Rating: Summary: One of those books that stick with you Review: I just finished this book and continue to be in awe over it. It's not just a book on war but on leadership, it greatly describes how both Lt. Gen. Moore lead his men but how each of his subordinates lead as well. While it never deals with why we were there it doesn't need too. Instead it tells a story of how our troops fought together like brothers and died together like brothers. It is easy to grasp Moore's love for his man in both the way he treated them then and how he treats them now, He not only names what most of his men did after the battle but names each man killed, where he was from, and a bit of personal history of that man. This books strong point though is the fact that when possible Moore lets the men who were there tell it like it was. I would not only recomend this book for the military types but and Viet Nam buffs, but to anyone who truly wants to know how to lead people God Bless all those went, and God speed all those who were brough home.

Rating: Summary: History All Americans Should Know Review: I recommend this honest and very straight forward book to all who care to know more about the Vietnam conflict. As a kid who was born in the 1960's, my appreciation of the soldiers who fought and gave their lives has been limited to the various movies and stories of the era.The authors of this book have done an incredible job gathering information from their fellow soldiers (and in some cases those soldiers families) in order to convey and portray what can only be described as an incredibly poignant account of their experiences. I know that this will be a story I will one day recommend that my own children read in an effort to improve their understanding of the sacrafices such brave people have made for the sake of our continued freedom.

Rating: Summary: On The Ground At Landing Zone X-ray Review: I wasn't quite old enough to fight in Vietnam, but after reading this book and listening to this tape, it's as though I had been there. The book was absolutely gripping and the tape ... well ... for those of you who saw the recent movie, Joseph L. Galloway is the on-scene reporter. His rough, unpolished voice is PERFECT for this tape. It's Hal Moore's story recounted by the reporter who flew into battle with him. A priceless, classic combination. I've worn out the tape already ... time to reorder. (Hint: Make sure you get the Galloway edition. The CD has a slick Hollywood-type doing the narration. It's not the same.)

Rating: Summary: Book is great. These men fought bravely for America Review: The book is great. A movie is being made with Mel Gibson. Hopefully it will do justice to the book. I recommend the audiobook over the text. The audiobook is great and captures the intensity of the scene. The Vietnam Veterans got screwed over by the government and by the American people. They went to Vietnam in service of their country. They were handicapped by a bunch of politically correct rules such as don't fire unless fired upon. In combat the group that doesn't fire first routinely suffers lots of casualties. LBJ bragged that he had more control over how the war was fought than any previous president. This was unfortuneate. Again, the Gulf war is an example of how wars should be fought. Amass overwhelming force and then win decisively. Colonel Harold Moore led his men skillfully and bravely. Let us not forget that the NVA were assisted by China and the Soviet Union. Let us not forget that Stalin massacred a lot more people than any other military dictator in this century and his successor Kruschev had said of America, "We will bury you."....."Russia has enough nuclear missles aimed at the USA to destroy every city in the USA"....Kruscheve and the Soviet Union had threatened the USA with nuclear weapons just 3 yrs earlier in Cuba. The point is that at that time in 1965, the USA was afraid of communist expansion. The reason for going to fight in Vietnam to stop the global expansion of communism is understandable. The mistake was in that other options were not tried and that LBJ lied about the Tonkin Gulf resolution etc. However, the men who represented us did so bravely and deserved more from their countrymen and their countrie's government.
Rating: Summary: it stays with you even after you've read it Review: This book is a very real and truthful account of what happened. I read it in a few days and could not put it down. The story goes into the lives of the men there and you will be horrified, stunned, and angry. This book is impossible to read as an outsider; it draws you in and stays with you for a while afterward. The personal accounts are so chilling and real. Also, the lives of the families at home, the political happenings and the aftermath confront you with shocking realizations.
