Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down. One of the best thrillers in years. Review: I thought everything about the book was a 10. The story line, thecharacters, and the style of writing. I normally spend a few days reading a book, but I couldn't put it down. The only trouble I had with the book is that it had to end. I wish it had been 3000 pages long. Usually endings are not as good as the rest of the book, but this one was terrific, and very clever, partiularly the memo at the end. I almost passed over it without reading it. I hope there are more of these to come from Mr. Garber.
Rating: Summary: WHAT A TREAT!! Review: It's not often you come across a book that draws you in like this one did. If you get analytical you'll lose the fun. I don't know how realistic the commado tactics were or whether it was just a bunch of cheap thrills but who cares? It was pure entertainment and while I did not read it in one sitting the anticipation of getting back to it was overwhelming. I consider a book like this to be a gift, like Neville's "The Eight" and I relish every word.
The ending was perfectly set up for a sequel; my question is: where the heck is it? Mr. Garber has had plenty of time and we're waiting!!!!
Rating: Summary: OUTSTANDING! Review: The most original action thriller in years. Complete with a sympathetic hero, repugnant villains, and a plausible plot. I see Ed Harris as Dave in the movie version. Anybody else?
Rating: Summary: WOW Review: I bought this at the grocery store. Never heard of the author or of the book but it seemed intriguing. Well, I was right...about 5 hours later I was so wired and tense I had the shakes!!! Fabulous read. Very taught and (scaringly) believable. Well, after I had calmed down a little and was talking to my father-in-law about it, I discovered that my wife had "cleaned house" and my book was missing!!! So here I am, buying another copy to give to her dad...but I think I'll read it again first!
Rating: Summary: An author should write about something he knows. Review: Mr. Garber appears to have watched a re-run of Die Hard and tried to write a variation. He failed. He knows nothing of a combat veterns thoght process, emotional makeup or civilian adjustments yet attempts them all in a Zane Gray style. The "green beret, badest of the bad" now top corporate executive and favored by all comes head to head against his ex-Nam compatriots, now set on killing him. They convince his boss to try first. Mid 60's, fat and emotional ... who is this succesfull corporate take-over guy? Who then, in a burst of self pity committs suicide. Now a team of around fifty (50?!!!) hardened killers fill a downtown NY office bldg and begin leaving dead bodies everywhere. Of course the family, friends and press all agree that our hero is just a "Nam syndrom freak". No problem.
Rating: Summary: One Hell Of A Page Turner! Review: This book runs with the best of them. I could not put it down, I would recomened this book to any one who likes action novels. If you do not like it you can shoot me!
Rating: Summary: This book almost cost me my marriage. Review: I lost a day of vacation and had one extremely upset wife because I simply could not put this book down. To top it off, I got a sunburn because I was so spellbound by this book I didn't realize my skin was turning pink. Read this book only on a weekend because you won't want to have to call off work on monday. I only wish Rascal Money was still in print. I'm waiting for Amazon to call me and let me know they found a copy. Please hurry.
Rating: Summary: An action classic Review: One of the bestn thrillers I have ever read! I borrowed this from a friend originally, then had to go out and buy my own copy! Fluid writing, fast-paced action sequences and a main charcter you can identify with. Dave Elliot wakes up one day and finds his well-ordered life (job, wife,
e tc.) turned upside down as his boss pulls a gun on him and he's trapped in his office building with people who want to kill him! Don't start this unless youre prepared to finish it! Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: Good read!! Review: I have just put this book down after a marathon reading session. WOW. If you like action type books, get this. If Steven Seagal doesn't get the film rights to this book, there is no justice in the world, the part of Dave Elliot is perfect for him. Get the book, a bloody good read
Rating: Summary: Garber Does it Again ... Review: Seamless execution from light hearted humor (references to management consultants as ju-ju men, pet witch doctors, and even less flattering appelations) to dead-serious dialogue.
"It's easy, Ramsome. Really, really easy. You just smile at the corpses, shrug, and say "sorry about that". And the more you shrug, the easier it gets. You don't call them human, you call them gooks, chinks, riceheads, and they're better off dead. Better dead than red. You stop thinking of yourself as a soldier, which is an honorable profession. Instead, you're a mechanic, which is not." Wow. Incidently -- as a regular buyer of books-on-tape, I would definetely recommend purchasing this one's audio version. Stephen Lange's performance of Ramsome's menacing drawl, Mamba Jack's Texas-hick accent and Daffy Duck (that alone makes the tapes worth buying...) adds explosive color to an already outstanding story. Readers of Rascal Money will recognize a reappearance of Scott Thachter, Nick Lee, and others. Can't wait to see Garber's next novel.
As for the movie ... let's see-
Harrison Ford: Dave Elliot
Robert Di Niro: John Ransome
