Rating: Summary: Blackbird Review: I couldn't put this book down. It reminded me of Liar's Club by Mary Karr. Written from the child's point of view, it was mezmerizing. Just knowing that the story is true made it even more compelling. While reading it, I just kept wondering how this poor girl could be on her own in so many situations with no adult to help her. She obviously became very self sufficient. It really made me think about how important it is for people to have wills for their children, even when the parents are young.
Rating: Summary: reality bites Review: Grow up in a dysfuctional family in the 60's? Join a kindered soul here. This memoir is so real it hurts. Lauck brilliantly reveals her more than difficult childhood candidly and with humor. I couldn't put this book down. It is a sad story; however, in the end Lauck is obviously triumphant. Lauck is a true survivor of life and after reading this novel, you will be proud of her. Reminded me of the feeling I had when I finished ANGELA'S ASHES.
Rating: Summary: And then what happened? Review: I picked this book up because my teenage daughter was reading it (a recommendation from her HS English teacher). I could not put it down. But discussing it the following day with my daughter, who also read it in one sitting, I had to focus on the reality that Jennifer Lauck is not "one in a million". There are hundreds of thousands of these children, then, now, and always. It makes me realize that I (you/me/all of us) need to be diligently aware of what goes on around us and do our own small part to rescue these children before it is too late, (whether this means being a kinder more gentler GS leader to those kids we don't really like; an even more sensitive and loving step-mother, *or step-daughter* or an even more observant neighbor). Much as she was rescued by relation, many children are not. We all likely know someone who is silently suffering. Have we buried our heads as ostriches? As other readers, I too was fraught with anxiety at the end and would love to know "the rest of the story". Jennifer: don't keep us waiting!
Rating: Summary: Sad, moving......absolutely beautiful! Review: Jennifer Lauck has captured her childhood, as incredibly painful as it seemingly was, and offered it to us without the usual adult cynicism and self-pity so often found in memoirs. What is truly remarkable about the story she tells is her ability to tell it from her 5-,6-,7-,8-,9- and 10-year old self. She made it impossible not to put myself back into my own childhood and feel the emotions and fears of a little girl......only making it that much more horrifying to learn what she went through. Her relationship with her mother was achingly bittersweet. I found many of her experiences unthinkable, and through it all, I wanted to know this little girl, wanted to comfort her, and most of all love her! What a stunning accomplishment for Jennifer.....she deserves all the happiness she was robbed of years ago!
Rating: Summary: blackbird Review: This memoir touched me in a deep, profound way. It is written with such clarity that I felt the core of my being affected. It is one of the best books I've read.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful, heart-wrenching story Review: This is such a beautifully written story. Although it is tragic, Jennifer Lauck really captures the memories of her childhood. A warning to readers-this is an incredibly sad story that is told through the eyes of the child living it. Young Jennifer never realizes what is happening and because of that, this book can and will cause you to cry.
Rating: Summary: Just goes to show what some people are made of! Review: I found myself marveling over the things Jennifer had to go through in the few years this book covers!! I really liked the book and read it in less than 24 hours. I, too, wish the ending had been a little less abrupt. I find myself wondering what could have happened next. We were treated to so much detail in all the rest of the story, that it was quite disconcerting to be left so high and dry just when we need to be sure everything turned out for her! I hope there is a sequel because I ended up caring very much for that little girl that was Jennifer, and need to know what her life was like in the next stage.
Rating: Summary: A lot of Girl in a Little Body Review: I just finished Blackbird, and I must say it was one of the best books I have read in a long time. I was getting extremely tired of reading about superficial, un-sympathetic characters who left you the moment you closed the book. Jenny, the main character, takes you down a long winding road of childhood happiness and disturbing dielemas. Blackbird was discriptive to the point that you felt like you were in Jenny's body living her life. I highy recommend this book, and look forward to the sequel.
Rating: Summary: Blackbird: A Childhood Lost and Found Review: This was truly a sad story about a young girl and the terrible life that she was subjected to. Though I found the story interesting, I was disappointed with the abrubt ending to the story. I am not sure if the author is planning on a sequel, but the end could have been much better.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful book. Review: I thought this book was Awesome! Wow I just couldn't put this book down it was so good and so well written! I am looking forward to her next book to come out!
