Rating: Summary: Book Review of Number the Stars by Louise Lowry Review: I thought that Number the Stars was a wonderful and intriging book. The book allows the reader to see what a young girl thought and felt about what was going on during the Nazi's invasion of Denmark. The author uses language that allows the reader to feel what a young girl may have been feeling at this time. I was very impressed with the way that the author uses the theme of pride. Pride is represented in a number of different ways. The author illustrates that everyone has pride. She illustrates that the Jewish people have pride, the King has pride, and all the people of Denmark have pride. The story also illustrates bravery. Bravery is shown by so many people in this story. The author shows the reader that all of the people in Denmark needed to brave. It also ilustrates that sometimes people do not have the choice to be brave, it is the way of life. This book also illustrate friendship. The author creates a special bond that is shared between two young girls. Friendship is shown on two levels. The book illustrates the friendship between the two girls and the friendship between the parents. It illustrates that sometime people are willing to risk thier lives for thier friends. It illustrates the position that people were put in. It shows the will of the people, people will risk their lives for the saftey of others. People are willing to endure many hardship in order to save other people and do the right thing. The book also illustrates that age made no difference during this time. Peter and Lise were young and died while fighting for the freedom of others. Annamarie's parents were also brave. The young girls also had to endure and survive the terrible treatment. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend this book to everyone.

Rating: Summary: A touching book Review: Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is a wonderful book. It takes place in Denmark, Germany. It is during the time of the Haulocast, when Hitler ruled. The main characters are best friends, Annemarie Johansen, and Ellen Rosen. Ellen is Jewish, and the officers find out, and they want to take her away. Annemarie being a loyal friend, takes Ellen into her home and hides her. The story is very touching, and has major historical significance. It goes through life during the Haulocast, through a child's eyes. When I read it, I had a better understanding of what happened then, and what life was like being a Jew, being sent to concentration camps, or witnessing what had happened. If you are interested in history of the Haulocast, and to see different point of views, read Number the Stars!

Rating: Summary: Excellent story of friendship and bravery Review: This book was about a young girl named Annemarie Johansen who lived in Germany during the time when the Nazi's were in power. Ellen Rosen was a Jewish friend of Annemarie's and when the time came for her family to flee Denmark for fear that the Nazi's would drag them out of their homes and to concentration camps. Ellen stayed with Annemarie and her family so her parents to go on and find a safe place to live. The idea behind this plan was that if the Nazi's questioned the Johansen's about Ellen then could reply that she was their daughter Lise, who had actually died years earlier. With the help of Peter, Lise's boyfriend, who was in the Resistance the Rosen's and other Denmark Jews safely made their way to Sweden. The Johansen's risk a great deal trying to save their friends and the others. When an essential package containing a handkerchief sprayed with a mixture designed to temporarily damage Nazi search dogs' sense of smell is accidentally dropped during the escape to the fishing boat. This would allow the Jews to hide safely under the fishing boat deck and not have the dogs sniff them out. Annemarie takes the dangerous job of delivering it to the boat before her friend and family are discovered and killed by the Nazi's. I loved this book. I thought that it was a great story of a young girl and her bravery, friendship and determination in a time of horror. Lewis Lowery did an excellent job creating this scenario. These two main characters were perfectly realistic. It was nice also because rather than reading a terribly sad ending this one was realistically happy. The happiness at the end when the small boat of Jews arrived safely in Sweden and how Annemarie looked forward to being able to see her friend again when Nazi's power diminished.

Rating: Summary: A Book Worthy of its Recognition Review: Lois Lowry's "Number the Stars" is a well-written tale of courage and ingenuity overcoming adversity during a dark period in the world's history. She has populated her story with believable characters in a realistic setting with obstacles to overcome that were prevalent in most of Europe during the Occupation.Although the work is one of fiction, the characters are representations of people that actually braved Nazi terror. Annemarie represents all children that are devoted to family and friends. Kirsti, the younger sister, has an innocence and feistiness that is common to small children. Peter, as well as the deceased older sister Lise, is symbolic of the courage of youth. The parents, Mama and Papa Johansen, are the models of reason and practicality. Even the Germans are a combination of the "good" and the "bad." Lowry has researched the subject carefully and thoroughly. In the book's afterward, she reveals that facts are behind much of the story's events. She mentions how the Danish people were actually devoted to their king, how the Danish fleet was burned in the harbor to prevent use by the marauding Germans, and how the dog-repellant "handkerchief" was a weapon of the Resistance. I found myself immersed in the lives of these characters and their emotions. Several elements of tension highlight the story: the initial confrontation with the Nazi soldiers; the nighttime raid of the Johansen home; the train ride to Uncle Henrik's as the soldiers question all riders; the search of Henrik's home during the "funeral;" and Annemarie's trek to her uncle's to deliver the package. By having Annemarie face danger, the author is able to show the young reader that anyone can be a hero whenever the situation calls for brave acts. This theme makes this a worthy piece of children's literature. The author's prose is direct, interesting, and involving. The reader can feel for the characters as he/she reads their interactions with each other as well as their thoughts. Once can visualize the cramped Copenhagen apartment, the vastness of the countryside, and the picturesque beauty of the shore. Because of the historical significance of the book, it is highly recommended.
