Rating: Summary: James Patterson Falls on His Face on This One Review: When the Wind Blows is the poorest fiction I've read in a long, long time. One can only wonder what causes a good author like Patterson to write a trite, unbelievable, third rate work like this???
Rating: Summary: Really bad. Really, really bad. Review: Okay, here's an example of 'suspense' in this book: As she enters a house she thinks, "Wait! A trap! But it was too late!" That closes the chapter. Turn the page and the first line of the next chapter is, "No, it was not a trap, after all."I'm not kidding.
Rating: Summary: An unusual thriller Review: This is an unusual, yet still enjoyable, thriller. Once again Patterson breaks away from his Cross series to try his hand at something different (see Black Market, the Midnight Club, Hide And Seek, Cradle and All, the Beach House, Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas). Almost all of these excursions, with the exception of Black Market, have been excellent. This is is not of such high quality, but it is nonetheless still a good read. The plot is good. However, the overall premise of conspiracy and government testing is one which has been used frequently in the genre, and as such Patterson brings nothing new to it. However, as a thriller of government conspiracy this is exciting, and rather compelling. It does leave something to be desired in the character development department, though. Both the lead characters are interesting and likeable, and work well in contrast with one another, but at times they seem a little shallow. Of course, the obligatory spark of romance is there, (something which is present in almost all Patterson books) and it does breathe a certain amount of life into the characters. This, in true Patterson fashion, remains a pageturner. His short chapter and simple writing style (sometimes far too simple) make for easy and quick reading. But sometimes, that quick writing style detracts from the story. It is not in evidence as much in this novel as it is with Violets are Blue or Pop Goes the Weasle, but it is still there. Overall, this is a good thriller, with a very unusual plot, but at times the plot does seem a bit too much within the realms of childhood fantasy. Certainly exciting, certainly intriguing, certainly a Patterson pageturner.
Rating: Summary: Novel idea Review: This is a bit of whimsy but it was fun. It nice to find books based on a new or novel idea. It broke the conventional format of thrillers.
Rating: Summary: Every Time The Wind Blows... Review: You will remember this book. Every time you hear about a news story about bio-medical technology and gene research, you will remember this book. Patterson crafts such an immense amount of science and human emotions in one book...even intertwining the two on the same page, it is guaranteed to reach you whether you are a 'by the book' fact finder or a romantic at heart, a true believer of human love and life. This book takes you on the journey of a lifetime...flying through the trees on the wings of a girl whose DNA has been altered, to the mothering instinct a doctor feels for her. You can't say that you knew where this one was going...Turn the pages as fast as you can.
Rating: Summary: Patterson and Koontz Escape to Witch Mountain... Review: James Patterson tries to write a story that is a complete departure from his successful serial murderer/detective series. Even though it was different, it certainly turned out interesting! I applaud Patterson's ability to break out of the mold! But still, the story has faint resemblance to the writings of other authors and stories of other decades. I got the feeling that Patterson was trying to imitate Dean Koontz writing something akin to Disney's "Escape to Witch Mountain." I kept waiting for a young Kurt Russell and Jody Foster to jump out of the bushes. Angels are on the loose in this remote mountain region. They appear to be pre-adolescent children with silvery wings. They are scared because this great big world through which they are running is very new to them. But learn to fly and learn to trust and the world begins to look a little bit different. In walks the widowed veterinarian whose husband was murdered years before. Her spirit is broken, but not her heart for it opens up to the dashing new man who shows up out of nowhere to rent her backwoods cabin. Together they discover these mutant angels and help to solve a mystery that is far from what it appears to be. The story is layered deep with conspiracy and deceit and takes dear reader on an adventurous ride of avoiding the bad guys and protecting the innocent.
Rating: Summary: The Perfect 'Flight' of Fancy for a Lazy Afternoon Review: So, its not great literature! Its a great story! A feat of a 'soaring' imagination! I couldn't stop reading it. Set in Colorado near Boulder, the story moves a lightning fast pace which is hurried along by abbreviated chapters told either from animal doctor Frannie O'Neill's, first person point-of-view or from a third person-point-of-view which highlights the mindset of the other major characters. And is the premise really all that unbelievable? How many baby-boomers out there would do just about anything to reverse the aging process---why not a little gene-splicing to quicken evolution just a tad bit and tip the scales in favor of the human race? All in all whether or not the idea is plausible, it still works as a story--I mean we all loved Peter Pan didn't we? If you have a free afternoon, a bright blue sky, sunscreen and a comfortable lawn chair, check out this book and have a great few hours!
Rating: Summary: What was that? Review: I have never been so baffled by an author's serious lack in judgment. This book has driven me to sit a write this review. Did anyone else who read this book feel that our intelligence was beeing challenged? I feel weird because here I sit at my computer writing a review, which I have never done before, yet feel so completely compelled to do. I finished this book simply because I couldn't believe how stupid the storyline was. I kept turning the pages thinking it was going to get better, then as if in trance of mind sucking power, I realized I had finished it with no better reason for having picked it up off the shelf. I mean what dialogue was that? Just about the worst I have ever read. If you are going to sell an idea as far fetched as that, then at least give the characters some brains and beleivible dialogue. I have read James Patterson in the past, and was entertained and naturally disapointed in the movies that follow some of his books for the lack of MY imagination that they portrayed. I don't even think hollywood could fill the theaters with this one. I will now try to get back the moments of life I lost reading this book.
Rating: Summary: Garbage! Review: I just have one question to ask: How does such abominable garbage ever, ever get printed. If this was the first book that Mr. Patterson pitched to a publisher they would laugh him out of the building. This is a book I would use to teach my four year old son how to read. The sentences were absurd being three or four words long. I even quoted some of the lines to my mom and dad and we had quite the laugh. I don't know what his other books are like but this one was horrendous.
Rating: Summary: When the Wind Blows Review: When the Wind Blows is a gripping tale of a heroic veterinarian who makes an amazing discovery in the woods near her mountain home. This discovery comes in the form of a scared little girl with a spectacular gift. Suspense builds as the girl and the veterinarian struggle to trust each other and escape the grips of cold-blooded killers. The two of them along with a charismatic FBI agent attempt to discover the origin of the little girl's extroadinary gift, which leads them into further peril. The pages fly by, and it is nearly impossible to put this book down until its finished.
