Summary: Not much to add, a well deserved 5 stars (and Pulitzer too!)
Review: This biography is one of the most thorough and enjoyable I have read. If there has been controversy over Morris' Reagan bio, at least it brought attention to this book. Morris drew a portrait of Roosevelt and his era and it came to life for me. I particularly enjoyed the description of the political scene of the time, especially the New York State assembly and further on to Boss Platt, Senator Hanna, and the other backroom operatives. Morris does not hide the negative side of TR, the snobbery, the hypocrisy, and the naked jingoism. As a Canadian, Roosevelt took Manifest Destiny to extremes and one sympathized with those who considered him a loose cannon. At the same time, this book shows his drive, energy, and his willingness to put himself face-first into anything, be it the Spanish American War, the unpopular anti-saloon enforcement in NYC, or any of his western adventures. I highly recommend this biography to anyone interested in history, Americana, or the times of the later 19th century.

Summary: Bully
Review: Morris has made me a huge (albeit 100 yrs late) follower of the quintessential American, Teddy Roosevelt. I recommend this book to everyone I can find, and have heard nothing but rave reviews.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: One of the best books I've ever read
Review: Don't be put off by the controversy over Morris' Reagan biography. This biography of Roosevelt was deservedly named one of the best 100 nonfiction books of the century. Full of insight and detail and beautifully written, I couldn't put it down. I just wish he'd finish the next book in the series; I've been waiting almost 20 years.

Summary: Ask Good Questions, With Good Documentation & Earn Praise!
Review: What a terrific book by a gifted writer whose book speaks volumes about him. The book was exceptional, in documentation of the endnotes, in making you want to read it without stopping and leaving you with more knowledge than when you opened it. Edmund Morris deserves all the praise, prizes and promotion by pundits of his work. I highly recommend it. Superb excellence simply superb excellence.

Summary: One of the five greatest Presidential biographies.
Review: This book has long been one of my favorites. It is richly detailed, superbly written, and warmly empathetic. At the same time, Morris is not afraid to criticize "Teddy". Perhaps the most amazing thing about Morrises book is that a man born and raised in Kenya, and without historical training., can produce a book that understands America so well, and which shows such a mastery of historical method. Icannot wait for the promised second and third volumes of the trilogy. Rereading it has convinced me that his bography of President Reagan will be better than most people think. (For the record, my own nominees for the other four best biographies of American presidents are McCullogh'sTruman, Malones Jefferson, Freemans Washington, and the Randall/Current biography of Lincoln. Sandburgs Lincoln is more folk-tale(superb folk-tale) than history.)

Summary: All the praise lavished on this book is deserved.
Review: To those wondering where's the sequel? the news is that the second volume (of what is intended to be 3 vols.) is half done, but has been set aside for the last ten years for his forthcoming semi-official biography of Ronald Reagan. Then back to Teddy! May I live long enough to see it all through and sitting handsomely on my bookshelf. And long life to Mr. Morris too.

Summary: One of the best biographies I've ever read.
Review: One of the best biographies I've ever read. I could not put it down. I hope he writes the sequel!!!!

Summary: Good book on an interesting man
Review: "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" is a good book that covers history, the west, and the psychology of a great man. A bit wordy at times, the book is hard to put down. It is very detailed and the footnotes are exceptionally well documented. A must read for any Roosevelt fan. Hurah for erin-go-bragh and the Yankee nation! A Dee-lightful read.

Summary: Such a unique experience
Review: People like to scoff at the idea that a historian can understand a person or time, but when you read Morris's book, you're convinced he's got it right. And why? Just take a look at the endnotes. He has everything down to the weather report from the day TR arrived in Albany as a state representative. When a historian has that much information, and has buried himself so much in the subject, he can share a captivating story.

Read!

Summary: One of the Best Books I have ever read
Review: Morris has written a tour de focrce. He does a great subject justice and tells the story of an original and in many ways "ideal" American character in a thoroughly engrossing manner. It is refreshing to be reminded that a president with a moral code, bedrock values and an unshakable belief in American exceptionalism can truly lead our nation. This one I will re-read.
