Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Charles Irving or John Dickens? Review: Charles Irving or John Dickens? hard to tell. This book is moving, delicate and full of moral problems that are either solved or not. Very true. Also, Irving is in high spirits and that is reflected in his style of writing. Despite the multilevel wonderfulness of "Garp", I think that it is "Cider House Rules" that is his best piece of writing in the sense of style and mastery of word. I am happy that I read the original English version first. Now they are making a movie based on this book featuring ... John Irving the Master himself.
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: Enough! Review: I found it t e d i o u s to get through this book. The character and plot development were so s l o w. Homer's choice at the end was inevitable. The abortion issue was fairly presented and well-developed.

I wanted to cuddle and shield them from their reality. A senitive story with a lot of chooses. I wanted to help them. Life leaves us with a lot of chooses; God Help Us All.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Ironic Irving Review: What an imagination John Irving has. In his short story 'Trying to Save Piggy Snead' we get an inkling of an idea as to why and how he can write the way he does. No doubt this book will be repopularized by the movie version. John Irving has done his best to 'protect' the story line and characters as he has written the screenplay. Notwithstanding the fact that it is easy and entertaining to just lean back and watch it on the big screen... the Cider House Rules is better told in the novel. You will not be disappointed by the movie or the novel...but by far the novel is a richer and more rewarding story.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: touching story Review: Bravo to John Irving for having the bravery to address the controversial issue of abortion in this wonderfully touching story.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: my favorite book of all time Review: I am an avid reader, reading anything from non fiction to mysteries, to "pop", but this book was my all time favorite. It is the only book that I have read 3 times (over a period of 10 years). I was anxious to see the movie and was disappointed, although a 2 hour movie cannot really compete with the complexity of Irving's many characters. Read this book!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A brilliant mind - John Irving Review: This is the third John Irving novel that I have read, and it is my favorite. I was stunned when I found myself moved to tears at the end of the story. From abortion to interracial couples to incest, Irving writes with a brave hand about sensitive issues that others would be unwilling to expose. Fill the void in your life with this remarkable book.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Pro-Choice Classic Review: I'm pro-choice because my working-class family lost my grandmother's sister to a backstreet abortion during the thirties, and my mother is named after her. I loved this book because it captures the stories of women who lived through that dark period of western history. I liked the deeply human characterisation of Doctor Larch, flaws and all, and I found it interesting that Homer changed his mind at the end when his anti- abortion viewpoints collided with reality. I'm glad that some anti-abortion readers liked the fact that the book was well-written, which it is. I can't wait for the movie, either.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: John Irving at his best! Review: I read this years ago when it was first released. It is, in my humble opinion, John Irving's best. While the author has always written well with interesting characters, those in this book have an added level of warmth and depth which makes it worth reading. His treatment of the abortion issue, regardless of one's position on the matter, is quite interesting. Not everyone appreciates Irving's style and subject matter, but this book shows why he has enjoyed such popularity over the years. The recently released movie focuses deserved attention on a very fine novel.
