Rating: Summary: Another LKH book devoured. Review: While my favorite series of LKH remains Anita's, I am enjoying watching Merry's world unfold, too. I didn't find the book to be overly complex as some other reviews indicate. I also disagree that Anita & Merry are indistinguishable. I find the characters to have similarities but very prominent distinctions. I plowed right through and can't wait for the next installment - of course, the next Anita will come first if Laurell's pattern remains unchanged. It is so hard to wait a whole year for another book. But I'm glad she takes the time she does for the development of each installment.A recommended read for those who have read the first two and enjoyed them.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic,Can't wait for BOOK#4................ Review: I just recieved this book a few days ago and threw myself into my own private space and devoured this book in a short time. Enjoyable, sad, funny and enthralling emotions with Merry and her Ravens. After reading this book,my respect went up for Andais the Queen of Darkness. She now understands Merry and respects her,and maybe hoping that Merry will be Cel. I think also she knows what Cel could do to the Fae and what horrors could come to pass. This book is now my favorite in the series, and have one question. How long before BOOK#4 comes out? I can't wait to see what happens next with Merry and her growing GUARDS and even making friends and more enemies. I highly recommend this series.
Rating: Summary: The lack of plot is disturbing Review: I give this book 3 stars because I love Laurell K Hamilton, Merry Gentry, and the other two books in the series a great deal and just can't bear to give her 1 star. That said..if you like a book that's just one baby step away from porn and don't care about plot, go for it! The first 2/3 of the book really have no plot whatsoever. It's mostly sex, kinky sex, power-sex, and more sex. I could forgive that if the last 1/3 of the book hadn't been so good..we finally get some plot, some mystery, some deductive reason, all the stuff we love in a Merry novel. I won't give it away but the ending of the book left you sitting in your chair saying "What?" It seemed like there should have been a lot more to that book than what there was. So, it gets 3 stars...the average of 5 stars for the last 1/3 of the book and and 1 star for the first 2/3. It was probably the most disappointing Laurell K Hamilton I've ever read made worse by the fact that I waited so long for it.
Rating: Summary: Not Your Average Love Story, Thankfully!! Review: I am a huge fan of Laurell K. Hamilton, and I love to read her books. This one was no exception. It was a fast read for me, I can never slowly read her books. It was a little involved in places, but over all, I would highly recommend this book. This is a book that I will read over and over. It is not your average love story, but that's the whole point!
Rating: Summary: frustrated Review: Frustrated because Hamilton is a decent writer but this book did not showcase her talent (as the last Anita Blake book did not). And is it just me or is Merry turning into another Anita? I wish the author could give us meatier stories. Buying her expensive hardcover books is becoming a little hard to swallow.
Rating: Summary: Merry Genty, back at it again........ Review: The third book in the Merry Gentry series is the best yet, and promises more good things to come with future adventures. Although they pale in comparison with the Anita Blake series, they're still a good series, dripping with the usual court and politiacl intrugues, magic, and of course, sexual intrigues. Its a good book, the only dissapointing aspect being that it really isn't long enough.
Rating: Summary: Wait for Paperback Review: Ok, I am a huge Laurell fan and have read both series over and over again. I pre-ordered this book before it was even released and I was so excited to get it in the mail. It took me less than 2 days to read and I agree with a few other reviews that it was confusing and winded in the first three quarters of the book. I still love all the characters and will continue to read the rest of the series but Laurell if you read these reviews, PLEASE MAKE THE BOOKS LONGER! This one could have had way more added to the story like the trip to the Goblin court or a trip to the Seelie Court. For $36 Canadian, I expected more. I look forward to the next Anita. A recommended read but don't rush to buy it.
Rating: Summary: Time moves slowly for Merry and her MerryMen Review: Like a good Chinese Dinner ...... Left me hungry an hour after I finished reading ...... Ok so it did only cover a couple of days, but when you consider that she had to get some of the events from "A Caress of Twilight" resolved, well she did clear some of that up; OK not all but we are closer to understanding what the "Nameless" did to each of them. Frost has always been a favorite of mine but I found his attitude tiring, but finding out about his true origin was great. There were surprises in store for some of my other favorite Raven's and the new guards will prove to be entertaining in the next title I'm sure. I am curious what the goblin twins will have in store. Not making it to the Goblin court or the Seelie court was disappointing in this book, but it is something to look forward to. I have been a fan of LKH for quite some time now. Taking on two series is a phenomenal task especially when they are in two different worlds. A book a year from each series is more than her readership should ask for but that is what she is attempting. I look forward to each of her titles with anticipation. I think some readers expect months/weeks to take place in one title and with Merry Gentry things are moving slowly. Afterall when you are immortal like the fey there is all the time in the world.
Rating: Summary: oh sigh :-( Review: I devour everything Hamilton puts out. Her books are a great distraction as well as mind-candy. I even put in an order for this book before it was even published, then eagerly awaited its arrival. All that anticipation ended like a balloon with a hole. The story of Merry picks up with her harem (um, I mean guards). The boys are back, trying their best to impregnant their (hopefully) future queen. This is where everything gets difficult. You see, I want to explain the plot, but there is no plot to explain. Scenes of the book move from one sexual romp to another, even going as far as girl on girl. Perhaps I'm just too innocent, but that was a new one for me. About half way through the book, the reader finally gets excited, because it sounds like something is actually going to happen. Merry and her men have an agenda. They are to visit the Seelie Court, then King Kurag (who want her to attempt procreation with a few of his creepy dudes), then on to the Unseelie Court. Yeah! Possible conflict, possible suspense, possible action! Then just more sex. Oh, well. It won't stop me from reading her books, since I truly do love the Anita series and did love the Merry series. I hope Hamilton does read these reviews and perhaps she will take a little more time in building up the elements of plot in her future books so that instead of a feeling of dispointment, we can all lay back in the afterglow. (No pun intended!)
Rating: Summary: too much is getting to be too little Review: If reading this book was almost enjoyable, reviewing it is rather frustrating. I find it quite difficult to explain the particular love-hate feeling I had for this much awaited third installment. I do love the concept of the series and the main characters. Magic, beautiful sidhe, court intrigues, sex - what more to get me going?... Actually, I really felt there should have been a bit more in this latest book to really get me going, and I don't mean pages. The first book set up the big questions: Will Merry get a child? Who's her consort going to be? What will happen when Cel gets released? The second book was, inevitably, a transition to future books: Merry got more power, her personal relationships got more complicated ... All the while the reader hoped the third book would eventually return to the main questions. The third book doesn't. If at all possible, it conveys even more the "transition" feeling of the second book. We are still at the stage when the chess pieces are layed out on the board, with two more months to go until Cel becomes a major player again. Merry gets even more power and her personal relationships get even more complicated. (I really wonder how many more potential consorts could be piled up on her bed). She doesn't even make it to Taranis' ball - that's still 2 days away, I mean, one book away. Sorry, readers, this time we don't get even the customary detective mystery - just the teasing of "more to come in the future". There are some nice things in the book. I am happy with how Merry develops, quite pleased that her personality and demeanor are a lot lighter than Anita's latest. Rhys and Nicca get more attention (nice), Kitto more power, Frost's past more explanation (bizarre, but interesting). The whole history of the chalice and what it portends for Merry in terms of her magical power is an intriguing addition - although, like many other details in LKH's latest books, it sort of stays "on hold", making the reader hope the (yet) next book will actually explain it all (judging from the latest trend, I am assuming it won't). The not-very-nice thing is that the manner in which the story unfolds is terribly unfocused. Gone are the times when Ms. Hamilton's books were action-packed and self-contained. Whatever "action" there is in here, it only happens towards the end and is quite anticlimactic. Many new characters are squeezed in the last third part of the book, all of them potentially major, all of them potentially a future consort, as if to warn us that the next book will tease the reader even more and still nothing will happen. If this book actually had a plot, I would have gotten quite interested in it. Since the plot was mainly non-existent, I just relaxed, enjoyed whatever I could enjoy of the book, and hated that I really couldn't love it. Not as bad as "Cerulean Sins", but not a 4-star either.
