Summary: One of the best novels I've ever read
Review: I picked up "The Killer Angels" for lack of anything else to read and was treated to one of the best novels I have ever read. Not only did Shaara's work introduce me to an entirely new genre, educating me on the realities of war and the details of the American Civil War specifically, but it also reduced me to tears. His human illustration of the men of both armies is so real that you experience their torment, suffering and glory along with them.

Summary: Clearly one of the best books I've ever read!
Review: With some knowledge of military history, I read this with trepidation. As an African-American in the US Air Force, and living in an area where many battles were fought, I was unsure of the content (anything about the Civil War), but elected to read it. I was not disappointed, in fact the battle was brought into focus of what the war was about for the North...to set other men free. This was more than just about a battle, this was about individual men and ideas, how each believed their cause was just and that God was behind them. I was in awe. Especially of Joshua Chamberlain. This is a must read...but do read "God and Generals" first to bring it into perspective before Gettysburg and what each major character truly believed.

Summary: THe Greatest Civil War book Ive read
Review: This book was so great it inspired me to read Jeff Shaara's novel Gods and Generals. The Killer Angels just kept me in the Civil War time area. The best part was of Picketts charge.

Summary: Good, but his son's Gods and Generals is better
Review: Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels is a good historical novel centered around the
Battle of Gettysburg, but you get more for you money from Jeff Shaara's Gods
and Generals.

Summary: Symply Awesome
Review: I have always been interested in the Civil War and history. This book brings the the battle to life. It prevents the reader from becoming bored by bringing together a historic facts of the battle, with dialogue between characters.

Summary: Best historical work I've ever read
Review: Simply Awesome. I never had an interest in battlefield literature, but read this after receiving strong recommendations. What a shame the author died prematurely; I can only imagine what he could have done to other famous historical events. To the guy who unfavorably compared Shaara's writing style to that of F. Lee Fitzgerald, I say "get a life". It's called 'style', buckwheat. You probably didn't care for Hemingway, either. I'll acknowledge that Shaara's style is unique and somewhat terse, but thank heavens not everyone writes like Fitzgerald. How boring literature would then become. And to the 9th grader who didn't understand what all the fuss was about, it's time to log out and get back to work. I'm sure the owner of that McDonalds doesn't like his employees using his computer.

Summary: A Must Read
Review: As a real Civil War buff, I have to say this is the best novel on the War Between the States I have ever read. Even though the book is a fiction novel, the historical value of the book is unbeatable. Shaara uses true historical knowledge and his skill of writing to make you feel like you are right their with the 20th Maine as the troops from Alabama charge up Little Round Top. Shaara has written a novel that is great for buffs and the reader who is just getting into the Civil War era.

Summary: Obviously A Favorite of Civil War Buffs
Review: As you can see by the previously published reviews, this book strikes home with those who are interested in this period of history. If you aren't moved by this book (even if you have little interest in the civil war), you have a heart of stone. It really did happen this way. And it will tear your heart out. Well done.

Summary: The best fictional history I've ever read
Review: I love reading about history whether its novelized or non-fiction. But this book was very different from all the other novels I've read. Shaara tries to encompass the whole Civil War in those 3 days. Its amazing how Shaara includes not only the battle but the whole philosophy of the entire War. I think that's the part that really moved me. He seems to depict the main characters so thoroughly that the reader seems to know each one of them as real humans not just historical characters in history books. I have never read a novelize history book with so much fiction along with history. I think 'The Killer Angels' was one of the best novels I've ever read.

Summary: I used to hate history...
Review: ...until I read this book. I didn't want to finish it, it was so intriguing. And then when I found out about "Gods and Generals," I was able to complete the book knowing that there was more excitement ahead. In addition, I have a much better understanding of wars since and how we in the U.S. choose to fight them.
