Rating: Summary: Thomas Harris's Best Ever! Review: Red Dragon is one of those books you won't forget for a long time. The reader is taken right into the mind of the killer. Experiencing his emotions, you may find yourself feeling sorry for him, then be repulsed by his visciousness. He is the most powerful and memorable evil character I have encountered.Hannibal Lecter is introduced in this novel and plays a similar minor role as he does in 'The Silence Of The Lambs'. For me, this is definitely Thomas Harris's best.
Rating: Summary: gruesomely violent Review: You are ready to sleep in bed on a warm summer night....the inside of your house is cozy and cold, the air conditioning making it feel like a hotel room. In the middle of the night, there he is, a stranger in your bedroom. He kills your husband with mirror shards, shoots you, and goes after your children. You can't save the darlings. He then comes to you last and finishes you. That person was the Tooth Fairy, aka Red Dragon. Thomas Harris has never made a serial killer so brutally terrifying, well, in my eyes. I've read about them all, Dahmer, Bundy, Lucas, Ramirez..those were all little kids compared to this sucker. I love the movie that was made in 1986 taken from this book, Manhunter...visually stunning. Tom Noonan played a great Francis Dolarhyde, and I'm equally excited Ralph Fiennes is going to play Francis in the remake. If anything, read this first. When I saw Manhunter the story was too confusing, so I had to read the book to understand it. Manhunter isn't as gruesome as this book, except when you see the bedroom with the family's blood all over the walls >:).....this isn't to be read at night.
Rating: Summary: Quality Fiction! Review: I just finished reading this novel, and I have to give Mr Harris a high-five! I loved this book because of the precision and detail accorded forensics, and the invitation of me, the reader, into both the protagonist's---and villain's---mind. I read Hannibal and wrote a negatively scathing review of Harris' writing style. But my opinion has changed after reading The Red Dragon. I enjoyed the caustic humor as he dished it out in the most unlikely spots. Good work...I mean, great work...Mr Harris. My eyes are now set on Black Sunday. Thanks for entertaining me.
Rating: Summary: red dragon Review: The book was very good.It was the first book I've ever been able to finish reading.
Rating: Summary: Based on plot and not too much on description. Review: The book is based on plot as it is well thought out. The descriptions are not the best but just below medicore. Thomas Harris does his stories well as he does not show a onesided story, example the good guy is good bad guy is bad end. In his story the good guy isn't so good and the bad isn't bad, in other words he tells you about there lives and you get to know about them more, you can then draw your own conclusions. Cause the killer, Francis, i kinda felt sorry for in the end. He also shows the brilliance of the Red Dragon. And also shows how damn scary Hannibal is,don't ever get on Hannibal's bad side with the little freedom he has, he goes a long way in trying to kill you. Ending with this the plot is good the descriptions so-so. But all in all a great book.
Rating: Summary: Better than Hannibal! Review: Don't read this one to close to bedtime. It's very disturbing in parts, but Red Dragon draws you in from the first pages and the action never lets you relax. Similar to Hannibal, not one for those with weak stomachs.
Rating: Summary: most scary book Review: 10 years ago I read Red Dragon. I had read all the Stephen King books and others and had never heard of Thomas Harris. When I finished this book at 11PM, in my cozy living room, my 2 teenage sons and 8 year old daughter upstairs asleep, I COULD NOT MOVE OUT OF MY CHAIR. When I was finally able to move and go up to bed, I left on all the lights on the first floor and my bedroom light stayed on and I slept (fitfully) that way for weeks. Have always said it was the "most scary book" I have ever read. Well, last week I bought it for a friend's birthday. Started to read it again, can't really remember every detail of the ending. AGAIN - because it is so realistic and believable, I am not sure I can read it again!!!!! HOLD ON TIGHT!!!! AND LEAVE THE LIGHTS ON!!!!!
Rating: Summary: thrilling Review: I thought this book was very well written. Thomas Harris does a very good job on this. I thought he did an exepctional job with the characters. Francis Dolarhyde combined with the red dragon, was peculair but good twist, and how he describer his childhood was very good. I especially like the character of the mysteyrious Will Grahmn, and the how he author gives you a different feeling for this character then any other. Overall i thought this book was the best in the hannaibal lector series.
Rating: Summary: Am I the only one who read this book before Silence? Review: I read this book when I was 14. I'm 15 now, and I have also had the priviledge of reading Silence of the Lambs. Red Dragon was an excellent book that took the reader through the mind of a submissive man tortured by his past, and an FBI agent through his own unsettling abilities. Will Graham is the best Jack Crawford knows of, but being the best comes with its flaws. Will Graham can get into the mind of a sociopath, and that is, as we all know, a very scary place. Harris takes us through the twists and turns of a painstaking investigation with precision that has yet to be matched in my opinion. The details in this novel are astounding. The evidence all matches up and all the strings are tied at the end. While we don't see Hannibal very much, it is our introduction to the doctor that left us hanging to read Silence, wanting to know more about him. Not at all sure, just as Harris wasn't at all sure, that Dr. Lecter can't see us.
Rating: Summary: Gripping -- Gruesome -- Genuine -- A lexicon of adjectives! Review: "Red Dragon" was a brilliant work of a cat-and-mouse drama. When the book says "Meet Hannibal Lector for the first time!" -- they mean it. Although Hannibal's part is extremely limited, and only is in a few chapters, Harris sets us up for a repetative character that will never lose hype in his future novels. "Red Dragon" was made into a horrible, low budget, typical 80's movie named "Manhunter". The author of such other great, critically acclaimed work including "Black Sunday", "Silence of the Lambs", and "Hannibal" is a genius at getting inside the characters minds and really opening them up to the reader. In this particular novel, Harris explores the killer, Francis Dolarhyde's mind. He goes into his past, upbringing and you actually can feel sorry for the killer. This novel is full of spirit, suspense and is written craftsmanly and well. Thumbs up!
