Summary: A look at the ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances
Review: For once a work about how the rest of the army feel about having to go to war. No generals, no chiefs of staff, just dogfaces.

This book is, to my mind, a must for any NCO or officer who would like to have an idea of how the mind of the PFC works, and what motivates.

Also, the book is a very candid look at ordinary people at war. More than once, I was choked up by what I read, as I can't imagine how I myself would react in a similar situation. All I know is that every single one of those all too young men were incredibly brave. Especially the ones who were scared witless, but were able to function anyway.

I found this book particularly evocative for two reasons:

1. My paternal grandfather landed on King Beach with the Royal Engineers, and my maternal grandfather was a German conscript in Denmark. This helps me understand how they felt.

2. I'm a 2nd Lt. in the Royal Danish National Guard, and can't imagine myself at war without being scared s***less. At least I know I won't be the only one....

Summary: Unbelieveable. Buy it. Read it. Soon.
Review: Never having been in the military, much less ever having seen any combat, I was quite surprised to see how miserable life in the field can be, even for the winning side. Excuse the cliche, but only once in a while do I come across a book that I 'couldn't put down' This was one of them.

Summary: Outstanding!!!
Review: I have read many books on WWII, and other books by Mr. Ambrose, but this is the most riveting book that I have ever read about the men of WWII. This is a must read for anyone that is intrested on the history, of the men and the battles. You will not be able to book this book down. This book make you feel that you were landing on the beaches on D-Day, felt the cold from the foxholes at bastogne and in the minds of the "citizen soldiers" as the war came to the end. As Saving Private Ryan was to the movies, Citizen Soldier is to the literary world!!

Summary: one of the best WWII books i have ever read
Review: Ambrose brings the war alive to those of us were not around in the forties; i have read quite a few books on WWII, and this is one of the most realistic and honest ones; i plan on reading his other books as well

Summary: Gives insight to the common GI's struggle in WWII
Review: In Citizen Soldiers, Ambrose is able to collect the stories of hundreds of GI's and put them together to give the reader an insight into the life of the normal American soldier. These narratives are combined with the traditional overview given to the generals and politics of the war to give this book appeal to all readers of WWII.

Summary: Ambrose Does it Again!
Review: This book was everything I hoped it would be! A very worthy successor to D-Day. Ambrose has done what I would never have believed possible: he has single-handedly redirected my efforts (and interest) from a lifetime of Civil War study towards the Second World War!

If I have any complaint about this book, it would be the somewhat superficial treatment of Army Air Corps operations. A minor complaint, however!

Sleep well, amazon.com. The revenue stream from my end can now only increase!

Summary: The must-read book to understand World War II
Review: Steven Ambrose has surpassed himself with this one. This is the most informative, moving and fascinating book I've ever read about World War II and the WW2/Depression generation(and I've read extensively on this subject). As a baby-boom child of a WW2 veteran, this has opened my eyes to what they went through. It's head and shoulders above it's competition

Summary: One of the definitive books of World War II
Review: Mr. Ambrose captures the heart of the "Citizen Soldier" (the Reservist) in this history of WWII from Normandy to Berlin. He shows the men as human and as brave and dedicated to their mission. In doing so, he also shows the folly of the Brass in believing that they can run a war from the rear echelon.

Summary: Soldiers' view of the war in Europe is unique.
Review: This book should be read by anyone, historian or not, who wants to better understand World War 2 from ground level. Not unlike "Saving Private Ryan", the focus here is not on large scale strategy and tactics, but on the basic American citizen fighting a war they believed in. Most of the book is in the soldiers' own words, and can be troubling in its calm but graphic descriptions of the pain of men fighting, and watching others die. A hard book to put down.

Summary: Outstanding
Review: In depth coverage of the war we all watched TV movies about or learned about (briefly) in school. This is the real magilla!
