Rating: Summary: May not help everyone, but it helped me Review: Sure, there are tons of fad diets. But the idea that everyone responds differently to different foods is not really a fad. The theory is fairly sound, and may provide further insight to childhood likes and dislikes regarding various food types. If you have acid refluct or other stomach ailments, this is far superior than perscription drugs that merely coat your GI tract. And the interesting side benefits, especially for those conspiracy theorists, is that you quickly learn, if you are AB, how much high frutose corn syrup American injest daily! If you are on a budget, the book costs about 3 bottles worth of Mylanta.
Rating: Summary: Eating different and feeling better. Review: I was very intrigued with the content and theory of the Dr. D'Adamo book. Being a type O blood type, I started on the recommended diet of high protein low carbohydrate and removed wheat products from my diet. I did not have to starve myself, I just selected to avoid certain foods that were considered unhealthy for my blood type(chemistry). As predicted the extra weight came off easily and I felt better. But as also predicted my allergies improved and my routine sinus headaches disappeared. This is a must read for all who seek good health and want to reverse the aging process(eating the "wrong" foods cause toxins to build up in the body and ages the body.) Very sensible approach to weight control and health maintenance.
Rating: Summary: Great diet, but please lose the anthripology Review: I am an A blood-type, and this diet made a very good change in my life. I was raised on a huge meat diet, and I usually stank pretty badly; sweat, breath, feet, etc. For a couple years I'd been staying away from most red meat and dairy, which had helped, and D'Adamo's diet confimed my suspicions. I've not lost much weight (5'10" 190lbs), but I feel better, and best of all, don't smell anymore! It's amazing, even my breath is "cured" :) Using Stevia as a sweetener has help this immesurably. A year after I started the blood-type diet, I was diagnosed with Medulary Sponge Kidney. After I was informed of this, I went through the metabolic-typing tests, and it turns-out that D'Adamo's diet, the Metabolic-Typing diet, and the diet the doctors gave me for Medulary Sponge Kidney agree almost exactly. I don't follow the diets perfectly, but since meat has been completely cut-out of my diet, I feel, look, and smell much better, and I get sick much less frequently. I recommend the Blood-Type Diet as a basis for everyone to start with, and find-out what's best for them.
Rating: Summary: Don't believe the skeptics! They are wrong! Review: I may owe my life to the genius of Peter D'Adamo. I have Hepatitis C and had one foot in the grave before reading ER4YT. I have gone from being sick and dying to someone enjoying enormous energy and stamina. My liver enzyme activity has almost returned to normal. I am a type A and can tell the difference almost immediately after cheating on my diet. It amazes me how many people scoff and doubt because it doesn't sound to them like it will work. They are stupid and lazy. The same people would have believed that the earth is flat because the scientists of their day said so. I seriously doubt that anybody has so solidly hit the nail on the head so completely as Dr. D'Adamo. It isn't the authors fault that following the diet might cost more than eating foods that slowly kill. Farmers used to grow spelt instead of wheat. It isn't the Doctors fault that wheat has become the predominant grain crop in the USA. If spelt bread costs you more and it's on your diet you are free to bake your own. People will spend a fortune on their vices and recreation yet whine because a loaf of edible bread costs more than the stuff they are eating. If you factor in savings on medical costs and put some value on being healthy and living longer I would say it's worth it. Almost everybody who criticizes the diet either hasn't tried it, didn't give it a chance or followed it a little bit. But maybe I am a little biased since this diet has saved my life. It's not as if I wasn't trying to eat healthy and use common sense before trying the diet. Give the diet some time and it will prove itself. And pay attention to how often you are allowed certain foods. If the diet says you can eat 3 servings of poultry a week don't eat 13 servings and say the diet makes you sicker. If you are eating prepared foods (mistake) read the ingredients and make sure you are really following the diet. Anyone who critizes the diet based on their self proclaimed knowledge without trying it is a FOOL, I don't care if they have PHD or DR after their name. If any of you Doctors spend 1/10th of 1% of the time studying this diet as the author has I will listen to your criticism. Otherwise shut the hell up and go push your pills on someone who still thinks that you have some knowledge on health.
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK SAVED MY LIFE Review: After being ill for over 10 years and not really knowing why, I was "led" to this book. I am blood type "O" and have always eaten what I considered to be a healthy diet. It might have been, for someone else, but most of the food I was eating was exactly what I should have been avoiding! I've had food allergy tests at the hospital but they showed no abnormalities even though I have proved to myself that the foods I should avoid DO make me ill. After less than two weeks following the diet there was a noticeable improvement in my health. After several weeks of doing the diet, my limbs stopped permanently aching, the continous headaches went away, I had more energy, my hair stopped falling out and I was going down in size. I can't always stick rigidly to the diet because there are days when I am out and need to eat. Sometimes I have eaten the "forbidden" bread because a sandwich has been the only food available and within a couple of hours my eyes swell up and my lymph glands also swell up. All those sceptics who think this diet is a load of rubbish should try it before they judge! My life has been a misery for 10 years and now I am like a new person because of something so simple as changing my diet. I really feel that Peter D'Adamo has saved my life and I have nothing but thanks and admiration for him. By the way, I am no hypochondriac either! I am an intelligent woman who thankfully has the sense to be openminded. All my friends have said that I look 10 years younger [that's a bonus] because I no longer look and feel ill! I would recommend this book to anyone who has ME/CFS symptoms, feels constantly tired, has permanent headaches, eats sensibly but is still overweight or has any digestive problems, just try it. It worked for me.
Rating: Summary: What Crap! Review: Even those with but a modicum of common sense will realize that the ideas in this book defy the most basic logic. As a blood type A I do not possess the characteristics which the author attributes to all persons of blood type A. I therefore need to make no further effort to dismiss the conclusions that are presented. As proof of his ridiculous suppositions, the author offers the evidence that Presidents Johnson, Nixon and Carter as well as Adolf Hitler were of blood type A and all possessed similar flaws. To suggest that if they had been vegetarians and followed his diet would have solved their problems is too far fetched for this reader.
Rating: Summary: Seems to have worked for me Review: I have no idea about the science, but I tried the diet (I'm type A.) I was already a vegetarian, but after I eliminated the foods that he suggested (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, etc.) my skin improved and I lost weight very quickly. And I was already eating a low-fat diet, mostly vegetables and fruits and grains, but hadn't been able to lose weight before. I did find the next book, "Live Right For Your Type" terribly confusing, though, as it contradicted what he'd said here, without explanation, and you do need to find out more information about your "type." But still, this diet did help me, and, even though some of his science might be iffy, science has proven to be mistaken before...If you are intrigued, I would take a chance, try it, and see what happens, I'm pretty sure it can't hurt. :) Perhaps run it by your physician, just to make sure...
Rating: Summary: ER4YT? I tried it. Review: Of course, it entailed getting a blood test to find out what my type was. The anthropological premise in the book is ludicrous , but I figure maybe he's got the diet part right, after all, he says he's got 15 years of history trying these diets on thousands of his own patients with great success. Why not give it a try? I found the diet difficult to adapt to, there were many normal, healthy foods which were to be avoided. Unusual, hard to find foods were to replace these. These new foods ended up being more expensive due to low supply like spelt flours, the odd grains (quinoa, amaranth), organic and free-range meats, etc. I did a LOT of food preparation, you buy almost nothing on this diet pre-made, but have to cook it all yourself from scratch. I gained weight, but was more concerned with achieving the health benefits claimed in the book. After a whole year on the diet, my blood testing turned up many negative effects even though I had followed the diet very closely for THAT WHOLE TIME. My cholesterol level had risen dramatically, I had started to have acid reflux and had to be put on medication, among other things. Why are so many foods on every blood type's 'Avoid' list? The author says its because of lectins for the most part, those little proteins in the foods which are going to 'agglutinate' your blood cells and cause all sorts of diseases for you. I started investigating lectins to see if this was true. The 'Handbook of Plant Lectins' is a good source for this information, in fact, Dr. D'Adamo cites this book regularly. What I found amazed me. Most lectins in foods agglutinate ALL or NO blood types, there are very few which are specific to only one ABO blood type. Most of the plant lectins which ARE specific to ABO type are NON-FOOD plants, like ornamentals, trees and weeds! Don't take my word for it, you can read it for yourself. After that, I started checking into the other parts of the 'blood type diet theory.' There is the matter of different ABO types having different digestive capabilities, therefore supposedly requiring very different diets. There are recent studies indicating there is no difference between people of different blood types for stomach acid production. Way back before it was discovered that stomach ulcers were caused by a bacteria (Helicobacter pylori) it was thought they were caused by too much stomach acid. H. pylori does affect people of blood type O more often than others, but that's not caused by too much stomach acid! There are just as many As on medication to lower stomach acid levels as there are other types, there are many people with O blood type who have low stomach acid levels and must take hydrochloric acid to improve digestion. The author's theory seems to be based on old research before the true cause of ulcers was found.... If you look at the books, you'll see that Dr. D'Adamo has made quite a few changes as time goes on. Why is this, since he claims so much success with his own patient population using the diets? For instance, A blood types are told they can eat 30-55 servings of grains/breads/pasta a week, which works out to 5 to 8 servings a day in his best-selling 'Eat Right for Your Type.' This is pretty close to the Standard American Diet plan for grains. However, in Live Right, the author has suddenly changed the allotted grains/breads/pasta servings to 5 to 7 a WEEK for As, with no explanation of why he has made this change. He must have noticed that in the real world, people using his bulletin board were not losing the weight they wanted to, in spite of his claimed success with his patients using this method for 15 years or more. If you have allergies, better hope you are an O blood type. This diet contains the fewest allergens of the whole group. And Dr. D'Adamo does say he thinks Os as a group are the most allergic. That must be why he set up the O diet as he did. But this premise is entirely wrong, a person of any blood type can have allergies (not to mention that one can have genetic makeup that predisposes one to any number of diseases, regardless of your ABO blood type). The best thing that can be said about these books is that the author tells every blood type to stay away from processed foods and eat more vegetables and fruits. Could that be the real reason anyone gets improvement from these diets?? Isn't eating more fruits and vegetables the same thing you hear from your own doctor? How is one gene, for ABO type, going to account for the vast differences in population susceptibility to different diseases? Even if you add in Lewis blood type (which comes up in his next book --by the way, you have to pay him about ... for a test to find out what yours is or you won't even be able to use that book), that's just two genes out of your total makeup to determine your entire health, longevity, diet, 'psychological' perspective. Are we talking science here? or science-fiction? Serious scientists and researchers must be cringing at the way their work has been twisted and misquoted for use in these books. If you try this diet for fun, go ahead (and be prepared to spend a lot of time in the kitchen). You have the odds of it working for about 1/3 of people, no effect at all for another 1/3, and about 1/3 of the people get worse, about the same odds as 'chance.' Eat Right for Your Type - a Fairy Tale; Live Right for Your Type - The Fantasy Continues.......
Rating: Summary: Complete and utter bunk... from a naturopath quack! Review: This is the most ridiculous diet theory I've ever heard of. Maybe I'll write a new diet book called "Eating Right for Your Astrological Sign" and rake in the bucks. Which blood type should be eating the candy bars, cookies, donuts, chips, soda pop, refined carbohydrates, Big Macs and french fries... did I miss something? He doesn't recommend them for any of the four groups... so GEE WIZ! Maybe just eliminating all the Junk Food from our diets would work just as well as this Junk Science Diet.
Rating: Summary: Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type Review: Following the blood type guidelines in this book is one of the best things we have ever done for our overall health & weight control. Truly life & health changing. It also helps you understand why certain diets (low-carb, low-fat, etc.)work better for some people and not for others. After only 1 month on my blood type plan a severe neck problem I had had for 12 months disappeared completely...after the chiropractor told me it would never completely heal. The only change I made was to follow this book. Also by following the supplement guidelines I have almost completely eliminated the problem I had with cold sores. There are 2 key reasons it helps for weight control: (1) Certain foods either slow down or rev up your metabolism. (2) Eating the highly beneficial foods satisfies your hunger much more completely than foods you should avoid. You will never regret the money you spend on this book
