Summary: Emotionally charged and great!
Review: The story has hills and valleys and so many emotional things happened throughout that I wasn't expecting. This is a great book club book because I wished I had someone to talk about it with when I finished!

Summary: PEEK INTO THE LIFE OF A GEISHA.......
Review: I finally had to read this book to see what all of the "hoopla" was about. Now I know! Beautifully penned tale about a young Japanese girl who is sold by her family...and thrust into a life as a young maid in a faraway town. Alone and unhappy, Chiyo remembers forever the kindness shown her by the handsome Chairman, who find her crying--and gives her his handkerchief to dry her tears. Although her life is further complicated by the presence Hatsumomo, the moneymaking geisha of the okiya where she lives and works, Chiyo finds strength in the memory of the Chairman. Known for her remarkable grey eyes, Chiyo is eventually taken under the wing of another, more successful geisha--the beautiful Mameha, from another okiya. Under her tutelage, Chiyo--now known as Sayuri--becomes one of the most successful geisha ever in Gion. But the beautiful grey-eyed geisha dreams forever of the Chairman..

This book was a lesson in a Japanese lifestyle and culture, a story full of grief, and lastly a love story. Not to be missed.

Summary: Totally Drawn Into The Story!!
Review: From the very first page I was drawn into this very entertaining story of a young girls coming of age and eventually taking her place as a renowned Geisha. Mr. Golden's writing style is through and attention grabbing. Although this is a work of fiction and not in fact a true memoir this is still a very well written novel and one that I would highly recommend to anyone.

Summary: Awesome read...I couldn't put it down

Summary: Emotional story told with the restraint typical of a geisha
Review: This beautifully-written, detailed story not only carries the reader through the complete range of emotions, it is also chock-full of interesting information on the training and politics of the geisha society. The author maintains the polite, restrained voice of the geisha throughout the book, without deviation--quite a feat! This is a thoroughly engaging book, not to be missed. I'm planning on reading it again!

Summary: charming, tragic, and informative all at the same time
Review: Absolutely charming. In spite of the brutally accurate description of the subservient role women faced (still?) in Japan, I was immediately fond of the main character and the purity of her perspective on life. If this is Golden's first published novel, I look forward to his future works. Like the song "Hawkmoon 269" by U2, similes emerge as this authors favorite literary tool. While they are darned-good similes there frequency brought me out of the Gion district of Kyoto and back into the chair in which I sat.

Summary: Memoirs of a Geisha leave some of the very best memories!
Review: I cannot really tell you what a beautiful novel this is. You have to read it. I can't really tell you how the story becomes so real, draws you in and holds you till the very last page. You just have to read it. I can't really describe how interesting and believable the characters are, or how strongly the author has drawn out a masterpiece. A part of history that broadens any misconceptions one may have about the life a geisha.
It is a classic story with beautiful words written like poetry.
I felt what the characters felt, I laughed sometimes and I cried sometimes. Sometimes I smiled to myself at the understanding of what I was reading.
It's a lovely, wonderful, breathtaking novel. Read it. At least once. Go and buy it and put it on that shelf next to all your other very favorite books.
It truly belongs in any book lovers collection.
A bittersweet joy.

Summary: Memoirs of a Reading
Review: I am a young reader and I am somewhat picky about which books I can read. "Memoirs of a Geisha" was the most incredible story I have ever received from a novel, and I have claimed it to be my favorite book ever since I read it last Spring. Never before have I been transported so completely into not only a setting, but the thoughts and feelings of a girl. I cannot really describe how completely Arthur Golden emersed me into his beautiful story. It is realistic in the fact that life is full of shocking twists and turns. After reading this book, I have not been able to read a novel completely through... Other novels just don't measure up! This was so great for me beacuse I love culture, history, life stories, and excitement.

Summary: a pleasure to read
Review: Well-written, well-researched, engaging, and a pleasure to read, this book allows a rare glimpse into the world of the early 20th century Japanese geisha. I felt close to the main character and the story moved quickly and often surprisingly. The only annoyance I found was an overabundance of analogies and metaphors.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: beautiful
Review: This is a beautiful work on many levels. It is easy to read, difficult to put down, and impossible to forget. I can't completely understand or explain it, but it gives you a sense of peace, even in the tragedy. I am far from a feminist, and I am a bit afraid of saying this, but it gave me a sense of what it is to be a woman. It is a portait of humanity.
