Rating: Summary: amazing book by amazing author Review: As a psychiatrist and son of a minister/college religion professor I have been making my way through Amazon.com's 100 best spiritual books of the century. When I showed the list to my father, he noticed that Yancy and this book were not on the list. He is right it should be, but will probably be on next centuries 100 best.In one way, Yancy did make last century's list, and proved he is worthy of the company, in that he wrote an eloquent forward and is editor of G.K. Chesterton's classic work "Orthodoxy" (#17 on the list). Yancy is not afraid to tell it like it is. He takes justified shots at the church, you, me and himself. At anyone who thinks they deserve or have earned all this good stuff in life. Charles Colson claims on the jacket cover that there is something in this book that is bound to make everyone mad. He is right. I am sick and tired of the ungrace in my life that became more apparent after reading this book. Amazing.
Rating: Summary: One of three books I'd pick if stranded on that desert isle Review: I've read the Bible and probably HUNDREDS of Bible studies, commentaries, inspirational works, etc. But Yancey's book showed me a facet of God's infinite love that I'd never fully understood. Grace is something we can never ever earn - it is God's gift to us. There is nothing we can do to make God love us less and there is nothing we can do to make God love us more. We are all honored guests at our Father's table. God has a place for each of us. I am the one Jesus (and God) loves. The cross and only the cross put to end for all time the law of eternal consequences. These are just a few of the pearls I've gleaned and readily remember from Yancey's wonderful book. This book is so rich and so filled with inspiration and insight, you can't read it all at one time. I'd read a few pages, think about it, read the same pages again, think some more, APPLY the truths to my life - saw results, read some more, thought about it some more...and on and on it went. GOSPEL means "good news" and Yancey's book "What's so amazing about Grace" is filled with good news. And it will change you and change your life and open your eyes to see just what a joy it is to be known as a child of God. It is all good news. By the way, my other two books - if I were stranded on a desert isle - would be [1]The Amplified Bible, [2]Science and Health with key to the Scriptures and [3]"What's so Amazing about Grace." Those three would keep me busy for a long time.
Rating: Summary: Everyone Needs to Read This Review: This could be one of the best "faith" books I have ever read. In a day and age where platitudes reign in sermons, Yancey is able to drill down into the core purpose of Christianity. His perspective on grace is refreshing, eye opening, and portrayed in way that entices you to want to learn more. One of my favorite excerpts which is the real premise of the book: Mark Twain used to talk about people who were "good in the worst sense of the word," a phrase that, for many, captures the reputation of Christians today. Recently, I have been asking a qustion of strangers when I strike up a conversation. "When I say the words 'evangelical Christian' what comes to mind?" In reply, mostly I hear political descriptions: of strident pro-life activists, or gay-rights opponents, or proposals for censoring the Internet. Not once - not once - have I heard a description redolent of grace. Apparently this is not the aroma Christians give off in the world. ...Yet somehow throughout history the church has managed to gain a reputation for its ungrace. As a little English girl prayer, "O God, make the bad people good and the good people nice." Great book and a must read.
Rating: Summary: Now meet Someone else. Review: By now, you've probably already met the Jesus you never knew. Now meet the God--the "Lovesick Father"--you never knew, either. You will never see God the same way again.
Rating: Summary: Good News about Grace Review: If you haven't read any of Yancey's work before, now is the time to start. This book is simply terrific! Yancey is clear, and direct, with no holds barred, about what it means to be saved by grace. You know what? It's simply a gift--a divine and amazing one. We didn't earn it. We didn't deserve it. We just got it. Yancey's book also challenges us to show grace, to break the chains of "ungrace" in our lives, and he uses a myriad of examples to show us how. Buy this book, and see what grace can do for you. And then buy The Jesus I Never Knew by Yancey too. You won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: Grace so amazing Review: I have read most of Yanceys books and I never fail to be challenged and affirmed. His views always seem to ring with my deep inner thoughts, things I could never put into words. I feel this writer has a real clear idea of what true Christianity is all about.
Rating: Summary: Finally, there's HOPE! Review: The message of the Christian gospel tends to get drowned out by a message of un-conditional, universal love. Thus, this book is important, because it presents the un-conditional grace as the potent force in Jesus' preaching. The book is deeply disturbing, challenging the way we tend to regard Christianity as the way of being perfect. Grace, given unconditionally, rocks the sense of justice among the "perfect", which is why I love this book. The book clearly points out the undertanding love is not sufficient but that the difficult term of "grace" is the only concept strong enough for a new start for hipocrite and murderer alike. Suggested reading for believers and non-believers alike.
Rating: Summary: Awesome book Review: This is one of the best books I have ever read. I am re-reading it because the content is so compelling. The Jesus I Never Knew is very good as well.
Rating: Summary: Readable! Review: Oftentimes, theological writers can get very dry. In this book, Yancey combines scripture with anecdotes. The seamless addition of his opinions makes this a very easy read. Our church did a book study, and we chose The Jesus I Never Knew as our next book since this one was so good for discussion!
Rating: Summary: What's so amazing about grace by Phillip Yancey Review: In this book Yancey argues that it is the gift of God's grace that most clearly distinguishes Christianity from other religions. The author skilfully explores the significance of grace within the Christian faith and its significance for a world full of 'ungrace'. This is a very readable book, full of insight and wisdom, that is as suitable for Christians who want to discover more of God as it is for non-Christians who want to understand the underlying basis of Christianity. Be warned, however, the book changed my own view of self and my relationship with God.....it may change your's !
