Rating: Summary: An outstanding book from an upstanding man. Review: Glenn Beck is a premier example of a thoughtful and compassionate conservative who cares deeply for the glorious country that brought him up and can not only admit it but also can defend it with the fervor that it deserves. Beck's Real America is the America that far too many people have been raised to believe is hackneyed - the love of mom, apple pie and the stars and stripes waving in the breeze over a summer baseball game. If you love your country you'll love this book. WARNING: Since Glenn Beck's radio program and book have the ability to convert liberals into conservatives - a traumatic psychological metamorphosis that I've literally seen with my own eyes - I recommend that liberals listen and read in short doses of perhaps ten minutes no more than three times a week. If you find yourself agreeing with Glenn, discontinue listening and reading immediately and reread your Michael Moore collection. On the other hand, if you want to feel a genuine love for your country and learn to stop hating yourself, increase the dosage slowly over time. Buy this book. Bobo
Rating: Summary: Glenn Beck is the man!!!! Review: If you like Glenn's show, you'll love his book. He gives badly needed perspective on issues we all need to deal with. I started hating Glenn almost two years ago and that gradually grew into respect and I've been hooked ever since!!!!! Buy this book and save Bobo!!!!!
Rating: Summary: More tripe from a rightwing loudmouth Review: Basically the way to be in Glenn Beck's real america is to be a staunch Republican and to believe every word that comes out of his mouth. Before getting into this, I'd like to point out that Glenn once said on his show that liberal books don't sell and that he'd 'put any of their numbers up against Ann Coulter's" He then went on to chuckle and sarcastically say "oh, you everyone bought that Michael Moore book" Truth Check-Moore was in fact the #1 non-fiction book of the year and easily outsold Coulter and now, over a year since its release, its massively outselling Beck's NEW book. As are All Franken, Molly Ivins, Joe Conason, Jim Hightower and plenty others. - Just wanted to point that out. This book is standard Beck with his self-righteous, holier-than-thou smugness. On the bright side at least this way you can get his message without having to hear him resort to shrill screaming every other line (i'm surprised the book wasn't written in all caps). Or pointless and pretentious pseudo-dramatic pauses. If you've heard the show or had to endure a visit to your town from one of his pro-war rallies masquerading as a 'support the troops benefit', you know what to expect. It's a collection of unfunny attempts at humor that might work with a bad morning dj combined with narrow-mindedness and egotism. It's the rantings of a man who wants to portray himslef as a 'man of the people' (see, he's wearing a denim shirt on the cover-that must mean he's a populist!) going off about millionaire hollywood celebrities. Never mind that Beck is a wealthy celebrity himself. He just has the arrogance to believe that his opinions are more valid than the others. I'll be honest I didn't finish the book. It was so cringe-inducing I only made it halfway through. Glenn Beck can keep his version of america. I prefer to live in the real america of patriots like Frederick Douglas, Martin Luther King, Sojourner Truth, Mother Jones and others who fought to improve this country. Unlike Beck, who thinks patriotism is blindly sucking up to power.
Rating: Summary: A true American speaking his mind Review: Mr. Beck is one of the few people who speak it how it is, no spin. He's not a bleeding heart nor does he wrap himself in the flag for the camera. I see Mr. Beck as a spokesman for the American people who want to live their lives and raise their children without having their lives polluted by violence and perversions. Read him & listen to him. His views are based in common sense and a natural desire to make everyone a neighbor, no matter where they live, how much they make, or what they look like. P.S. Mr. Beck please don't kill BoBo the dog...I bought the book!
Rating: Summary: READ THIS BOOK!!!.... PLEASE SAVE BOBO!!! Review: Glenn Beck is a master of prose. His words are like butter. You can almost envision the butter dripping from his pen as he wrote. Literally. No, I'm not kidding. He was probably scarfing butter covered popcorn at the time or maybe a pancake with a stick of butter in the middle. Seriously, the book is fantastic. Or at least I'm sure it will be. (I haven't read the book yet - I'm just trying to save BoBo.) If this book is half as insightful and funny as his program, you'll love it. If you haven't heard his program, then start listening. I don't agree with everything the man says, but I've got to admit, I do agree with a lot of it. BUY THE BOOK!! SAVE BOBO!!
Rating: Summary: Never mind Clubbing the Dogs Review: After you buy this book, either to keep dust from accumulating on your table, or to save the life of Bobo the dog, let's storm the castle. For every number that this book rises on the "Top 10" list, let's insist that Stu whack Glenn with a baseball bat. The book: edgy, outspoken, mostly right, and as irritating as you can stand.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't Stop Reading Review: Wow!!! I had to read it non-stop. Over and over - had to take several medications to keep from sleeping before the ecstacy was over. After rehab, I'm going to read it again!!!
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down Review: I have been listening to the Glenn Beck Program for two years now, so rest assured, I'm only writing this because I've been brainwashed by a vast right-wing conspiracy. Glenn lays out his argument in simple terms, so that it's clear for everybody. The Real America blends his expert use of sarcasm, sincerity, sacriliege, and the sacred to deliver a powerful statement of the American condition. If you haven't read the book, you are probably thinking "great... another right-wing blowhard wrote another liberal bashing book"... and you'd be wrong. Glenn's book talks about the people that make this country great... you and I. He talks about founding principles that may not yet have been reached and how the people are given the freedom to reach those ends, if only we stand up and choose to accomplish our goals.... he shows howthe change begins at home, and cuts through the bunk of partisan politics in a brilliant chapter on the topic. Don't buy this book if you want another conservative rambling on "liberal bad, conservative good"... BUY THIS BOOK to discover the potential you have to change.
Rating: Summary: Life as a 1950's TV sitcom. Review: I had to give this piece of garbage one star because that is the lowest rating Amazon will let you give. For the record, if I could give this book zero stars I would. Glenn Beck is the host of a right-wing talk radio show and that's what he's best known for. Beck has also been a featured speaker at the pro-war "rallies for America". What's interesting is that he's had a national radio show for about 2 years. And he still can't get radio stations in major markets (LA, Chicago, NYC) to carry his show. Beck's show is heard primarily in smaller cities and towns. Other right-wing hosts (Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity, et al) manage to get their shows on in major markets. Why not Beck? While I disagree with Limbaugh and the others, I have to give credit where it's due. They have talent and that's why radio stations in major markets carry their shows. Beck is a Rush Limbaugh wannabe without the talent. Radio stations in major markets know this too. That's why none of them carry Beck's show. This book is a joke, starting with the cover. Beck (an admitted alcoholic and cocaine addict turned religious nut) is standing in a field wearing a work shirt. Behind him is a barn with an American flag painted on the roof. You can't help but chuckle at the absurdity. This may have been the real America back in the 1700's to early 1800's when we were still a pre-industrial agrarian nation, but certainly not now. So what is Beck's vision of the "real" America? It's not the early 1800's as the cover suggests. Think of innocent 1950's TV shows like Ozzie and Harriet, Leave it to Beaver, etc... Beck sees an America where everything looks like this: A perfect dad, a perfect (stay-at-home) mom, perfect kids, living in a perfect house with a perfect lawn and a perfect white picket fence. The house is in a perfect neighborhood and all of the neighbors are perfect. Oh and don't forget to put up the perfect American flag. Each morning the perfect kids head off to their perfect school. Dad heads off to his perfect job. Mom spends the day cleaning the perfect house and cooking the perfect dinner. Later in the day everyone returns home. "How was your day?" "Wonderful" "How was yours?" "Swell". And so ends another perfect day with the perfect family in their perfect home. Urgh! Yuck! Beck seems to want all Americans to live this kind of life. Beck talks about all of his topics (which include family, politics, responsibility and religion) from the perspective of someone who thinks he is a character in a 1950's sitcom. You come away with the impression that Beck wants all Americans to be transported to "Pleasantville". In the movie "Pleasantville", two teenagers from the 1990's are transported into a black and white 1950's TV sitcom. However, when they introduce modern values and behavior to the other innocent sitcom characters, people and things begin to appear in color instead of black and white. The difference with Beck's book is that he wants everyone in America transported to "Pleasantville" and he wants it to remain unchanged. Sweet. Innocent. Wonderful. Swell. In other words Beck has a hard time dealing with America (and the rest of the world) as it really is. Beck's publishers are already starting to worry that this book is going to flop. The reason? No one knows who he is because his show isn't on in any of the major radio markets. It seems to me that his publishers should have thought of this sooner. Other right-wing radio hosts have had successful books. They were able to sell their books by talking about them on their radio shows. This works when your show is on in a major market and people know who you are. Beck doesn't have this advantage. Instead Beck is hoping that all of the hillbillies, hicks and hayseeds in the small towns will buy his book. There's also a good possibility that not many people will buy the book because of Beck's aforementioned lack of talent. Frankly, the book is poorly written. Do yourself a favor. Avoid this book like the plague. Even if you normally like books by right-wing radio hosts, this one isn't worth your time. Glenn Beck has now shown that he is at best a mediocre talent as a broadcaster and as an author.
Rating: Summary: BAH!! Review: Since a bunch of you want to write reviews of this book without actually reading it, I decided to follow suit... This book is terrible. It looks to be written by a third grader. In fact, most of it is just blank pages with page numbers. The "author" simply can't write and he should be sued for selling this as a book when it's nothing but a bunch of random scribblings in crayon. There... Now, is there anyone that is not a fan of this guy that can write an HONEST review without getting all googly eyed and kissing his feet as if he were Christ reborn? Sheesh!
