Rating: Summary: It has helped 6 million readers, but it is not for everyone. Review: Two things strike me to comment on, this year. I'll begin with occupation and years now. 30 refers to the fact that for the past 30 years I've been writing an annual edition of this book, to help people find meaningful work using unusual job-hunting approaches. 25 refers to the fact that this book has been on best-seller lists continuously for the past 25 years; it is the #1 all-time best-selling book on job-hunting in the world. And 6,000,000 refers to how many people have bought the book - - most of whom, from our surveys, have found it useful, sometimes terribly useful ("it's changed my life," is a typical comment). But it's not a book for everyone; was never intended to be. At 235 pages in the body of the book, it's not a light-read. Those who aren't willing to really sit down and read it, moreover to do some hard thinking about what they want out of life, before they go out pounding the pavements, shouldn't buy it. Also, those who bought last year's edition don't really need to buy this one (unless you're trying to keep a complete set, which - - amazingly - - some readers do). Otherwise, not that many changes from last year (the preface explains why). And finally, those who don't like any mention of God or faith in a job-hunting book, shouldn't buy this book. There are (only) 5 pages in the body of the book plus an appendix at the back of the book, that mention faith - - not much, considering I am a minister. But, as the comments posted here over the past year have proved, even this is too much for some people. They would be much better helped if they browse amazon for other job-hunting books more to their liking. I am grateful for every person meaningful work that they love to do.
Rating: Summary: Got my dream job in no time! Review: After finishing college, I took a whole month to plan my future. I read all the Parachute and follow most of the exercises. Within a month, I had landed my dream job in the world's largest profesional services corporation as management consultant.I had no prior experience in the field, but the book advise was so accurate that I was elected between 30 other candidates with more experience and a better resume than mine. I am now happy with my new career and thanks to all the sound advise of the book. His International point of view is specially helpful for other cultures and his Spiritual approach is a plus... something most books do not even dare cover. I definetely recommend this book to anyone who wishes to get the best of his/her skills.
Rating: Summary: All fluff and no meat Review: After all the hype about this book, I found it to be an extreme disappointment. Very religious, and points people to try things most people cannot do. It's a book that impresses many, but I would think, in the long run helps very few.
Rating: Summary: Alot of pages, little content. Review: Parachute had a lot of "fluff" and rambleing in it. Also the exercies in the book all did the same thing and seemed rather pointless. Several situations seemed unrealistic and some of his suggestions for the interviews may make the interviewer somewhat rude. It applys that everyone in the working feild is going to help you out as much as they can even though they never meet you before.
Rating: Summary: Not for the faint of heart Review: "Parachute" is the most encouraging, inspiring career book around. I reread it every year or two to remind myself that it's ok to expect and keep searching for meaningful work in my life. I also use it to kick me into gear every now and then, to reassess where I am in my career and help me decide what I want to happen next. It's not an easy read, but it's well worth the work. Buy it only if you're willing to take a deep look at what drives you in life, and ready to act on what you learn about yourself. Quick and easy answers aren't what this book is about---thank goodness!
Rating: Summary: Wish I had read this in college! Review: Definitely like the whole person approach to the job search--the religion some people are complaining about was mainly with respect to the idea that people have a purpose and mission in life so they owe it to themselves to do some searching to discover what it is they should do and then work towards that goal. The emphasis is more on the how-to of how to approach the job hunt, which goes way beyond the perfect resume, and gives excellent suggestions that I wish I had had when starting the after-college job hunt.
Rating: Summary: It didn't give me a clue as to which direction I should go! Review: I read the book. I came out of reading it even more confused. It was too religious. The book also contained "facts" that were untrue. I would give it two thumbs down!
Rating: Summary: One of the most significant books I have ever read. Review: Parachute remains one of the most significant books I have read. I know of no other book of its equal which integrates ones spiritual values (not religious dogma) with a serious quest for meaningful life and work. Living in the community of the Columbine High School tragedy, the worth and importance of Parachute looms large for everyone, young and old alike.
Rating: Summary: I saved $3,600. by reading this book! Review: I nearly lost $3,600. to Bernard Haldane Associates for their dubious services, but, by carefully reading this entire book first, including Appendix B, I learned that Bernard Haldane Associates is NOT affiliated with the man, & that you probably will not get your money's worth from Bernard Haldane Associates. However, you definitely will get your money's worth from this book! This 26th edition (1999) is comprehensive and leaner than the hefty 1998 edition. If you're having trouble getting a job or interviews, or choosing a career counselor, you need this book!
Rating: Summary: Following Bolle's Advice Gives Courage! Review: Bolle's advice is timeless and wonderful. The people I know who have completed the self-discovery "flower" (prioritizing personal preferences) have all found their dream jobs. His spirituality is apparent and welcome...as a catholic buddhist, I have no problem with acknowledging the unknown...Buy it and BE HAPPY!!!!!
