauty. It wasn't until I read this fictitious story that I ever considered just how often someone who is considered "unattractive" is reminded that genetics were not favorable at the time of their conception.

The Harris style of writing presents no new twists. The audience is aware of "who done it" throughout the entire story. Dear reader does, however, have questions that need to be answered and Harris obliges those inquiries... the ones that begin with "Why?" By the end of the story, dear reader can only take sides with the so-called "criminal" and ask the characters who fear him, "Why not?"

Summary: A great read!
Review: This is one of those rare mystery/thrillers that doesn't lose it's edge, and doesn't go overboard with crime technicalities. Will Graham was an excellent protagonist, and I wish he would have played a part in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and HANNIBAL. RED DRAGON like the rest of the Hannibal Lecter novels has a very exciting plot, and has one of those surprise endings that you didn't expect. However, it also contains exceptional, realistic dialogue that most writers don't accomplish. Harris gives each character a unique personality, and writes them to the fullest. I still think HANNIBAL was the best in the Lecter series, but RED DRAGON is, obviously, one you won't want to miss :)

Summary: Refreshingly Unconventional
Review: Once I found out that "Hannibal" and "Silence of the Lambs" were a part of a series that began with "Red Dragon", I immediately started at the beginning. I was glad I did! "Red Dragon" set you in the life of a crazy man who is a product of his unstable childhood. I could not believe I was actually enjoyed learning about this man and the crafty way he was murdering (and torturing) whole families--including the pets! The end was also a great shock and reminded the reader that everything is NOT what it seems. This book originally came out in the 70's, which is indicated by the use of the word "Negro," however, the book and its content was before its time. But 10 years later, when Harris came out with "Silence of the Lambs," he doesn't have the same, uh, flavor and spirit. "Red Dragon" is surprisingly great and an engrossing page-turner. Too bad it was a one-hit wonder....

Summary: The movie was much better
Review: I had such high hopes for Dragon just because I liked Manhunter so much, but this book fell far short of my expectations. Sure, it does an okay job of introducing Graham and Lecter himself, but I was not impressed. Every line I read throughout the book just reminded of how much better the movie was. But that's ok, thankfully I was already familiar with Thos. Harris's work through SotL, the novel. Talk about a fantastic, spine tingling, page-turning, keep you up all night just to finish reading it tale! The third novel in the series, Hannibal, was a great background on the good doctor himself, and was great for bizarre tales of torture, but unfortunately, the conclusion seemed like Thos. Harris wasn't interested in having to continue to have to develop the Starlett character. Hopefully Hollywood will do a better job when the movie is released.

Summary: Thrilling!
Review: Red Dragon. By Thomas Harris. Dell Publishing, May 9, 2000.

In Reviewing Thomas Harris' Red Dragon, I found it to be a riveting, clever, and highly believable story that would appeal to adults and older teens. The book captures the reader's attention on the very first page and holds it to the very last page. But more than simply holding the reader's attention, Red Dragon takes the reader on a multi-emotional ride that the reader cannot wait to start again after the last page is turned. Red Dragon is the story of, forensic expert, Will Graham's quest to capture a terrifying serial killer that hideously bites, tortures, and murders entire families. Graham enlists the help of the now jailed (but still dangerous) Dr. Hannibal Lecter to solve the murders, but that choice may prove to be a deadly mistake. The story is clever in that the forensic reconstruction of the murderer's actions is logical and believable. The behaviors of the criminal investigators, psychopathic killer, and the reporters are very realistic. I felt as if I was actually witnessing the events as they unfolded rather than simply reading a story. Finally, the way in which Harris takes the reader along with the forensic expert to solve the murders makes the reader feel as if he/she is actually "on the job" of the investigation. The reader then finds out about the serial killer's life and understands how he came to be such a monster. For a brief moment, I even felt compassion for him. Red Dragon is a must read for anyone who likes mental puzzles, is interested in the human psyche, and/or simply likes an emotional thrill ride. It will let you see through the eyes of the forensic expert and let you into the mind of the serial killer. Red Dragon is so realistic that the reader will forget that the story is only fiction.

Summary: A dragon with a weak flame
Review: Writing an inside story about the delusions that help shape an evil psyche, Harris set himself inside the murderer mind. Pure psychological stuff, I dont see neither a thriller nor a true crime, kind of plot .The action progresses slowly, far from the pulse of a rollercoaster ride, It would have been more dynamic and entertaining if the author had included rich action packed suspense, with some turns and provived better forensic elements with scientific explanations to complement the events, I cannot understand also why Harris has devoted so many chapters to develop the murderer background in the middle of the book, shifting the focus, and not just from the start. Graham the retired brainy cop back on track following the clues to catch the assasin, looks promising at the outset but then dissapoints (I could not smell a cop in him), his lackluster role revolves around his private conflicts with the job due to past experiences, being unable to be shown as the actual antagonist to the bad guy. The ending, credible, was great and helped to enlighten the tale but for the most part, the story was not appealing and the narrative at some points confusing and difficult to follow.

Summary: First in the "Hannibal Lecter" series
Review: Very interesting novel. It did not feature Lecter prominently like I thought but alternated between Graham's personal and professional life. Suprise ending was really suprising!
