Rating: Summary: Connelly's an Excellent Writer -- Starting to be Formulaic. Review: _Angels Flight_ is yet another great book from Michael Connelly. I think the thing I liked best is how his police detective hero, Harry Bosch, continues to grow and change from book to book. This was the first time I actually started to like him and could see how others might feel the same way.Unfortunately, after reading the last three or four of Mr. Connelly's books, I'm starting to see a bit of a pattern emerge in the way he sets up a false climax each time, only to follow with one more. It worked in _Blood Work_. It worked in _Trunk Music_. It failed dismally in _The Poet_. Here, it's not so much a problem as a writing quirk that needs to be addressed, to keep the writing fresh. That said, let me reiterate the fact that I highly recommend this book--in fact, all of Mr. Connelly's books. He continues to be one of the few writers whose books move me to get ahold of them any way I can, as quickly as I can.
Rating: Summary: A gripping tale with deep characters, but a rushed ending Review: Connelly has moved to the top of my favorite writers list; however the sudden ending of "Angels Flight" keeps it from joining "Trunk Music" and "The Poet" as classics. I couldn't put it down, but I wanted more when I closed the cover.
Rating: Summary: Not as good as before, but still quite fasinating Review: This one seems to lose some steam and high standard as the old ones, especially the last round-up; a twist too hastily done, let the Internal Affairs guy kill by mobs while Bosch's skin was miraculously saved. Also, when read this one, Harry has become a kinda guy mellowed too much, and has become quite estranged. Not a lone wolf with strong inner conflict anymore, but a married guy with a compulsive gambling wife. This kind of transformation is the worst kind of writing a NOVEL, i.e., you just let a hero created in a good novel series become too human and would grow too old too soon, and finally would have to let him die. If Harry Bosch's inner conflict finally turned into certain marital problem, then this series would be diluted into a tasteless family stuff. Don't do this, Mr. Connelly, keep the hero on the right track, and you, please don't lose focus again.
Rating: Summary: Best Connelly ever Review: Michael Connelly continues to turn out one fantastic read after another. Having read all his works to date, Angels Flight is, by far, his best yet. I have never read an author that can hold the readers interest as well as Connelly can. It seems that he writes his books to you, not at you. I'm very fortunate to have found this outstanding writer and story teller. Give us another remarkable story soon, Michael.
Rating: Summary: Uneven Review: Just finished the book this morning. I will buy every book he puts out because of the first of his I read - "The Poet". I have come away from it as though I have just left a group of familiar friends - glad to have been with them again. I found the book not as fast-paced as I would have liked until the last 50-75 pages. It seems to me the author did not "take the time" as he did with "The Poet" and even "Trunk Music". Enjoyable read but not exceptional.
Rating: Summary: What a great read!! Review: Mr Connelly had done it again. I could hardly put it down. I've read every one of his books, and he doesn't disappoint. I recommend his Harry Bosch series to anyone looking for great police procedurals. I can hardly wait for the next Bosch story. Whatever he puts out next is mine to own, because he always entertains. Keep up the wonderful writing Mr Connelly. You are definitely one of my favorites.
Rating: Summary: A sharp, revealing look at a sick society! A real Winner!! Review: Once more we encounter the embittered detective Harry Bosch being given the impossible case to solve. As in previous stories, the author writes plausible plots and believable narrative in a flowing prose style. The outcome will surprise many readers, and yet at the same time will be chillingly familiar to readers of previous Bosch novels. Is Bosch really the winner? Does the LAPD come out of this looking bright and shiny? Or is it, once more, a triumph for the political sleaze-balls operating in the background? Make up your own mind! I read this book in one (long) sitting, and found it entirely gripping and oh-so-believable. From the perspective of an English reader, the political milieu in which Bosch operates seems almost impossible - but then we don't have huge numbers of guns running around our streets, either in criminal or legal hands. Connelly manages the seemingly impossible of merging hugely entertaining thriller with a sharp, precise and deeply insightful look at the sociological and political institutions of the city in which he lives. Another winner!
Rating: Summary: Great story; weak ending. Review: Micheal, you did it again! You rushed the ending of "Bloodwork" and then did likewise with "Angels Flight." You made me feel as if you were tired of writing and thought, "Hey, just lemme find a way to finish this thing." Don't get me wrong -- I enjoyed the novel immensely, as I have all of your others. On another note, isn't it about time you followed up on the whereabouts of special agent Robert Backus (from "The Poet")? I keep checking the L.A. storm drains, expecting him to emerge at any time. Don't leave us fans wondering, Michael.
Rating: Summary: a complex story with a simple ending, its a keeper. Review: What can I tell you this is simply the book to read and to buy. Don't wait for the paperback.Mr. Connelly is not afraid to rip the bandage off and expose whats really happening in the police force. This is not abook you won't want to miss.I'm not breaking your shoes on this one folk's.
Rating: Summary: Truly outstanding. Harry Bosch is as good as ever! Review: Michael Connelly gets better and better. Characters never get stale.....holds your attention and has a well strung plot. I have enjoyed each and every one of Connelly's novels.
