Summary: Bad ! Real Bad!
Review: With dialog llike "Up your poop with an ice creal scoop"
I mean really! I couldnt even get through the whole book.
The constant flashbacks to Vietnam, To compare this in any way to"Die Hard is an insult. This book and its premise is drivel.
However alot of people liked it and if you have 20-30mins to read this crap be my guess. Id rather sit the can.

Summary: Action All The Way
Review: Business executive Dave Ellis shows up to work one morning to be greeted by his boss who is holding a gun and lamenting the fact that Dave must die. Dave can tell that today is not going to be a good day. He has to call on all the training he learnt many years ago in Vietnam as an army lieutenant. His specialty back then was covert operations and was armed with a vast knowledge of dirty tricks and ability to outthink the enemy. This knowledge proves to be of the utmost importance for his survival of this bewildering attack.

Why is he being hunted so determinedly? Why do his pursuers seem to be such professionals?

Throughout the chase he goes through a series of flashbacks as all of his training comes back to him. We find out where he learnt all his dirty tricks and booby traps, how he knows what his pursuers will do next and how to escape the traps that are set for him. The bulk of the action is confined within a 50-storey building as Dave tries to escape and his pursuers try to keep him penned in. With ingenious evasive manoeuvres and devious booby traps, Dave races from floor to floor as the net tightens and the number of chasers grows.

This is an action-all-the-way hell-raiser that is all the more enjoyable for it's unbelievable moments. There are sequences that remind me somewhat of the movie Die Hard, but was also refreshing in it's originality at the same time, funnily enough. A terrific ending capped off a very enjoyable book, containing everything required of a first-rate action adventure.

Summary: Terrific action!
Review: With Vertical Run, Garber has shown himself to be a master of the action thriller novel. The book operates under a simple premise: lone, innocent businessman is suddenly targeted by hoards of unknown, unfaceless assassins who are out to kill him. But beyond this seemlingly ludicrious opening emerges an intricant story that delves into the psychological darkness of the human mind and the mechanics of fear. The reader takes the perspective of the hunted, and so has as much idea as he of the reason for the price on his head. The chase then not only continues through the levels of his office building, but through the murky reccesses of his hidden past. The prose is descriptive, tense, and at times witty as our reluctant hero's inner voice states his cynical opinion. Overall, the novel was a highly satisfying read which I have enjoyed three times as of yet. It is slightly unbelievable, not for its premise, but for the way events pan out through the course of the book, and so misses out on a perfect rating in my judgement.

Summary: A great thriller
Review: This is a very well written thriller: it basically does not let you put it down until you finish. I read it a few years ago, and have been looking for author's new books since: unfortunaltely, I didn't find any.

Summary: Fast Paced and Fun
Review: Hey, a new story. In this category of books, it is getting a tough to find something new but this was. I think I have had a few days like this - at least the part about the boss taking a shot at him. This is a fun book with a new interesting plot. Joe average all of a sudden has the world after him. He then has to run for his life. The book just keeps going and going. I think this will always be this author's best books, I do not know how he will top it. The story is very tight. It had it all, a great story, good characters, wonderful action and a quick pace. This is just a good old exciting book. The author peppers the book with plot twists that keep the reader on his toes. This author writes in a way that is tight and slick that keep you interested through out. Sit back and enjoy this book.

Summary: This book is as fast pace as its name.
Review: This book rocketed away with me clinging desperately to it for one of the greatest rides of my life. (In literature!) Not only was it a fast passed, hard nosed thriller like Tom Clancy or James Huggins' stuff; it was full of whit and punch to rival Mark Twain. Hop on and catch the ride too!

PS: I have to say I really enjoyed the New York accent the reader of this book would put into some of his characters and you may want to listen to this as opposed to reading it.

Summary: Vertical Run
Review: For most people, work is an everyday task. Not for Dave Elliot. On a typical morning in the office, he finds himself in his office with his boss pointing a gun in his face. He finds out everyone is trying to kill him, including his wife, who also turned his kids against him. For a reason unknow to him, FBI agents are hunting him in a New York City skyscraper. His hapless day is beginning to get out of hand. He spends most of the day in a frenzy, running from his hunters and using his mind to set traps and escape. He finally escapes and wants to know more. He heads back to the skyscraper to find out why he is being hunted. That is as far as I have read.

To tell the truth, I'm not much of a reader. I am reading this novel for a writing class. This book pulled me in right away. Ever since I started it i haven't been able to put it down. Joseph Garber's writing is amazing. he compounds words and sentences and just catches your mind. The action and enthusiasm in his writing just captures your attention. I recommend this book for anyone to read.

Summary: Great Fun
Review: A little unrealistic, yes, but a great read. Who said Fiction had to be real anyway? Perhaps the fastest paced book I have ever read. Was great the second and third time I read the book too.

Summary: Skip this one
Review: This book does not live up to its potential. Sure, it had its moments of excitement, but there were little things that kept dragging me out of the book and back to reality.

First, while reading the book I kept thinking, "this reads as if the author is thinking about a possible movie version". You know those "based on the movie" books? This reads like one of those, only there is no movie! A quick search of the Internet turned up a note that the author wrote the book in mind with Harrison ford as the protagonist, David Elliott.

Second, the dialog is horrible. The leader of the group trying to kill Elliott talks in this stilted pseduo-intellectual prose that is ridiculous. You also have your run of the mill comically idiotic bad guys. I guess this point covers two flaws: silly dialog and stereotypical characters.

I know many people have raved about this book so let me offer some advice. If you're going to read this book, read it at the beach or on an airplane. The laundromat would work too. This books is suited for that sort of time killing mindless reading.

Summary: non-stop excitement
Review: As the mysteries that confront the main character are answered, the dangers multiply, with every confrontation seemingly untractable, impossible and unsolvable . Garber balances tension with background all the while the unanswered questions are piling up. Sure it's a formula and in one sense predictable, the exquisite details make the edge of your seat, heart-thumping fun. Joseph, keep writing!
