Rating: Summary: Four Stars for A Year Down Yonder Review: I read the book A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck. I gave this book four star. The book was very well written and was a lot of fun to read. The book is about a girl who has to go live with her grandmother until her family can bring in more money. During her stay she is part of many events. One of them were when her cat had a kitten. When the painter that comes to stay with them invites a woman over and a snake is found in the ceiling. They even have a turkey shooting. Don't worry they don't use real turkey's. Those are only some of the fun and exciting events that happen. So if you want to find out if Mary Alice's parents can get more money so they can bring her home and find out about more of the funny things that happen then pick up this book.
Rating: Summary: Grandma's back for more excitement!! Review: What surprising thing does Grandma Dowdel have up her sleeve next?15-year-old Mary Alice returns to Grandma's house in southern rural Illinois in this sequel to "A Long Way From Chicago". But this time in 1937, her brother isn't with her ... and it's for a whole school year instead of just the summer. Great adventures lay ahead from the first day of school ... pecans and pumpkins at Halloween ... the Armistice Day turkey shoot ... the Christmas play ... secret Valentines ... to a tornado at the end of the school year. This book, which won the Newbery Award in 2001, is fully of hilarious adventure. The town talked about that year's Christmas program for years after. ...
Rating: Summary: A great book for most readers Review: I have to respectfully disagree with a previous reviewer who said this was not a book for younger students. As both teacher and principal of a small elementary school, I read "A Year Down Yonder" to my sixth-graders last October. They loved it, and couldn't wait for me to get the book out each day. In fact, they didn't want me to stop when reading time ended. Being able to explain a little bit about the historical context of the book helps, but the stories stand on their own as well. Most students can relate to being the new kid in school, and all that it entails. I highly recommend this book for fifth grade and up.

Rating: Summary: A Year Down Yonder Review: "A Year Down Yonder," the sequel to "A Long Way From Chicago," takes place afterwards and is set from Mary-Alice's point of view, where as "Along Way From Chicago," is set from the perspective of her older brother, Joey. This book begins when Mary-Alice is sent to live with her grandmother out in the country. Mary-Alice's grandmother doesn't think twice about breaking the law, stealing pecans and pumpkins, but there is a good side to everyone and grandma is no exception. Nothing could have seemed worse, but when a tornato comes unexpectedly, grandma saves the day. The two cats, safe from the wind, and an elderly deaf man gets trapped under rubble. Grandma just has her way. It is not until Mary-Alice gets to know her grandmother that she learns to trust and appreciate her. -An EXCELENT, humerous, and enjoyable read for anyone!
Rating: Summary: A Year Down Yonder Review: This book was not particularly interesting to me. A teenage girl goes to her Grandma's house for the summer. The two of them do weird stuff like go pecan picking on halloween. The Grandmother goes on a turkey shoot amd shoots turkeys. I have to admit the Grandma was kind of funny. My taste tends to be science fiction and sports so others may very well enjoy this book.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful, but not for kids... Review: This is another one of those wonderful, award-winning, young adult books that will delight all the grownups and bore the pants off the young adults. As a teacher, I read this to my group of seventh graders and they groaned each time I took the book out. It wasn't that parts of it weren't humorous, it was simply that they didn't get it. As an adult who grew up the area that the story takes place in, I loved it. Grandma is one of the most unforgettable characters you will ever read about. But it simply is not a book for young adults. Maybe high-schoolers, but not the age it is targeted to.
Rating: Summary: A tale you'll read over and over again Review: What ever happened to the sweet old grandma that everyone hears about? If have a grandma that is beyond normality like I do, this book speaks your childhood. When two young children visit their grandma, no telling what surprises are in store for them. Granny carries a shotgun, hides a toothpick under her tongue to use as necessary (normally to make her more impressionable) and can scare the living daylights out of you. If the Big Bad Wolf ever messed with this Granny, he'll wish he'd never been born. There's fun and laughter on every page. Kids will definitely adore it.
Rating: Summary: A Year Down Yonder Review: A Year Down Yonder is a great book. It's about a girl named Mary Alice who goes to her grandma's house. Mary Alice stared to go to school there, but didn't fit in at first. Of course there weren't any cars because it was 1937, so Mary Alice had to walk to school, and the other kids rode mules. In November Mary Alice got the head role of the school play as Virgin Mary (Jesus' Mother). A while after the Christmas program Mary Alice's school got a new student named Royce Mcnabb. A girl named Carleen Lovejoy liked Royce, but so did Mary Alice. Mary Alice and her nice friend Ina Mae made a plan for Valentines Day to make Carleen Lovejoy mad and it worked. The plot was interesting because you don't know what grandma would do next. For example right after Halloween grandma banged a spoon on a pan to wake Mary Alice up. A Year Down Yonder was also confusing because the author would talk about an event then he would talk about another topic then come back to the first event. Some parts of A Year Down Yonder will affect the reader in a suprised way like when Mary Alice's grandma came to her Christmas program, because she and Mary Alice never showed that they loved each other. I would recommend A Year Down Yonder for a sith grade reading project.
Rating: Summary: Corndogs A Year Down Yonder Review: A Year Down Yonder took place in 1937 right after the depression. The main charcter named Mary Alice had to move to her grandmas house after her Dad lost his job and his brother went to plant trees ot west. Mary Alice had a hard time fitting in. The kids wouldalways call her " Rich Chicago Girl. Mary Alice was a sweet little girl and her grandma was a wild, wackey woman. So wackey that one time she stole a neighbors tractor and rammed it into a tree. Not only did she damage the tractor but she stole all the pecans that fell of the tree. A Y ear Down Yonder is a very exciting book that keeps you on the edge of your seat. There's always an exciting part in the story. You never want to put the book down and you never get bored. The book taught me to never give up. I suggest A Year Down Yonder to any one who likes an exciting book.
