Summary: A very good read with an unexpected bonus,
Review: understanding of one of the funniest inside jokes in television history: the trinity of Larry and his brother Darrell and his other brother Darrell.

Summary: Life is more than the pursuit of property and position
Review: Despite the focus on Larry Durrel, this novel is about many different characters, including Maugham himself. I found his characters very realistic and very human, each with good and bad traits. Although Maugham claims to have not understood Larry's very important tale in chapter 6, he presents these views very well. This chapter is where Larry tells of his journey to India. Maugham tells us it is not important to the actual story line of the novel, but it is the most important part of the whole book. Do not skip it. Actually, I think Maugham was using a bit of reverse psychology there. This is a magnificent novel about people enveloped in society and one who flies above it. As many have said before, an ispiration.

Summary: profoundly serene
Review: A dreamy-eyed cat finds something in nothing. He finds what many of us are in search of. Along the way he shows his fortitude and clarity of mind. Somewhere along the way we see that we are the dreamy-eyed cats and he is the manifestation of what we strive for.

Summary: splendid read to enlighten all ages
Review: This is my favorate book ever. Although I am a teenager I still can relate to the idealism and realism in this book. If you buy this book for yourself you should buy a copy for your children also. The Razor's Edge is a book suitable for all ages and it improves people in a way most entertainment cannot anymore.

Summary: Makes me giddy
Review: This is one of my all time favorite books. I've read it about ten times. Maugham is fantastic and the story keeps you enthralled. After reading the book I just want to go sit up on a hill for awhile. Upanishads here I come.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The most influential book I've ever read
Review: THE RAZOR'S EDGE originally had the sub-title "The Story of a Man Who Found a Faith," and I think anyone willing to take the time to read this masterpiece will do the same. Larry Darrell embarks on a philosophical journey, but Maugham does not turn his novel into an INTO TO PHILOSOPHY text (like SOPHIE'S WORLD). Instead, Maugham portrays the goodness of one man as juxtaposed by the worldliness of the others. It is fascinating reading by an eloquent, stylish writer.

If you are a relatively new reader, THE RAZOR'S EDGE will change your life. If you are an avid reader who is acquanted with Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Shakespeare, O'Neill, etc, Maugham will certainly fit in neatly with your library.

Summary: A Writer's Writer
Review: For technique alone, there are few writers on the same level of W. Somerset Maugham. He may be the best writer of dialogue of the last one hundred years.

"The Razor's Edge" is timeless. It could have taken place during the Vietnam War or the Napoleonic Wars. All of Maugham's books have the underlying theme that you must go through your ration of pain and lonliness in life and if you hang in there you will come out okay in the end. Although I actually like "Cakes and Ale" slightly better than this book, this one clearly had the bigger impact and better expressed these recurring themes particularily in the relationship between Larry and Sophie.

Summary: I beg you to read this book.
Review: I found out about this book after being shown the movie with Bill Murray. The friend who introduced me to it told me it changed his life; I now see why. If you are a person in search of some meaning to life, one only has to pick up this well-written novel and journey alongside Larry. This book has made it onto my list of favorites; ones I know I'll read once a year. I think you will find this to be true for you as well. No one is too young or too old to find meaning in the story of a few tormented friends in the 20's and 30's. Please read this book.
