Summary: No such thing as too young for this book!
Review: My mother-in-law gave a new copy of this to my husband for Father's Day. It was his favorite book as a child, and she still has his copy (but couldn't bear to part with it!). He started reading it to our 18 month old. Now almost 20 months, our son calls it the "gum book" and asks us to read it about a dozen times a day. He knows each of the Viorst boys by name, and will correct us if we skip a page. He loves this book! He laughs at all the right times, and says "ohhh" at the right times. He defintely has an idea of what's going on, even at less than 2 years old! Read this book to any child, regardless of age!

Summary: Committed to memory
Review: Having performed this as a speech in a competition I have this one in my head. Of course that was over 10 years ago and i still know it so this must be a good book. I am now reading it to my children.
Poor Alexander. Any child can relate to his terrible horrible no good very bad day. I still have those days and that is exactly what i call them! Judith Viorst captures the mind of a young child well and i would recommend this book to anyone looking to cheer up someone who is having one of those days.

Summary: A book that speaks to children's moods as having validity
Review: I read this book to my son some 25 years ago and his half brother before him. I loved that it gave validity to a child's moods. As adults, we can find ourselves in a bad mood, so why can't a child. It reminds adults and children that, to a child, their thoughts, concerns and feelings are every bit as real as our own. The problems they face, to them, are very serious, just as an adults are. It gives the child permission to be who he or she is. If they learn this, they can come to us openly when they're angry or upset, and we have an opportunity to teach them to problem solve or just listen to them vent. The book was great, as I would expect from Judith Viorst, who has a wonderful and comprehensive view of life and the world in general! I highly recommend it as a book to share with your child. Start that dialogue early. You won't regret it.

Summary: a terrible day book
Review: i discovered this book when i was in grade skool and i remember running home and telling my mom all abt it, how it was just like what i used to go through. it's abt this little boy named alexander who has the worst day of his life (or so he thinks.) he wakes up with gum in his hair, goes to skool with no dessert in his lunch, finds a cavity at the dentist's office, wants the sneakers with the red stripes but his brother got them first so he has to have the plain white ones, has lima beans for supper, and is forced to go to sleep in train pajamas. it's such a cute book simply becuz you know kids go through it everyday. if ever yr child is having a bad day, read them alexander and see if they don't improve attitudes just a little.

Summary: Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day
Review: I have been using this book for several years with groups of children. Mostly when I just needed to fill some time, I would read this story to them. They have always loved it - even the ones who thought they were too old to have a story read to them. By the time I am halfway through it they are already repeating the familiar phrase with me and supporting early literacy skills. The humor is enjoyed by all and the illustrations of Alexander and his brothers are just wonderful.

Everybody has had those days where nothing seems to go right. The misfortunes of Alexander on such a day where he wakes up with gum in his hair - and that was the high point - will keep anyone smiling. A nice little lesson is that the book does neatly wrap up with Mom coming in to save the day. Rather, Mom comes in and tells Alexander that "some days are like that, even in Australia."

Why 5 stars?:
This book has gotten me out of jams before when I needed to fill time. Kids and adults love watching Alexander and the rough day that he has because we can all relate to it. The kids are able to see themselves in Alexander. The repeating phrase is one that they can all join in on. The realistic ending of the book just adds to its magic.

Summary: Alexander needs a time out
Review: I bought this for my daughters (7 and 4 years old) because it was so highly rated. They hate the book and would not allow it on their shelf. I ended up adding it to the pile of toys we sent out as a charitable donation. My children view Alexander as a bad little boy. They cannot identify with him, or have sympathy for him. Our family is rather calm, and Alexanders' behavior would seem out of place at our house. I suppose that if I had a difficult child, this book could spin the bad attitude and bad behavior into a sort of humor. But, I would not want to live in denial making light of it, calling it a bad day, or passing phase. My children prefer books such as "Frog and Toad are Friends", and the Magic Tree House series.

Summary: Who Wouldn't Love This Book?
Review: Alexander's day starts out terribly, and never improves. In a story that children and adults can relate to, Judith Viorst offers a universal experience told with humor and affection. My four year old can recite this book from memory - the whole thing. I love the 1970's appearance of the kids, reminding me of my childhood. And I appreciate the naturally, not-preachy interracial/multi-cultural characters. A winner!

Summary: An all time classic
Review: I know how Alexander feels, being stuck in the middle sucks! I keep this book in my night stand and I read it occasionally. I loved it as a kid and will probably keep loving it as I grow older

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Make it a good day
Review: by reading this book. My daugher cracked up at the illustartions and the bad luck Alexander was having. An easy read that children enjoy.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: True life
Review: This book shows how bad days can make you feel, it makes you feel like moving to Australia. We've all had those days where bad events just keep coming one after another, and i think this book does a good jop showing this. As Alexander finds out later, the have bad days even in Australia
