Rating: Summary: a great book Review: My Brothe Sam Is Dead is a book about a family during the Revolutionary War. The narrator, Tim (a young boy) tells about his brother Sam who is in the Continental army. Tim tells about the family while life in this small town gets harder due to lack of food and supplies. This story describes the hardships of living during the Revolutionary War.
Rating: Summary: A good war book Review: This book is about the Revolutionary War and the Tories vs. the Patriots. It shows how the war affected family life, and the life of a small town. Tim Meeker's brother Sam is always fighting with their dad and one night gets kicked out and joins the Continental army to fight on the side of the Patriots. Tim, the younger son, is mainly home helping with the tavern. I recommend this book to other people who like to learn about war and how people were prejudiced during this time period. I liked this book because it was about war.
Rating: Summary: My Brother Sam Is Dead: Picking Sides Review: Tim is just a boy with a very bright future depending on his decisions right now in his life. There's only one problem, and it's a big one: the Revolutionary War has come along and Sam, Tim's brother, goes to fight for the Patriots and his father stays loyal to the king. Tim must decide which side he's on. The best parts in the book, I think, are the battles in the war. This was a good book, and that's why I gave it **** stars.
Rating: Summary: Good early American history book Review: My Brother Sam is Dead is about a boy named Sam and his family. Sam goes off to war and his father disagrees with him going to war to fight for things like liberty that he doesn't think are needed (Sam's father is a Loyalist). I liked this book a lot because it taught me a lot about the early American Revolutionary War. The book was never boring and I never wanted to throw it down to pick up a different one. Personally, I don't like to read, but this book makes me want to learn and read more about the early American Revolutionary war.
Rating: Summary: readable coming-of-age story set in the American Revolution Review: This book describes the fictional adventures of the Meeker family of Redding, Connecticut, though much of the context of the story -- including setting, characters and situations -- is true. The action takes place between April 1775 and February 1779. Tim Meeker begins as an 11-year old boy; his father runs the town's tavern and general store and remains loyal to the English king, while his beloved older brother Sam has just run off to join the Rebels and fight for freedom from the British. The narrative voice of Sam is effective and well-written. A lot of choices are made and many changes take place for anyone between the ages of eleven and fifteen, but just imagine if you were also going through those important times while the American Revolution was happening around you! Sam is confused. He doesn't understand all the issues and has seen acts of good and bad from both sides. He loves his father and his brother. He cannot decide where his loyalties lie. Sam's dilemma makes clear that the Revolution was really America's first civil war -- neighbors fought neighbors, people were right and wrong on both sides, and everyone suffered. This is a realistic book with no struggles or acts beyond the believable abilities of the characters involved. There is no explicit violence but the narrator sees a beheading and an execution, so this book would be inappropriate for young readers; but it captures the dilemmas of growing up and the difficulties of the Revolution in a way that would make it interesting and valuable to pre-teens and teenagers.
Rating: Summary: My Brother Sam is Dead-An 8th grader's veiw Review: This novel was a pretty good read. I would recommend it for readers 11 and above. Mild language is spread throughout the book. I was upset after reading about the horrors and brutality of the war, and so i believe thatit should not be read by children of a delicate age. Teenagers are most likely to enjoy this novel because of their relation to the character. I know that I could relate to Tim Meeker when he grumbled about his parents, brother, and chores. The plot is very attention-grabbing. It was definently a page turner. The novel's plot focuses mainly on Tim Meeker struggling to adapt to his life. He begins to mature after losing his father, and after his brother leaves for the war against his father's wishes.
Rating: Summary: Grrrrr-8 BOOK! Review: My Brother Sam is Dead is a gr-8 book to read. It tells you about the bad times and how younger brothers felt when they went to war! Its really gr-8 to actually feel what the people felt in the 1700's but it still is sad. And Just because it looks boring on the front doesnt mean it is!!! Trust me i should know!
