Rating: Summary: 5 stars isn't enough. Review: Though Campbell's style is a bit hard to get into, once you commit yourself this will be one of the best reads ever. No book I've ever read has taken me so far into another world. It changed the way I look at the world.
Rating: Summary: I could only take reading a few pages of this book. Review: Wow, this guy is way out there he is brilliant, but what is a pain is that he doen't follow any one story through when he is discribing it. He trows in so many different sotries, parables, ect. and jumps around I had a very difficult time following what he was saysing. The Keys section of his book is worth the price of the book, it is about 4 pages long. And really good, I wish he could write the way he did in that section in the whole book, but unfortunately he did not. You have to be way way way into mythology to be able to make sense out of this book. Good Luck! I agree with the fisrt revewier, rent the trilogy.
Rating: Summary: root canals are more pleasant Review: A sure cure for insomnia this book is. A horrific and dry look at one of the many archetypes pondered in Jungian psychology, do yourself a favor and "follow your bliss" in your pocketbook. Rent the Star Wars Trilogy. It costs less and is far less boring in illustrating the heroes journey.
Rating: Summary: One of the most important books ever! Review: This book is more than just a study for myth. It is a must for all writers, especially screenplay writers. Read not only for to learn how to set your characters on the Hero's Journey, but how to set yourself down the Hero's Path as well.
Rating: Summary: Most Important Book of the 20th Century! Review: This book is, in my humble opinion, the most important book of the 20th Century. Campbell provides the key to unlocking the rich, inner meaning of the world's myths and hero stories. All these myriad hero tales, from Moses to Buddha, from apparently simple childrens' fables to grand epics, are seen as roadmaps for our own journey as individuals. Campbell asks: "Why do all of the hundreds of cultures have hero stories? Why do all of these hero stories have the exact same structure?" The answers are that this particular structure resonates in us -- we unconsiously recognize in it the story of our own journey of self-discovery. This book is a must read for any person who wants to understand energies and structures within us, that we all must face. Campbell's work is a joyful illumination of this journey. The Joseph Campbell Foundation is carrying on Campbell's insights.
Rating: Summary: Today's electronic myths are put in perspective. Review: When I first read Campbell, way back in my 1960's university days, it was because I wanted support for what I thought I saw in Tolkein's work. Brought up on British folklore, I needed someone to champion my understanding that Robin Hood, King Arthur, Superman, Christ, and Frodo were really the same person, or at least a portion thereof. Along came Luke Skywalker and I was certain. I've been using what I remembered of Campbell and had borrowed/adapted for the teaching of high school English ever since. Recently I re-read this work and was suprised to find that instead of being less relevent today, it has become more so! Is there a television protagonist alive who doesn't fit some pattern part of the hero archetype? Has anyone besides me noticed that Campbell has foreshadowed a new golden age of myth-making, the multi-media global village age?Ray MacLeod, Auburn Drive High School
Rating: Summary: Everything clicks! Review: This book somehow connected mental concepts for me like no other book has. Full of relevations. I'll be forever greatful to Campbell for opening up the Sacred to everyday life.
Rating: Summary: Inspiring and Intelligent Review: Campbell's prose is the closest thing to poetry I've ever read. He does not disappoint.
Rating: Summary: A Pleasure with a Thousand Cheers! Review: For those who enjoy shadowing the hero's walk through mythology across time and space, then this call to adventure wiil not disappoint. Campbell discussed hero mythologies in a multicultural context highlighting the symbols and meaning shared by diverse peoples. He storytells and explains. Campbell does explore concepts and beliefs in-depth; therefore, you may want to digest certain sections before reading further. The hero's venture and passage is one we have all taken; Campbell reminds us how awesome the journey is. This is a "keeper" for a home library.
Rating: Summary: A classic! Review: One of the great books of our times. An inspiration to anyone who is willing to live their life instead of just exist
