Summary: A story worth reading--very well done!
Review: I thought the story was very well written and the narrator, a young boy, was completely believable. The story shows warmth and love for his family and the hardships they endure, each family member deals with a very difficult situation in their own way and the author reveals each character in wonderful detail, you begin to know them and care for each of them. The narrator's younger sister is completely believable if you have ever known a remarkable child, as many can children possess an astonishing amount of talent, insight, and wisdom at a very young age just as this young lady does. This young girl deals with her troubles through a story that she is constantly working on. This little bit of extra story line brings more insight into how these children are dealing with a very troubling situation involving their older brother. The story is definitely worth reading and reads quickly.

Summary: definitely one of my favorites
Review: beautifully written, almost poetic...characters are believable, sincere, and very loveable, i came to care for them as if i knew them...i went through such a range of emotions - laughing outloud, crying several times, gasping, holding my breath, etc...the power of belief and the bond of the family touched me and drew me into their world...

Summary: A Disappointment
Review: I was rather bored during the reading of this book. The story the author tried to tell was interesting, but told in a slow and dull manner. What some may find descriptive, I found horribly boring and I repeatedly found myself saying GET TO THE POINT.

Summary: This book has HEART
Review: As Mark Twain said, the difference between the right word and the almost right word is like the difference between lightning and the lightning bug. Leif Enger's first novel is lightning. It is a poignant and lyrical study of character, faith, beauty, language, and above all, heart. I tend to avoid books written about children because writers too often seem unable to express the child's point of view in a believable and interesting manner. Enger does so. And he writes of adult characters (especially the father), who have quiet strength, faith and morals. My only disappointment is that he hasn't had another novel published.
