Rating: Summary: A Great Civil War Novel Review: The Killer Angels does a great job of explaining the Battle of Gettysburg in great detail, but still manages to keep you interested the whole way through. It gives you a feel of what it would have been like to fight in the war. Unlike some other historical books, the Killer Angels is very interesting, and is easy to learn from. The book starts out when both the Rebel and Union forces are almost to Gettysburg, and tells what happened in amazing detail through some of the key people in the war. I was amazed at how Michael Sharaa was able to tell all of the details of the battle, while still keeping the book interesting, and easy to read. He can almost take you into the battle, and let you feel what the people were feeling, and what they were going through. This is one of the best historical novels that I have read, because it was easy to follow and understand, and it taught me a lot about the Battle of Gettysburg.
Rating: Summary: Thrilling History Review: The Killer Angels is a thrilling take on historical novels. It was the first I've read that turned events into a 'story' and enthralled me. Normally, historical novels are just straight facts, but this book took the journals and quotes of famous generals and showed actual conversation in a real time feel. It is the story of the Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg in particular.Something I particularly liked about it was how it showed the points of view of the Union and Confederate forces. This made me personally realize that what the Confederacy fought for was not wrong, for it was what they truly believed in. Although I am glad the Union won the Battle of Gettysburg, I can not help but feel sorry for the massacre of Confederate troops at the battle. The story is truly enthralling and educational and is the best historical novel I have read thus far. I recommend this book to everyone prepared for an amazing war novel that truly shows the emotions and puts you in the heads of soldiers from both standpoints and beliefs on what the outcome of the Civil War should have been.
Rating: Summary: Mikes review of "The Killer Angeles Review: To me The Killer Angels was a pretty enjoyable book. In the beginning the it was enjoyable and I like the way they expressed everyone. They go into great detail about why the war was being fought. The Union are certain that the war is about the slavery issue, while the confederates think it is about there individual right to own slaves. In the battle the confederates come to Gettysburg with there highly respected commander General Lee. The north are not led by anyone that is highly respected by Lee. But I feel that general chamberlain was a very important general throughout the novel. During the first day of the battle the union got surrounded by the confederate forces. Then general Chamberlain came with him army from Maine. One the second day of this battle Chamberlain and his troops were positioned in a key point for the Union victory. If the confederates broke through Chamberlains line the Union probably would have lost the battle. Nevertheless, chamberlain held his position and the Union defeated the confederates. This victory was very important in the outcome of the war a whole. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed detailed exiting war novels.
Rating: Summary: Best Civil War Novel Ever Review: The Killer Angels, writen by Michael Shaara, is by far the best Civil War novel that I have ever read. I don't know much about the Civil War, but this book helped me understand it much better. The way that Shaara described each day of the Battle of Getysburg in so much detail was amazing. He went into so much detail but it kind of seemed like there was a little to much character development. There is not a lot of action until the very end of the book. But the way that he lead up to the major battles left me in so much suspense. I really enjoyed how Shaara made each General a chapter in his book. I also liked how he explained each army's war strategy. It helped me understand what the armies were doing and e=why they were doing it.The story is about the deadliest battle in American history (the Battle of Gettysburg). The three long and bloody days are told through the eyes of the generals and the brave soilders who sacraficed themselves for what they believed in. This book made me enjoy the Civil War much more than I used to. I now have a stronger understanding for what they were fighting for.
Rating: Summary: big tdawgs sweetness book review Review: I thought that The Killer Angels was fairly interesting. Although this type of book isn't usually my genre, I decided to try it. When I started reading this book I had the picture in my mind that everyone associated with the Confederate Army were horrible people who just wanted to treat slaves like animals. After I read this book I respected the confederate army. I understood that the Confederate army was just fighting for the only way of life they knew. I think that this book is beautifully written, but it isn't really something that I am interested in very much. Although it isn't the kind of book that I would read again I highly recommend this book to anybody who likes reading about the Civil War or who likes the historical fiction genre. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone that likes an intense, fast paced book, because this book goes at a fairly slow pace. I award this book three stars because it was greatly written but it got boring after a while.
Rating: Summary: Vivacious storytelling, full of suspense and action. Review: A silent night. Men huddled around a fire, cold, hungry, and tired. Days of marching behind them, and days of marching ahead. Muskets at their sides, canteens half-empty, they lie awake in the midst of the midnight's eerie loneliness. A horse's gallop can be heard in the distance, then before the men know it, the General is up from his bed calling them to attention. Another day has begun; another battle has too... Michael Sharra brings the complete excitement and emotions of the Civil War to the reader in his exquisite novel, The Killer Angels. With his unique style of sharp wit and talented usage of words to explain the situations and emotions of the characters, Sharra keeps you turning the pages with relentless action and intensifying story. The Killer Angels begins with the Generals of both sides, the Confederacy and the Union, expressing their thoughts on the war and analyzing their numbers as an army. Finally, the two mass armies crash in Gettysburg, and this is where Sharra crosses the boundary from being a mere author, to being a majestic storyteller. Through many battles and smaller encounters, the story unravels itself into what we find as one of the greatest Civil War novels ever written.
Rating: Summary: A Digestable Gettysburg Account Review: This book was absolutely fantastic. I do not know as much about the Civil War as I would like, but even so, this story about the Battle of Gettysburg was written in a way that made it easy to understand. The numerous tales that are told are each gripping in their own ways. Michael Shaara brings them all together in a way that is elegant- but knowing what end the soldiers are approaching, the author also provides the momentum of the tragedy of Gettysburg. In addition to great style, the story is very even-handed in its protrayal of the soldiers. Often, war stories are told from the point-of-view of one side. The Killer Angels is very balanced in its political portraits and creates a sympathy for nearly all of the soldiers not often found in war novels.
Rating: Summary: The Killer Angels, By: Jenna Villatoro Review: I will tell you now that The Killer Angels is in now way an easy read. But, once you get into it, the pages turn faster and faster. Shaara's writing style is very descriptive and unique. His style is definitely what I liked most about the book and made it fun for me to read. I am not the kind of person who can sit down for 3 hours and read but The Killer Angels was, surprisingly, easy to get back into. The descriptive tales of war brought to life the scenes and took me back in time. Shaara's novel took me about 1 month to read and it was difficult but now I know why so many people said it is so good. I definitely recommend this book even if you are not into history because I am certainly not.
Rating: Summary: THE KILLER ANGELS IS HEAVENLY AWESOME!! Review: The Killer Angels is a fantastic book that will take you back to the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. Michael Shaara takes direct quotes from every key army officer and facts, and recreates the whole Battle in front of your eyes as if you were fighting the battle yourself. The book revolves around these three eventful days, (July 1- July 3). Shaara elaborates on the quotes said and cold hard facts, and makes them into a great story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Every chapter revolves around a certain army officer and makes you see everything that person was saying and doing. It also takes you on both sides, Union and Confederate, and sets the mood, position the side is in, and what they are planning to do next. The Killer Angels is about two armies fighting for a certain cause, one for another man's freedom and another for a way of life. The Killer Angels unfolds a critical period of history where chaos and hell breakout between a divided country. The story revolves around the three most crucial days of a country's fate happening all at the Battle of Gettysburg. Here in this Pennsylvanian town, is where these two extremely different armies clash for a cause that will benefit their home country and make them shine like heroes once they ride back home to their missed families. It is here where Confederate troops led by General Robert E. Lee and James Longstreet try to victor over the vast Union army led by General Meade. The Battle of Gettysburg is the climax and turning point of the most crucial point of American history and Shaara recreates this epic battle to life. The plot of the book definitely kept me in suspense in what was going to happen next. It also was an exciting book to read because I love to read war novels and the description of the wars and conversations of army officers like between General Lee and his trusty side General Longstreet were so real. Shaara brings army officers such as Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, and Joshua Chamberlain to life and brings out their personalities. Before I read this book, I knew almost nothing about the Battle of Gettysburg and the key army officers and thanks to an eventful read I know a lot more than I would learn from a textbook. This book was definitely a page-turner and kept my interest throughout the whole book. I would recommend this book to all that are debating to read it or not. It was one of my favorite books of all time.
Rating: Summary: Mike the Sike Reviews Review: Killer Angels is one of the best Civil War novels I've ever read. This book gives a strong sense about what the war is about for both sides. The south makes it clear that it has nothing to do with slavery. They insist it has to do with freedom from a nation who treats them unfairly. The north however also insists that the war, overall, is truly about slavery. This book give the readers great insight about the positions of both the Union and the Confederate armies which gives you great information about what both sides were thinking. This book by Michael Shaara gets into the minds of the generals and the high ranking officers and goes into specific detail about how the felt and what they thought the war was about. The Battle of Gettysburg .For the Confederates, General Lee leads the charge in the Battle of Gettysburg. He is respected greatly by both his foes and by his enemy. For the north, there is no one respected by General Lee, but Colonel Chamberlain is the key for the Union victory. With the Union surrounded, Chamberlain's men made their way down from Maine. When the second day started and Chamberlain's men were positioned, they had a key role in keeping the flank. If the Confederates deafeated the flank, they would get through. That would have ended the battle and probably the Civil War itself. But, Colonel Chamberlain held his ground and this helped the Union take a great step in the war and later contributed to the north's victory. This book is compacted with thrilling action and specific details.
