Rating: Summary: A CHALLENGE TO COMPLETE!! Review: Only my commitment to finishing a book when I start it enabled me to complete this fantasy novel passing itself off as suspense. Despite the 300+ page length, I never felt as though I "knew" the characters in the story. And although I find paranormal psychology and the like fascinating, the book was just ridiculous. It was so overwhelmed with this type of detail that the story seemed lost somewhere in the midst of it all. Certainly, the killer was a surprise, but with better character development a reader could better appreciate the shock. Will I read another Kay Hooper novel? Possibly, since I am a fan of the genre. But I won't be reading one anytime soon. DYB
Rating: Summary: Every Bit as Good as Anything Hooper has Written Review: Police Chief Rafe Sullivan knows a serial killer is on the loose when the third blond victim shows up. Some how the killer manages to entice these cuties into the woods without a fight and that's got Sullivan stumped. Too much for a small town police chief to handle alone, so along come the feds in the person of Isabel Adams, a blonde every bit as cute as the killer's victims. Isabel is from the FBI's Special Crimes Unit, a fictional team of psychic agents that have become real to Hooper's readers. Our heroine has the ability to get in the mind of the killer, but she gets too close and sets herself up as his next victim. This five star book is the best of the "Evil" series and every bit as good as any of Hooper's "Shadow" books. I read "Sense of Evil" in one sitting and loved every second of it. Rating: Summary: Use all six senses to enjoy this book! Review: This is ellen in atlanta - Don't know how Kay Hooper has eluded me in the past but I ordered The Sense of Evil and truly enjoyed the book - as a matter of fact, I ordered all her previous Bishop books in paperback to catch up as there were references to past events that seemed to explain things in this book. But that didn't stop me from enjoying this book and wanting more - If you are a believer of ESP or are open to possibilities that there is more than our 'normal' senses give us, then this book is for you, because it blends a good thriller with the psychic world. And Hooper does it well -
Rating: Summary: Schizophrenia and Multiple Personality Disorder are Differnt Review: This is the first time I have read a Hooper novel. I haven't yet finished the book, only half way through. BUT, being a physician, one of my biggest pet peeves is the misconception that Schizophrenia and Multiple Personality Disorder(MPD) are the same. There were many instances in the book when the author was quite confused(almost as confused as the killer). MPD is a very rare disease and much controversy with regards to the diagnosis by many psychiatrists. Nonetheless, the author should have spent just as much time reading up on KNOWN psychiatric disorders as she did on professed "psychic abilities" and reiterating it throughout her book in a dogmatic fashion.
Rating: Summary: What was she thinking? Review: This is the worst Kay Hooper book I have ever read. I have read all of her psychic/serial killer books and they were great. I don't know if she was having a bad time with this one or what, but I could have done a much better job! This book had so much potential for a kick ass book and it fizzled out before it even got started. If this is your first Kay Hooper book, give her another try with "Sense of Evil" or "Out of the Shadow" series. Those were fine writing skills. If you simply must be read it, try and find a used copy and don't waste your $$ on a new copy!
Rating: Summary: Good read Review: This was the first book by Kay Hooper I've read, so I can't compare this one to others by her. Suffice to say that I thought this was a good read. I liked the psychic concept and the storyline but felt the characters weren't developed well enough to decide whether they were likeable or not. Also, there seemed to be more discussion among the characters about why and what than there was action, which made the story lag at times. Killer also wasn't much of a surprise - I think it's been done before. Will I read more by Ms. Hooper? Sure.
Rating: Summary: No, No, Nooooooooo! Review: This was the worst Kay Hooper novel I have ever read. The rest of the evil series was pretty good but Sense of Evil came out of nowhere with no point. The characters are forgettable and the experience of reading it was numbing. And I hate saying that because I love Hooper. But I couldn't stand this story. Believe me, I tried. Skip this one. Believe me you won't know or care what you're missing.
Rating: Summary: Text book material Review: This wasn't a suspense novel, but a text book on psychic abilities. Way too many details on psychics and what they may or may not be able to do. I lost the story trying to wade through the text book material and so many "whodoneit and why" assumptions thrown at the reader. Did Kay Hooper write this book? I don't think so. Bring Kay back!
Rating: Summary: Great, but definitely not her best... Review: While her Shadows trilogy did not need to be read in order to understand (I started with Bishop and Miranda's story, which is still my favorite), her Evil trilogy should be. There are recurring characters that are more fun to revisit if you've read about them before. As for this book, I couldn't put it down. Ms. Hooper has such a way about leaving you hanging to where you MUST continue. Most of her books have a very touching romantic element to the story, which is probably my second favorite aspect of the novels (the first, of course, being that they're all psychically inclined). Sense of Evil, however, was missing that, which was why I gave it 4 stars. I hope Ms. Hooper will return to adding a bit more romance to her characters--it's one of the things that makes them 3-dimensional and so very loveable! But that aside, Isabel and Rafe's story is a great one that should be read and enjoyed! I just hate the fact that I have to wait for the next one!
Rating: Summary: Who wrote this book??? Review: Who in the world wrote this book!!?? It certainly couldn't have been Kay Hooper. She does such a fantastic job on her plots and stories that there is no putting the book down once you get started. This book, however, was a real struggle to get through. I buy too many books to waste money on a hard back that should have been either a paperback or sent to the trash. The characters had no emoton, and as far as I could tell, there was not much of a relationship building between the main characters except the electric spark that happened when they touched. There was a whole lot of psychic babble that could have been left out. If this is your first Kay Hooper book, please don't give up on her. She has many, many other books that are fantastic.
