Rating: Summary: A Book to Make You Laugh, Think and Change Your Life Review: This book was not what I expected.I expected to enjoy the humor of Glenn Beck and also read some political opinion, but what amazed me was his detail description of what he has gone through in trying to clean up his life and find a religion he could relate to, and one that would answer his questions. I have been struggling for the past year and a half over the loss of my brother. I have never really been very religious but my brother was. I have tried dealing with his death by reading religious books (thought it would help me relate to the brother I loss) I read The Five People you Meet in Heaven, which I enjoyed but it did not address my feelings and the Joshua series which I also enjoyed but again it did not help me with my feelings of guilt and resentment, and that longing to have a second chance. So imagine how surprised I was when a book I picked up for entertainment purposes only made me turn around and see the destructive path I have set out on. Everything I have been going through and more Glenn has faced. (loss of a loved one, alcohol abuse, and even admitting at times he wished that good people would fail. The part of the book where Glenn gets into his own weakness and having to deal with the problems his family faced (his Mothers suicide is without a doubt was one of the most difficult problems)and how he tried as I have to drown his pain with alcohol and how he eventually found a religion that helped him deal with life. I stopped when I got to certain parts of the book and really thought how my own actions were similar to Glenn's self destructive behavior. Glenn has gotten through this all now, but I was just going down that path. I think I would have kept going too if not for reading this book because I am not an alcoholic but I was definitely trying hard to become one. The inspirational stories submitted by others to his book made me cry. I sometimes have forgotten that others have been through tougher times than me. He also has inspired me to be more generous. Other parts of his book just plain made me laugh. But there are parts if you aren't a regular listener to Glenn's show will shock you. He even caught me off guard at times but I reminded myself that he loves to mess with his listeners and so one can figure he would do that in his book. The chapter "Everything You Need to know about Partisan Politics" is classic Glenn Beck. People may criticize Beck for his political leanings but he lets no one slide and calls all out when they take sides based only on party politics instead of issues. I highly recommend this book, and if you aren't into politics I would say to at least read the "Enlightened Way to Wealth" Page 189 and Chapter 10 , this is the area of the book that has helped me make necessary changes in my life. This is the area of the book where Glenn goes into details on being generous with others (giving 10% of your earnings away) and about his bout with alcoholism. All in all there is something for everyone in this book, and its an easy but interesting book to read.
Rating: Summary: Not much there in this "heartland" Review: Take this for what it is worth from a pretty conservative reviewer: There is not much "really" here: Beck admires the economic engine and value to life of the small family business (like his dad's bakery and the people of his hometown) but appears to love mammoth Wal-Mart even more. He describes himself as "staunchly" pro-life but he couches choice in the limited terms of "if you choose to have sex, you can't then choose to have an abortion." Abortion seems to be fine with him for cases of rape, incest and the mother's health. This might be his idea of being enlightened but it is not "staunchly" pro-life or anti-abortion. He uses this approach to build his case for "personal responsibility". Choosing sex partners carefully may be a form of personal responsiblity but it is not pro-life. He shops for a new religion to please his next wife-to-be, leaving any seriously religious person a bit slack-jawed at the process he employs to please his intended (sort of "Hey kids, let's go find a religion!"). His story of his descent into alcoholism and modest recovery to be a "star" (although I admit to never having heard his name prior to reading this book) is mildly inspiring but not very informative, humorous, or revealing. After the first twenty pages of cliches, swipes at the typical conservative targets -- Hollywood, politicians, the media, Barbra Streisand, Michael Moore -- and a stream of consciousness that amounts to nothing more than platitudinal punditry, you have to wonder what "heartland" Beck is writing about. He's smarmy and nostalgic but not well spoken. Save your money. For a better if unintentioned perspective on the heartland, read Bernie Goldberg's "Arrogance".
Rating: Summary: Radio Loudmouth Review: It's usually the case that the loudest voice belongs to the dumbest person. Glenn Beck's radio program is testament to that. His book however, gave me a chance to see what this guy was trying to say without being turned off by his loud mouth. Unfortunately, his words were just as obnoxious, idiotic, and loud in print as it is on the radio. If you want to be severely irritated, I reccomened this book.
Rating: Summary: negative stars Review: I give this book negative stars for it's sheer stupidity.
Rating: Summary: Zero Stars Review: This book is the exploitation of stupid people. The fake emotionalism and the appeals to pseudo patriotism. This is an attempt by Glenn beck to cash in on the war by claiming that war equals patroitism. What a quack.
Rating: Summary: blah, blah, blah Review: Well the double chins were out on TV last night. I usually tune out of TV but stayed on Hannity and Colmes to see you. What a disappointment. What a whimp! Really, you were like the deer in the headlights. When Alan talked to you, you jerked like a puppet on a string. The most significant thing you said was "blah, blah, blah." I'm sure you were kicking yourself in the behind for such an assinine presentation. You're book got a semi-plug. Glenn Beck sucked up big time to Saun Hannity just to get on his show. Anyways, Glenn Beck came off badly, just like his radio show which I have tuned out a long time ago. Even his website is lame, posting false news stories just to hype his book. Still out of the top 100 at Amazon and not even being taken seriously by the major media outlets. Bacon fat flash in the pan looks like, smells like, burns fast and leaves a lot of grease smoke. Just his style (or lack of).
Rating: Summary: NARCISSISTIC Review: Glenn Beck is so filled with hubris that it borders on narcissism. He are intellectually devoid of anything worthwhile. However, that is not what is most the most pathetic about it. It is his constant misleading of the sheep of America who, like lemmings buy this so called book he have. I feel anyone who purchases this book, filled with his idiotic thoughts, must have potatoes in their skulls for brains.
Rating: Summary: Cheap emotionalism Review: The book is terrible and I'm going to tell you why.. The pathos, the bathos, the hyper-emotionalism, and above all the tears and pregnant pauses are more than I can endure. Many of us live with a variety of afflictions in our families-cancer, MS, cardiac problems- and we do it without emotionally bleeding all over the people around us. If the real America is a place of sacharine sweetness, sustained by chicken soup and cloying Reader's Digest sentiment, I guess I prefer my tougher, more cynical but more realistic world. But then, you have perceived that there is a big market for schlock and cheap emotionalism and program to that need.
Rating: Summary: Horible book! Review: I cannot come up with enough adjectives to negatively describe this book. It stinks to high heaven.
Rating: Summary: "Conservatives" take themselves way too seriously Review: What is interesting is that books like this on the left are entertaining. Franken gets mileage out of being interesting and amusing as he throws his barbs. Books on the right take themselves way too seriously, this book being an example.
