Summary: Too much arm-waving
Review: I bought this book from Amazon after a referral from a friend who lives by it. The biggest problem I have with it is that the author presents virtually no scientific justification or research results behind any of the claims he makes. He freely dispenses all sorts of advice (e.g. type As shouldn't eat oranges because they interfere with digestion) and then expects readers to just take his word for it. As the world's biggest skeptic, I would normally advise people to stay well clear of this one, except for one little problem: the diet does in fact appear to be working, at least in my case. I didn't modify my lifestyle, and I haven't followed the diet to the extent that the author would have liked me to. I have, however, made a concerted effort to cut down on many of the foods he warns against for people of my type (A). In the 2 months since buying the book I've dropped an astonishing 20 pounds, down from 190. I don't know how well it works for other people, and I really don't like the unscientific manner in which the information is presented, but my own results force me to begrudgingly give it 4 stars.

Summary: Eat Right 4 Your Type
Review: After reading all the reviews, I wanted to say something not previously mentioned. In describing the diseases Type A are prone to have, Dr. D'Adamo mentioned TB - but not in the lungs. Well, when I was younger, I had TB of the lymph glands. I was amazed when I read this, because who has heard of TB anywhere but the lungs? Anyway, that convinced me that he knew what he was talking about regarding blood types. I have followed the "diet" for 4 weeks about 80% of the time and have lost 9 pounds. I exercise religiously and feel great! It really works! I really appreciate this book and have shared the information with friends and co-workers.

Summary: INCREDIBLE
Review: I was a skeptic ar first, it took me 6 months of staring at the book before I actually read it cover to cover and did what it said. "I am a "A"" I really believe in the is system, I do exactly what the book says and I have had wonderful results. I have lost 32 pounds in 3 1/2 months and I have never felt and looked better then I have in 8 years. I have tried everything else, but this has been the key to my optimal health. Also, let me add my family is different blood types A and O, we all have no problem eating together and having a meal.

Try it you will not be disappointed.

PS: Also follow the work-out plan and you will lose weight better and feel better. I did not at first and my body slowed down on the weight loss.

Summary: The Potential of the Blood Type Diet
Review: I am usually quite skeptical about fad diets with cookie cutter claims that one diet works for everyone the same. This one is different and based on an individuality of a person's blood type. How ironic that medical science, which categorized the chemical variations in the blood into types had not designed studies with various foods and medications previously. I am impressed with Dr. D'Adamo's pioneering spirit and thankful that he wrote this book.

After reading some of other reviews, I feel that there is a valid point that Dr. D'Adamo did not explain in the book the way he tested the reactions of the individual blood types with foods. On the other hand, how many of us readily understand any laboratory testing in detail? The book was not written for a medical publication but for the average person. Further, the missing data does not invalidate the results. I have promoted "Eat Right 4 Your Type" since I read the book in 1997. Not only because it open my eyes to a healthier way of eating but because it also mention the types of exercises most beneficial for my blood type. Being an Type A, I always felt that vigorous workouts made me feel stressed and exhausted while calming exercises seemed energizing. My blood type B husband, a body builder and trainer, had always felt that he was weaker the next day after eating chicken. This book was a wonderful confirmation of what we had been witnessing. The reference to the personalities also corresponded well.

I had no real health problems when I began the diet so I have no amazing personal story but am always interested in preventing illness in the future. What really convinced me that the food lists in book were priceless was my friend who has had allergies and asthma all her life. In the book, I found that these ailments are common to blood type Os, which she is. She decided to try the diet for six weeks. During that time, she did not have one asthma attack -- a record for her. Her allergies? Well, she adopted a cat! To this day she is still free of those ailments and a little thinner as long as she adheres to the diet for the majority of her meals.

Another Type O friend with arthritis tried the diet and was not impressed that his pain was relieved. What really grabbed his attention that the diet worked was that he would have pain return within 30 minutes of eating a food that he should have avoided. Placebo? Maybe, but the placebo effect rarely works on babies. I have seen some breast fed babies that had seizures that doctors could not stop be completely free of this problem when their mothers stop eating foods on the babies' blood type avoid list. That has been very convincing for me.

I don't feel I need to know how Dr. D'Adamo developed the food lists nor how he did the testing, I am just glad he wrote the book to share his findings. I believe he has just unveiled a new undiscovered frontier with such potential that it could give us insight as to how to improve medications so they do not work better for each individual with less risk of side effects. Afterall, the book even had lists of beneficial herbs and teas per blood type that have medicinal value. The way I see it, medical science should begin to explore the blood type influences deeper and shame on them if they don't! In the meantime, I plan to purchase every book Dr. D'Adamo publishes.

Summary: Best diet book ever.
Review: This is an outstanding book - the best book on diets I have ever read. The diet works and it works wonders. Often "experts" and sceptical scientists attack something new - when it is apparent that they haven't tried it themselves. However, facts speak more loudly than close-minded opinions. I have been on the diet for 17 months and I have eliminated serious allergies and many migraines, eased joint pain in a damaged knee, improved my short-term memory, increased my resistance to colds and flu, reduced my need for sleep by 1 ½ hours per night and generally increased my available energy - all because I tried the diet and have stuck to it 99.99%. I suppose not every reader will see such a dramatic change. However, my son cured his "chronic fatigue syndrome" - which had not been cured by a dozen different doctors and therapies - by going on the diet. And I have introduced the diet to 25+ people who went on it, and all, except one, reported good results. The one who didn't report good results was an O type who kept cheating by having ice cream. So there you go. I have seen enough of this diet working well that I know that the attackers are mostly flat-earthers or frauds. Some observations about getting the most value from the book: 1) The diet isn't just about losing weight, though that is usually a side benefit. It is a way to increase health, fitness, and well being. 2) On looking at the book's food lists the losers say "Look at all the foods I can't eat" and turn away. The winners say "Look at all the foods that I can eat that are beneficial to me" and move forward to good eating and good health. 3) The book's food lists can be expanded by getting Shapiro's updated OK/AVOID food lists (found via D'Adamo's web site). I take them to the grocery store, especially for reading labels. I found it helpful to assemble all the beneficials on a single page, and then to grocery shop from that list first. Shapiro also has combined lists that are helpful for planning meals for mixed blood-type households. I suspect that some critics may be secretly benefiting from this diet, even as they publicly decry it for reasons of pocketbook or professional ego. And it isn't hard to figure out the food companies that stand to lose from increased awareness of the truth in this book. There will of course be criticism, perhaps some of it funded by junk food distributors. But find out for yourself. Get the book and try it. That's the best proof.

Summary: Unless you have tried it, you can't be a critic
Review: I am type O and have been following this lifestyle for about six months. I have experienced increased energy levels, a greater sense of well-being, and have also lost about 25 lbs.

Summary: Eat Right 4 Your Type
Review: This is an excellent book. It has helped me and many of my family and friends. I give this book away as a gift to others who have tried everything to diet and feel better. This isn't a new diet, it's a behavioral life change for high energy and overall wellness.

Summary: A refreshingly honest look at individuality and diet!
Review: Four blood types have evolved over human history: O (the hunter/gatherer), A (the farmer), B (the nomad)and AB (a more recent hybrid of the last two). Our ancestors populated the world and either brought their food with them or adapted to new food stuffs wherever they settled.

Certain tribes discovered optimal sources of protein and incorporated these foods into their traditions. O's stuck to meats, A's to grains, B's to dairy and the newer AB to a combination grains and dairy.

Only in the last century have we been affluent enough to have so many choices in what to eat, and we have paid dearly for them. For most of our history, we humans ate less, ate whole organic foods and led more physically active lives. The explosion of choices in our diet today are a result of modern culture and not our genetic adaption to the wider range of foods.

The genius in D'Adamo's theory is his acceptance that our ancestors generally were wise enough to adhere to those foods which worked best for their lineage, identified by blood type to a large extent. In a world where we can choose food from many sources, natural and manufactured, it's no wonder we are fraught with obesity, heart disease, cancer and fatigue, and many other ailments.

Furthermore, D'Adamo recognizes that each blood type is chemically unique. Eat the wrong source of protein and your blood cells will literally glue themselves to the molecules of the incompatible food and clog your calorie burning engine.

D'Adamo's theory breaks through the political agendas and cultural conventions that influence what we're taught to believe is right about diet and locks onto our genetic uniqueness, the basis of our metabolism and the potential for our optimal health.

I believe a day will come when our descendents recognize this and return to the wisdom the ancients discovered out of necessity, fewer, simpler, organic foods are the fuel the human body was designed to burn.

Summary: "Eat well and exercise" with yet another twist.
Review: Any book that inspires so many reviews and gets so many people thinking about their health deserves at least three stars. According to many of the reviews, the success of a diet book can be gauged on the number of pounds lost since reading it. I read Nutrition for Dummies about a year ago, lost 30 pounds and I feel great! How did I do it? I ate healthy foods, avoided unhealthy foods, and started exercising more. So what about all the popular diet books, including this one? In the words of a now famous and probably quite rich doctor, "Many of these (diet) books are full of bunk and hokum, with a lot of unnecessary rules and regulations." You'll find this on pg. 343 of this book in reference to diet books suggesting you combine certain foods for better digestion. Dr. D'Adamo instead feels that adherence to an extensive list of foods according to your blood type will enable you to avoid many viruses, lose weight, 'fight back' against cancer, heart disease, etc., and 'slow down' the aging process. I give this book three stars because I believe that following this diet will achieve exactly that. I give this book three stars because I also believe that any other book on nutrition will lead to the same results. You'll notice that all these books have the same hidden theme. Eat whole grains, lean meats, vegetables and fruits, beans, nuts; natural and unrefined foods. Avoid double bacon cheeseburgers, fries, milkshakes, Twinkies, ice cream, Snickers, cakes, potato chips, and hot dogs. Stop watching so much T.V. Get off of the couch and get some exercise. I know I'm getting carried away, but do you see the point? It doesn't take a Dr. to figure out how to improve the average American's health.

Keeping all this in mind, this is a brilliant book! It's too hard for the average American to follow a vague rule like "Eat well and exercise." It slowly slips your mind like all the other New Year Resolutions. Oh yeah, I'm going to do more romantic things for my wife this year. But hey, a shiny red and white book just came out! Everyone's talking about it! It's got a catchy title, a new twist, scientific sounding explanations, and every food I should eat is listed for me. What fun! It's just like a game. Now feeding your extended family on Thanksgiving is like one of the logic puzzles you used to do in grammar school.

You know what foods to eat but your old recipes are mixing them all up? No fear, Dr. D'Adamo has a cookbook for you to buy. What if you just want a snack after yoga, swimming, skateboarding, bunjee jumping, or whatever your blood type desires? No fear, Dr. D'Adamo has energy bars for you to buy, idealized for your blood type. I don't mean to imply that he's just trying to make a buck with a bunch of bunk, as other reviewers stated so eloquently. I believe that he believes in what he's saying. Unfortunately, his belief seems to have escalated to faith. Not once do I remember reading "This is somewhat controversial, many respected nutritionists disagree with me, further studies may show that I'm wrong, I may need to shuffle the foods around a bit when new information arrives." Instead, he makes many controversial statements as if they were commonly accepted. Where are all the little numbers after sentences that allow me to go look up the sources and confirm his statements for myself? Either he believes his diet cannot be improved upon or else Dr. D'Adamo falls into the same trap that snares many respected scientists in all disciplines. To sell a product you have to downplay the unanswered questions and lingering problems and pump up the 'new information', the 'new discoveries', the 'new truth.' I don't doubt that there's a connection between blood type and nutrition. No aspect of your body operates alone. It's all connected. That's the nature of a biological organism. Perhaps Dr. D'Adamo's theory is some basic first step towards next century's diet, an individualized diet based on your own DNA. Even so, like all modern science, it is incomplete and should be presented as such.

On pg. 38 lies the statement "Anytime you see a new diet plan that claims to work the same way for everyone, be skeptical." I think it's reasonable to state it more simply. Anytime you see a new diet plan, be skeptical. Should you read the book? Yes! Go down to the library, check it out and find out what your neighbour is talking about. Should you follow the diet? Feel free, just keep in mind a few things. Your type O ancestors were eating meat from animals that lived free lives, ate natural foods, drank from clean water and weren't standing around in their own manure or crammed into cages. And perhaps they had no choice since plant foods were scarce. You have a choice today. Find out where your food comes from. For a better book on what to eat, I highly recommend John Robbins, 'Diet for a New America.' And whether you decide to 'Eat Right 4 Your Type', or just to 'Eat Well and Exercise,' stick with it but don't take it all so seriously. What's the point of living to be 100 if you're not having any fun?
