Summary: Clever?
Review: This book is a fascinating look at the life of a geisha and Japanese culture. The only thing that bothered me was the development- or lack thereof- of character in Sayuri. Over and over again she is described as a "clever" girl, and yet she pines and pines away for a man long after she should have been old enough and wise enough to realize she was wasting her life away. Although she does reflect, "what if I came to the end of my life and realized that I'd spent every day watching for a man who would never come to me?" she still never moves on. It would have been much more satisfying for me if she had chosen to go with her good friend, Nobu. Then, the lesson learned would have been that we shouldn't spend our lives waiting, but instead that we can and should take action and control the direction of our lives, and also that sometimes it is possible to fall in love with a friend. The way the story is written, however, Sayuri gets a somewhat fairy tale ending- one that left me disappointed.

Summary: Memoirs of a Geisha - Second time Around
Review: This book was so good, that I read it TWICE! (2 years gap in between). I enjoyed it more the second time around, paying more careful attention to the characters - there are many and I kept track of all the names. I really felt transported to the period and culture of the Geisha's life. I was sorry when I came to the last page....

Summary: Excellent
Review: This book got off to a rather slow start, but if you stick with it, you won't be sorry. This is an excellently written book. I never knew anything at all about geishas before reading this book. I had only ever heard the word and didn't even know what a geisha was. Through excellent story-telling, this book follows the life of Sayuri, a young girl who is sold away from her family to be trained as a geisha. I learned a lot reading this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Summary: Totally enthralling
Review: What an amazing book. I was so engrossed in all the nuances of the storyline, and was FLOORED when I realized *spoiler alert* that this finely-tuned, well-written body of work was all fiction! Arthur Golden has certainly done his research and deserves high props for marvelous depth and scope of interest. The story is so detailed that you cannot help but learn all these wonderful nuances of Japanese culture, but it is such a joy to read that you are sad when the end comes. Please invest a few days of your life to experience this wonderful book and pass it on to a friend or co-worker. My copy is on its 4th reader since I received it as a gift last year :)

Summary: Not True?
Review: I actually borrowed this book from the library and my dog literally ate the cover off (thank god for hard backs) so I had to purchase it from the library. After reading it however I was thankful for that result as I can read it again and again and pass it on to others.
It is so beautifully written, so wonderfully crafted that the fictional author created in the beginning of the book had me for the remainder of the story. Her voice came through so clearly, there was no doubt in my mind it was a biography. The story is so inspirational I wanted it to be true. It took me a while to accept that it wasn't but the theme and message that came across though the reading was worth it all the while. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

Summary: amazing and disappointing
Review: Great book- light and delicate language, good humor, an interesting insight into a woman psychology and... such a frustrating ending! I was horrified when the beautiful world created by Mr. Golden suddenly started to turn into something you can see only on a soap-opera channel! Perhaps if I havent read the last pages of the book I would have given it all 5 stars. Maybe it still deserves more than three, but I'm just so angry..

Summary: A must read Masterpiece
Review: I bought Memoirs of a Geisha sometime around exam week and Boy was that a bad idea. I couldn't even put this book down to study. My mom finally had to resort to hiding the book in order to get me to study for my exams. I think it is probably one of my most favorite books ever. And it transcends all age barriers. I loved this book and I'm sixteen and My neighbor across the street, who's a thirty something mother of two, loved it just the same. Its just an amazing story and a wonderful work of litterature. Buy the Book!

Summary: One Incredible Read!
Review: While planning a trip to Japan, a friend recommended that I read this book because she thought it would help me get excited and increase my curiosity in the culture. I can't believe I almost didn't listen to her! The author certainly has a knack for being able to discribe situations, places, and experiences. He does this so well that you are convinced that you are there and have a hard time snapping back to reality. The writing is so beautifully done!

This book keeps you going page after page, and when done leaves you yearning for more. I just purchased even more books about Geishas. I can't wait until they arrive even though I know I may never read another book as well written as this. One of the best books I have ever read!

Summary: Life without hope is not life worth living
Review: This novel tells the extraordinary life of an extraoridinary girl. Chiyo, later known as Sayuri, led a life full of sadness, hardship, discipline, perseverance & determination. One thing that made Sayuri unique from the other geishas was her brighter disposition amidst the loneliness her culture brought & the events that have transpired during that time. For although Sayuri obeyed & accepted life & its consequences, as was expected of women that time, she never lost hope & focus in attaining her dreams.

This novel also gives us a glimpse of Japan's unique & artistic culture. A glimpse, because it is like taking a peek behind a thick curtain, & finding that what lies behind is different, interesting & causes you to desire, to know & see more.
