Rating: Summary: Working well for me Review: My motivation for reading this book and trying out its recommendations was the desire to lose weight. I tried low-carb eating for two years. I seem to be one of those for whom Atkins and low carb eating does not easily result in weight loss, except a bit in the summer, but I never got over the cravings for carbs and could not stick to the regimen more than 2 weeks at a time at best. Also, I gained the weight back each winter. (I know two individuals personally who lost 60 pounds or more each while eating low-carb according to Atkins, and kept the weight off, so I can not discount Atkins for other people).
I decided to give D'Adamo's recommendations a shot. After a month of eating according to my blood type, I have lost 10 pounds (my pulse rate throughout the day is generally lower, as well). What makes the weight loss more remarkable for me is that it occurred in the dead of winter during a period of cold whether, which is usually a time I gain weight and can not lose it.
I find, too, that restricting my eating to foods listed in the book as appropriate for my blood type, is never accompanied by any cravings for other foods. On a few occasions in the past month I happened to include in my meals some food items which are in the "avoid" category for my blood type and I did experience either an elevated pulse or a very slight headache. I suppose that is an indication that the "avoid" foods really are items I should avoid.
I will continue to eat according to D'Adamo's recommendations and may post an update in the next several months.
Rating: Summary: Theory gone awry Review: I have type 'O' blood and meat and dairy makes me sick! The vegan diet I now live on is much more healthful for me.
Rating: Summary: Nonsense by every scientific criteria Review: This is a very misleading book. Several intelligent people I know have been duped by it. I skimmed it years ago and dismissed it as nonsense. But gave it a real read based on their enthusiasm. My conclusions are no different.
Funny how now there are nine books and an audiocasette. What's next? A video? The CD-ROM? It reeks of marketing gimmick being milked for more sales.
The credentials are suspect. He calls himself doctor. He is no MD or osteopath. Or even a scientist. He is a naturopath, a completely unsupported so-called holistic practioner. Not that there can be no benefit just because of that, but it raises suspicion as to credibility.
Now onto the diet itself. The radically different diets could hardly evolved in the time frame suggested. Genes don't change that fast. The blood types have never been shown to have any relationship either. The number of blood type antigens is many more than ABO and Rh.
Just for grins I checked out the diet I should supposedly eat. I am quite aware of how food effects me given many allergies as a child. The so-called bad foods are tolerated well by my system. The foods that have given me problems are not on the no list and many on the yes list. So it fails this test as well.
The success and raves above can be accounted for. First, the "aha" of the true believer. A new religion. Belief overcomes fact and alters perception. Related the placebo effect. Often any change is helpful for a while. Any restriction can lead to weight loss in the short term. Many people's prior diet was poor, so anything can be an improvement.
In a few years, this lame book will be in the bin at your used book store like the diet fads of the past.
Rating: Summary: How to Treat Your Illness or Disease with Relevant Herbs Review: Dr. Peter D'Adamo has written a very interesting adjunct to his superb book, Live Right 4 Your Type. If you have already read that earlier book, you will find this book adds to your knowledge by letting you know about the latest research about the statistical correlations of various diseases and illnesses to those with various blood types. I wrote down the illnesses that I have more frequently than other people I know, and the diseases I have experienced before reading this book. I checked my experience against what the book reports, and found a high correlation (I have had two additional problems not typical of my Type O blood, and have not experienced three problems often associated with Type O people). I did the same for my wife, who has a different blood type, and found that her pattern reasonably closely matched what is described in the book as well. Then, the book has an excellent discussion of why people with each blood type can be affected differently by each illness or disease. You are also given extensive suggestions for herbal therapies that match your herb type. I have not had experiences with the herbs that were suggested for me, so I cannot comment on how relevant they are. If you already use herbs to improve conditions, you will probably adore this book. If you don't use many herbs, you will probably appreciate understanding more about the potential strengths and weaknesses of your blood chemistry. The book is quite thorough in providing articles you can read for more details, and where to access these articles on-line. If you have not read Live Right 4 Your Type, you will find that this book covers almost the same background material but at a much higher level of abstraction. There is a fairly complete discussion of how blood types seem to have developed and what their chemical implications are. In other ways, the book is quite complete in similarity to the earlier ones. For example, you get the food indications for each blood type, essentially like the information in both Eat Right 4 Your Type and Live Right 4 Your Type. Many people are skeptical about Dr. D'Adamo's work. I found him careful about what he had to say. For example, he notes that the risk charts in the book describe how blood type "in conjunction with other factors . . . may be [associated with] an increased risk for developing a certain disease." As to the diseases and illnesses, I was impressed to see how much different cancers were broken down by the part of the body affected while different infections were also segmented. I always find it helpful to keep the research-based associations to blood type in mind when I read other books about nutrition, health, and diseases. Perhaps someday other health authors will add this perspective to their work, as well. Until then, I am very grateful to Dr. D'Adamo for helping me understand how to make the most out of being a Type O person! How can you turn your strengths and weaknesses into resources for improving the quality of your life . . . and those you care about? Keep your mind and your body full of the most helpful resources you can add! Donald Mitchell, co-author of The 2,000 Percent Solution and The Irresistible Growth Enterprise.My friend recommended this book highly and she recommended a great new beverage that replaced my morning cup of joe. Caffeine made me too jittery so I switched to a soy-based coffee that taste simply amazing. When I use my percolator it comes out with a rich, full bodied taste. Rating: Summary: Highly Recommended Reading Review: Dr. D'Adamo's book explores the connection between a person's dietary needs and that person's blood type. Basically, the idea is that we are all individuals, with different dietary needs. In order to remain healthy, we must consume foods that are beneficial for our blood type. And, since not everyone has the same blood type, there is no single diet plan that will work for everybody.
Dr. D'Adamo's work may not completely revolutionize our diet, but, at the least, he does bring up the idea that our genes should determine what our diet should be. I recommend this book to anyone who is planning to go on a diet. The ideas presented, and additionally the suggested diet for each blood type, might give us some additional weapons in our arsenal in the fight to stay lean and healthy.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Food for Thought.... Review: Its' amazing that with time and research, the medical and holistic people of the world will find an answer or at least 4 answers to help us. Truly, this book and others to follow from the authors will help more than anyone can imagine.....a must read for everyone!
Since I have been on this diet, all the cravings for junk food have gone. I was someone who lived for sugar and now I do not want any of it. I use to crave coffee in the morning as well but realized I didn't want that wired up feeling & acid stomach.
