Rating: Summary: Probably the best book I ever read Review: The Source is one of the most incredible books I have ever read. It has opened my eyes to the world of Judaism and its hard, solid history. It took me months to read it, but that's because each story had a profound impact on me. I found myself, after each story, sitting there and just thinking about the story, its meaning, its implications. No other book has had such an effect on me. I recommend this book to the highest degree.
Rating: Summary: Not great for school... Review: I, a child of 14 was forced to read this book for an honors english class (read book over summer, write essay over school), and it was not a good choice of the teachers. Personally, i don't find Judiasm too enthralling, I could barely read 100 pages of this book, much less more than 1000. I (as a common opinion among my peers) find this book very dry, and unless you're heavily into Judiasm, I would not suggest this book, although you may find it interesting, if in your spare time, you tend to read the encyclopedia.
Rating: Summary: This Book Introduced Me to Michener Review: This is a fascinating story covering the history of an acheological site in Isreal -- spanning thousands and thousands of years. Michener takes the reader on a literary time machine through the many epochs -- the stone ages, man's religious experience and encounter with his God, the times of Alexander the Great, the Roman period, the Crusades, the Ottoman Empire, and on to modern times. This book will open your eyes to the glorious history of Isreal and her people, and the challenges they had to overcome throughout the years to remain a (the Chosen) people -- challenges such as young Hebrew men becoming assimilated into the Greek culture during the time of Alexander the Great, the Emperor Nero and his descision to level the Temple in Jerusalem to rubble, the Crusades and the Inquisition, the Ottoman Empire and the culture clash with Islam, and may others. After reading this book, you will be amazed at how much the people of Isreal had to endure throughout the many epochs, and still managed to survive and thrive. This book is a tremendous testimony to a proud and great people -- On their many contributions to mankind, the sufferings they had to endure throughout history, and their resiliency to survive and prosper. This is a great book; definitely worth having in your library.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Book Review: An amazing book. I read it while traveling through Israel and I saw exactly what Michener was writing about. It made everything come to life. Anyone who wants to know anything about the history of Israel, needs to read this book. I already knew a lot of the history but I still couldn't put it down. A must read.
Rating: Summary: Epic, Gripping, Fascinating, and Stunning Review: James Michener gives us a fascinating history lesson in his usual grand style. The books size (1078 pages) will turn off a few and that is unfortunate, because they are missing out on a life changing experience. This book will enhance your knowledge of why conflicts occur in the Middle East, and although everyone has heard of the Holocaust, they may not know about the Spanish Inquisition, and all the other points throughout history where Jews are slaughtered by Christians. I was taught a great deal from this book, and I thank God for creating Michener, because he gave so much to all of us through his astounding books.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: The Source was a great novel and a great source of historical facts. A must read for anyone wanting to learn about the history of Judaism or religion.
Rating: Summary: A great read for all! Review: This story of an archaeological dig at tell Makor, Israel is an astounding piece of literature! Michener uses accurate information to tell an inspiring story that takes the reader from 10,000 BC to AD 1964 in the history of the artifacts found at the tell. It includes wonderful stories that make the reader think and I reccommend it to anyone, especially those interested in archaeology.
Rating: Summary: a classic for many reasons Review: What makes _The Source_ so rereadable and interesting? There's a lot to like: watching the waves of time and humanity wash over a spot in Palestine, the unfolding of a modern archaeological dig with concurrent storytelling about the findings of that dig, a deep look into the Jewish and Arab cultures of the region, richly developed characters with little to moderate stereotyping, and its fair share of humour. The portrayal is every bit as vivid as any of Leon Uris' novels--but more balanced. Strongly recommended from the point of view of fiction, Near Eastern studies, or simple appreciation of fine authorship.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful trip back through history Review: One of Michener's best novels, "The Source" ranks up there with "Sarum", "Cold Mountain" and "The Triumph and the Glory" at the summit of superb historical fiction novels. Michener's masterpeice brings history to life as only the best novels of this fascinating genre can, the characters are vividly drawn, the setting and action portrayed with authenticity, and the valor and heroic nature of the humankind's struggle to understand our place in this world brought home to the reader with style and grace.
Rating: Summary: my review Review: This is my favorite book. I must have read it already five times. Every time I pick it up, it feel like the first time! I love the way Michener makes us learn and travel through the ages and history, by following what is unearthed at an archaelogical site in Israel. Beautifully written and a joy to read!
