Summary: Not a Rip-Off
Review: I have spoken Thai for 37 years. I learned to speak it
in Thailand in 1967 while stationed there with the U.S.
Air Force.

I was stationed in Central Thailand near the town of
Nakhon Ratchasima.

In that part of Thailand, there is a large ethnic Chinese
population. I find that I speak Thai with a Chinese
accent. This book gives me the phrases as spoken in
Bangkok.

The first time I was in Bangkok, people laughed at my
accent. Now I can hear the words spoken as they truely
should be.

This is not a textbook for learning basic Thai, although
some basic phrases are included. It is instead a add-on
to the book "Thai For Lovers."

I personally like the speed at which the words are spoken,
and the content of the material.

I recomend the tapes as a learning aid to using the books.

Summary: Great book........ but
Review: I must say, as a teacher, that some of these negative reviewers seem to have not read the book they are reviewing! Maybe they had indulged too heavily on the previous night, more's the pity.

I have been to Thailand just a few times, but my contacts with the graceful people there made me realize that I really needed to look into "Thai For Lovers," so I could find such (obvious) sentences as "I would like to kiss you. Would that be OK?"

This book changed my life! Just by showing me how to say a few simple things! I sincerely regret that some unregenerate Puritans have interpreted the word "love" to refer to their own game, which is apparently called "dead-head bar-girl sensuality."

Viva Benjawan!!

Summary: A poorly conceived effort for a good idea.
Review: I purchased both the book and the cassettes. The book contains many phrases which, as a frequent traveler to Thailand, I find myself wanting to use. However the audio cassettes, which is merely a page by page reading of the book, is an extreme disappointment. What with its five tones the Thai language is extremely difficult for the westerner to grasp - and merely pronouncing each phrase once in rapid fire Thai is not helpful to one who is trying to learn the subtleties of this rich foreign tongue. There are no pauses in the tape for the listener to repeat the phrases - there are no repetitions of the phrases - as in the Pimsler method of learning languages - so one is merely left with a soundtrack to the book - which will leave the neophyte Thai speaker no closer to mastering the language.

Summary: A very cool book for this lad from Singapore...
Review: I recently saved up the money for a train trip to Thailand from Singapore, and I have to tell you that my journey was made much, much richer by the fact that I had spent some time studying this excellent book.

I already knew some Thai, and I was already studying the language, but I wanted the specific vocabulary for whispering sweet nothings into your loved one's ear, and this book filled the bill very well. I don't know of any book which competes with it.

Hot stuff!

Summary: Wretched
Review: I totally agree with the previous reviewer who says that this is phrase book and tape set that is an insult to Thai people. Thailand is a country rich in culture and beauty, and its people are warm and hospitable. Yes, the country has prostitution, but this book is only of use to people so desperate and sick that they have to travel halfway around the world to find paid for companionship.

Summary: Finally Real Spoken Thai!
Review: I've been waiting for a book like this for a long time. I've been to Thailand twice now and have spent a lot of money and time trying to learn this strange language. I have a Thai wife but she won't teach me so I keep buying books and tapes but they all have something that makes it hard to learn. The only drawback to this book is it ends. This is real spoken Thai that you really use instead of only polite speech about things you'll never need to say. I hope this type of book catches on in other languages. But as for Thai it comes in handy for other reasons too. The trasliteration is good. Some books use 'ch' for a 'j' and 'sh' for 'ch' and I don't know why. The other thing is that it has Thai script. Without it you can't point to anything in the book which I always had to do and if you start learning their alphabet it's nice to have it there to make things clearer when you're confused about the sound. I don't mean to sound like a commercial but this is fun too. It gives you fun things to say to shock and impress your Thai friends. It also has a page on bad words that I showed to my wife. She told me to NEVER say those words to her or any Thai again. HA!

I haven't tried the tapes yet but hope to as soon as I get back home.

If you're going to Thailand or want to brush up I really suggest getting this book. If you might have a romantic adventure with a Thai cutie I can't suggest it enough.

Summary: Rip off
Review: If all you want to do is be able to speak baby talk in negotiating the price of a Thai prostitute this might be the book for you. But if you actually want to learn Thai or have a conversation with a Thai person without that person beating the heck out of you for being so rude - this is on the "must avoid" list

Summary: PUBLISHER̢۪S COMMENTS AND EXPLANATION
Review: PUBLISHER̢۪S COMMENTS AND EXPLANATION

We noticed the wide variation in reviews of the "Thai for Lovers Tape Set" -- some users gave it 1 star and some gave it 5! - and felt that an explanation on our part could be helpful. First, the tapes are useless without the "Thai for Lovers" book. They are not a stand-alone product but are meant to be an accompaniment to the book. Second, "Thai for Lovers" (the book and the tape set) is not designed to be a serious language course. Another book and tape set that we publish, "Thai for Beginners", serves that purpose. Instead, "Thai for Lovers" is meant to be a romantic phrase book with no pretensions of teaching the Thai language in a systematic way. The tapes follow the book exactly and phrases are spoken in natural Thai following the English translation. Some listeners pointed out that the Thai was very fast. We asked the Thai speakers to use their natural speed and intonation thinking that this would be what listeners wanted to hear. It turns out that some people like it and others would prefer a slower pace. In the next edition we will reconsider and possibly have the Thai voice talent slow down a bit. In the meantime, we honestly believe that the "Thai for Lovers" book and tape set offer the best and most complete Thai romantic phrase book available. The potential they have to help open doors to new or improved relationships make them a five star bargain indeed!

Our company is doing its best to help our readers with the Thai language and to maintain quality products....

Summary: Rip off - Avoid at all cost
Review: The authors claim this is a companion guide to the book, Thai For Lovers. I bought both. The book is just a bunch of rude phrases without a glossary or dictionary - and the tape is just the lightning quick insulting Thai phrases delivered by the Thai bargirl who married the guy who wrote this book. You can't learn Thai from this...there is no way one can learn the pronunciation...and the phrases are way too impolite to use in society. Avoid this at all cost.
