Summary: Turtle good
Review: This book was turtle good. The more I think about it the more I want to share it. This was... "Mixed Up Files" in Venice. This was danger and mystery and great kindness, and desperation. This was no parents and bad parents and rowboats and cats.
I want to row my boat to see the subtle, scary magic of the Isle of Secrets. Could I, would I, have made the choice that the Thief Lord made? This book may not leap across the finish line like some books, but slow and steady, it gets there. Right onto my list of books to read again, and remember and share.

Summary: For Children and Parents!
Review: My sons and I both enjoyed The Thief Lord, yet for different reasons. I appreciated the superb writing style of the author, as well as the descriptive setting, memorable characters and shroud of mystery. My sons thought it was "cool", "funny" and obviously a great adventure for them, as the pages kept turning. I highly recommend for young adults, as well as parents.

Summary: Enchanting book for all ages!
Review: As an 8th grade class at my school we read The Thief Lord and were able to meet the author when she came to America to visit only 3 schools. She was just as wonderful as her book. It will pull readers into the mysterious world of Venice to join a group of thieves. It is full of humor, mystery, and adventure. I would recommend this book to readers of all ages!!

Summary: An inspiring book
Review: I sunk my teeth in reading this book from cover to cover in three days. The character development is pretty sound. Our kids can undoubtedly manage the mysterious and adventure in the story.

The most disbutable pieces of the story are the unconventional stuff about thiefing, lying, running away from home and having fully grownup in a momemnt and etc. Those ideas, out of question, challenge the thought of kids (and us as parents). I strongly recommend parental guidance for kids to reading this book. But, anyway, it is a very good material for teaching and sharing with kids. We shouldn't portrait a perfect world like those in fairy tales to kids. Throughout our lifes, there are loads of tough decisions have to made in choosing what is right and what is easy. Neither a brat nor a simple-minded kid is expected to be brought up. We need them to know the lines of our world and guide them to find their way. I am dying for more books from Cornelia Funke to explore our imperfect world.

Summary: Enjoyable and Fun
Review: THE THIEF LORD, by German writer Cornelia Funke, is one of the few *new* books that I've come across recently that was able to keep me engrossed until the very end. I found the story to be delightful, and especially enjoyed the setting of Venice, Italy. Funke's writing style is a pleasure to read, neither convoluted or overly simplistic. Her characters are likeable, even Prosper and Bo's "evil" aunt and uncle, and overall THE THIEF LORD is a fun and magical book that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

After their parents die, Prosper and Bo run away from their aunt and uncle (who, of course, want to adopt only the younger, cuter Bo, and send Prosper off to boarding school), making their way all the way to the city of Venice, Italy, which they had heard much of in the stories told by their late mother. There, they are taken into a gang of street kids who are under the guidance of the mysterious Scipio, also known as the Thief Lord. Prosper and Bo feel safe until they realize that their aunt and uncle have not only tracked them to Venice, but have also hired a private detective to track them down with the aim of recovering Bo. From there the adventure takes off, as the children dodge the detective while at the same time work to secure a mysterious object for an equally mysterious "Conte."

Underlying Fuke's work is a tale about being a child and growing up, and whether or not one is truly more desireable than the other. As said earlier, THE THIEF LORD is a book that could be read aloud to the whole family, or enjoyed by individual readers on their own. Either way, recommended reading level is around 10-years-old.

Enjoy!

Summary: The Thief Lord will steal your heart!
Review: After the death of their mother, Prosper and Bo run away to Venice - a city their mother loved and told many stories about - in an effort to escape their horrible Aunt Esther. They take up with a band of thieves, lead by the Thief Lord, Scippio - but it is soon discovered the Scippio is more (or perhaps less) than what he claimed to be. While trying to keep from being found out by a private detecive (hired by Aunt Esther), Scippio and his gang are asked to pull off a major job - with some major secrets - that will leave them richer than they could ever imagine... but at what price?

The Thief Lord has been hailed as the "next Harry Potter" - which seems to be the case of almost every children's book coming out these days. But I disagree. The Thief Lord can not even compare to Harry Potter because they aren't even in the same genre! While it has been called a fantasy, The Thief Lord is, at its heart, an adventure - a modern Oliver Twist. Venice gives the book an old world flavor that is delightful and magical. Young readers are sure to delight in the ways the Thief Lord's gang outsmarts the adults and triumphs in their quest and readers of ALL ages will have a ball with this book. The Thief Lord a rollicking, fun ride - I can't wait to read more by this author!

Review: I thought it was great. It is really adventurous. It is sometimes funny. parts of it are sad, but otherwise its a fantastic book!

Summary: It's all hype--this is NOT the next Harry Potter
Review: Pickpocketing, spending counterfeit money, and running away to live in an abandoned movie theater seem to be acceptable behavior for a child according to Cornelia Funke. I got so excited when I heard "The Thief Lord" was the next Harry Potter but, unfortunately, I found that it was all hype. This book runs on longer than a marathon with lots of unnecessary, stupid plot changes. Cornelia Funke introduces some pretty far-fetched ideas in a merry-go-round that can change a person's age, and two sensible adults who take in five juvenile deliquents. This book was, over all, a waste of five hours of my life and next time I hear that a book is the quality of Harry Potter, I hope I won't be so disappointed. I advise parents not to buy this book for their children and nobody should ever call this book "the next Harry Potter."

Summary: "One of Germany's best-selling authors strikes again!"
Review: Our story begins with Victor Getz, a private detective. One day Victor is trying on a moustache when he gets some new clients. Meanwhile Prosper, Bo and Hornet are ducking and dodging in a crowded market street. Adventure from the first chapter on! Very well written.

Summary: :)
Review: ...THE THIEF LORD by Cornelia Funke is a very nice story that stands on its own...it was a fast read, although I am a bit above the target age, so that might have been why. The descriptions of Venice were great. Most of the characters were likeable without being perfect, something that is very hard for most authors to pull off. My only problem was that the "secret" of the merry-go-round was not that original--just read SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES by Ray Bradbury after you read THE THIEF LORD, and you'll see what I mean.
