Summary: Wonderful mix of tall tale and reality
Review: I was given this book on a "try out" basis before I was to read "A Year Down Yonder". I was definitely not dissappointed in this book. The characters are warm and real. Grandma Dowdle, while built up as a number of tales and rumors, is as real as they come. She uses her inginuity and intelligence to get her through many situations that would otherwise not be possible. I laughed out loud in many parts and I could not put this wonderful book down until I had finished it. This is a great book to read when you can finish it in one sitting!

Summary: Enjoyable
Review: Joey and his sister take their annual, weeklong visit to their grandmother's house in the country, a once dreaded event. Joey narrates their visits over the years through a series of stories involving the adventures of Grandma. Joey sees his first corpse, rides in an airplane, pretends to be a ghost, learns to drive, and experiences many other odd circumstances. I enjoyed the book because it was simple and to the point. Also, being from a small town helped me relate to certain aspects and events in the book.

Review: The book I read was A Long Way From Chicago by Richard Peck. Everysummer Joey and Mary Alice go to Grandma's dead Illinois town. Grandmadoes not always follow the law. Grandma, Joey and Mary Alice gofishing by "borrowing" the sheriff's boat and catching thefish in an illegal trap. This is just one story from the many goodsummers that Joey and Mary Alice spent with Grandma in A Long Way FromChicago.There are three main characters Grandma, Joey and MaryAlice. I think Joey has the biggest change because he goes from beinga boy to a man over the years. Mary Alice learned not to give up onthings you will need when you are older. Grandma did not change butshe taught a most important lesson, the lesson of life and love. Shetaught Joey and Mary Alice through her love of life that the littlethings in life can make a big difference. I can connect to Joeybecause I wonder if what I or other people are doing is right orlegal. This book really got me thinking about my grandmothers and howmuch they do for me... I think this might be inappropriate for someyounger children because there are guns in it and Grandma, Joey andMary Alice see and hear some nasty things.

Review: I really enjoy this book. It's really a good book. I cried at the end.(Hey I'm sensitive) Funny here and there. I only gave it a 4 star because I thought it was missing something. I can't explain it, but it's just missing something.

Summary: Long Way From Chicago- A Laugh Out Loud Yet Heartfelt Story
Review: A Long Way From Chicago is a humorous story that recalls the summers that Joey and his sister Mary Alice spent with their Grandma Dowdel, a wise yet quirky woman with tricks always up her sleeve. From discovering the sheriff and his deputies bootlegging, not to mention dancing drunk in the woods to "raising the dead" (the dead meaning Shotgun Cheatham, an old outlaw), to helping young lovers elope because of their eccentric parents protests, this book bursts with the feel of small town life and the humor of an elderly, sly Grandma Dowdel. I loved this book, and I would highly recommend this book to any and everyone. It's truly great.

Summary: A Long Way from Chicago
Review: A Long Way From Chicago is a collection of short stories from the point of view of a child when he visits his grandmother in chicago. My opinion of this book is that it was sort of slow. It was fairly funny, but not the kind of hysterical funny, or even silly funny (like Roald Dahl's books- I reccommend them!). I found this book hard to get into, and overall a heavyweight to finish. A couple of the short stories were funny, but overall I wouldn't reccomend this to many people.

Review: We loved this book so much. In our opinon it is the best book next to the Harry Potter series. This book will make you laugh out loud wherever you are! It's good for any age!(0-100 if your alive) Calling all readers, if you don't read this book you are missing out on tons and tons of fun! We know you will enjoy this book as much as we did.

Review: A Long Way from Chicago is one of Richard Peck`s novels.It is a story of two children,a brother & sister, who were visiting their Grandma Dowdel in an Illinois town. And that probably was between 1929-1942. At all these years the children have many strange adventures such as having steal property , helping Grandma fault , the dead man in the coffin ,and catching the sheriff in his underwear. This book contains many interesting parts . For example, "The Mouse in the Milk" , "Things with Wings" , and "Shotgun Cheatham`s" which I liked the most . It has a special atmosphere , when I read it first I was confused but then everything become clear.Generally , A Long Way from Chicago is a good book because it is rich with new vocabulary words for whom interested learning English also it is a comedy and has many funny stories . I recommed reading this book for it`s interest and value.

Review: My mom bought me books about families after my dad left. She gave me this book about a family with lots of different people in it. It was funny but the part I didn't like is that the grandma did stuff that I don't think a grandma should do. My mom also bought me On the Homefront by Katrina Cassel that is a book about real families and you can write about your family and about your feelings and stuff.

Summary: Pinturesque and Funny Tales
Review: A Long Way From Chicago is a great novel, not only for his fantastic adventures, but also for its life lessons. Richard Peck created a very good story about a family legend across different generations based on the adventures of two little children that went to visit their grandmother in a small town of Illinois during the Depression period in the United States. The readers that like the pinturesque and funny tales could enjoy the whole novel, but especially two chapters that recreated popular traditions, such as, big parades and the town fairs. I recommend this novel because it is easy to read to native and non-native speakers, and once you begin to read the stories, you can enjoy and realize all the situations that happend to all the characters a long time ago.
