Rating: Summary: Why would you want to strip the glorious English language Review: down to its bare essentials? ON WRITING WELL preaches a lean, clipped writing style that essentially neuters any sense of lyricism or music in language. It's like saying we should all live in Minsk, all buildings should be gray, there should be no leaves on trees, and you go to prison for using an adverb. As Andrei Codrescu once said after his visit to a monastic Shaker home: "No smoke, no drink, no sex, No Thanks! "
Rating: Summary: Anyone who writes in English should read this classic guide. Review: Unlike other guides I have read, this book is easy to understand and apply. Other guides impose strict planning and other techniques on the writer. Using numerous examples, Zinsser illustrates the pitfalls common in writing and provides guidelines to clear and precise writing. Practicing what he preaches, the entire book is simple, clear and precise. I would recommend this book to anyone who writes - for school, work or leisure.
Rating: Summary: A must read of Zinsser. Review: Every writer should have this book at his or her fingertips. Read it, refer to it often, and recommend it to others. Zinsser is inspiring, motivating, and clever.
Rating: Summary: The most important book in my library!! Review: I'm now purchasing my fifth copy of this book. It has been so valuable to me, but I loan it to friends and they beg to keep it. Not a problem, I'll just buy the latest edition for myself! This book is full of practical advice for the writer of any kind of nonfiction, from letters to humor. It has numerous examples of good writing (GREAT writing) and has introduced me to many wonderful writers of subjects that I would not normally read. This is an excellent book! It is a great gift for the college-bound. Buy two, you'll want to keep one from yourself.
Rating: Summary: Excellent definitive guide to writing! Review: This is an excellent writing guide to the English language. Zinsser's book covers every area of writing necessary to all beginning writers, as well as more experienced ones. It also includes a section on writing in different styles for different purposes, including non-fiction, sports, humor, etc. A must read!
Rating: Summary: Good simple writing style for a self-puff piece Review: He does teach you to write well, I suppose, and he does have a really noticable style. But how many times do I have to hear how great he was at interviewing, writing, or something else? My prognosis: Well written, but I became a bit bored with this piece of puffery.
Rating: Summary: great, with great clarity Review: I love good writing. I was pleasantly surprised to find this book. It deserves to be read by everyone. Actually, I rate this book six stars.
Rating: Summary: Tremendously Helpful...and Fascinating! Review: This book surprised me. I had heard that it's a "must read" book for any of us who write. And it is. The surprising part is how enjoyable this book is to read. After having read it a few months ago, I picked it up today and read a chapter. Zinsser practices what he preaches: he makes the subject of writing a most entertaining one!
Rating: Summary: As a fellow non-fiction writer, I couldn't recommend it more Review: I write for a living. Before I listened to the audiotape of this book, I wrote and wrote and wrote -- and seldom got it right. Working news writers, feature writers and commentary writers (I write and am published in all three categories) will feel a shcok of recognition the minute they read or hear Zinsser. He's a gem. PS: I just ordered the newest edition.
Rating: Summary: Superb! A must for anyone who writes! Review: If you do any form of writing, you must listen to this tape. The book is also excellent, but the tape is even better. Succinct, fresh, inspiring. I have written four books, and every time I write a new one I listen to this marvellous tape again. Get it! Your readers will be glad you did.
