Summary: in my opinion it was phenominal
Review: I really liked this book. I am only 15, and found this book to be glued to my hand. The only downside was that 3/4 into the book the years skip by fastly. However, i still give it 5 stars. I laughed, and lord knows i cried. This book is definetly 1 of a kind!!!

Summary: Unbelievable
Review: I am not sure what some of the other folks reading this book were looking for, but I found "The Lovely Bones" to be one of the best books I have ever read. This book provides a perspective that people don't think about all of the time. The thoughts and ideas of those who have lost thier lives, staying and watching and hoping for those who are still living.....very well put together in this story. I have passed this book along to my parents and friends, and everyone has walked away from it, touched and changed. I would also like to add that everyone that I know read this book in its entirity under 24 hours! It's that wonderful!

Summary: Disappointing!
Review: I had never read Alice Sebold before, but I was very disappointed in this book. This book was very disturbing. There are so many horrific things going on in the real world and when you read, most of us would like to escape from all the "reality" of the world. The author I'm sure is a very good writer, but the ending of this book was rushed. I would not recommend this book to anyone, as a matter of fact I have told people not to read it.

Summary: I don't get it
Review: I got this book because I had heard such good reviews I couldn't wait to read it. Boy was I disappointed! When you read a book dealing with the death of a child you expect to read it with a box of kleenex in tow, but the character development was so poor I found myself not caring about any of the characters. You never get into the heads of any of them. The first 50 pages were a very fast read but then it goes on for another 250 where nothing much happens and the killer never gets caught. I had a hard time finishing it. It was an ok read but not anything I would recommend that's for sure.

Summary: Lovely Bones = Maudlin
Review: I am stumped, not only by the popularity of this book, but by numerous critics who have chosen it among the best of 2002. It is the most maudlin, contrived story I have ever read. Drivel. Amateurish. Poorly written. Cliched. Over-hyped. Stunted character development. Tripe. The book is memorable only because I have been trying so hard to forget it and get beyond my anger with myself for falling for the hype. I can't believe I made myself finish it. I have urged others not to begin.

Summary: I WAS DEPRESSED FOR A WEEK
Review: I am an avid reader, and so is my friend. We usually like the same books so when she told me this book was wonderful, I believed her. UGH. Well, let's see - in the first chapter the main character gets raped, and CHOPPED UP INTO PIECES. If you can handle books that are SEVERELY DEPRESSING than that's great for you. But I know I can't.
When I read a book I tend to get into the mood of the book. I really feel for the characters. My mother was constantly asking me if I felt all right - because I was wandering around the house moping. Well, I guess it's because I'm sensitive - but I was constantly crying for Susie - I couldn't help it!
I guess I can understand how some people enjoyed it - it was touching - but I still can't see how it got all of that praise! But for the people who are like me - and are sad when the characters are sad - AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
And for those of you who aren't really affected by these things then what can I tell you - read it. You might be one of the few that enjoy it. Well I guess you either love it or you don't. (And I think I made it apparent that I don't)
I Hope I helped!

Summary: Engrossing
Review: I am only 2/3 of the way through with this book. Unless the ending turns out to be really disappointing, I have to say it is one of the best books I have ever read. It's not exactly a literary masterpiece, but it is well-written, and it is a touching story. It will not appeal to non-sentimental readers, but it made ME cry at several points (esp. when Susie described the night of her murder, how her family was going on with their lambchop dinner and wondering where she was...I actually felt homesick!)

This is a terrific book, the kind of book that is so good it actually makes you look forward to riding the NYC subway at rush hour just to get a chance to read it.

Summary: Wonderful

Summary: Great therapy, poor fiction
Review: Disappointing to see a fine idea drowned in sentiment. The book unfortunately perpetuates the false dream of the victim i.e., all future life is related to the point of trauma. The sad and yet comforting reality is that the world moves on for everyone related to tragedy including, if not especially, the direct victim. In the opening chapter the author is divided into at least three separate entities. There is the innocent girl who dies tarnished but remains pure in heaven. There is the dippy clairvoyant who though unrelated sees the ghost of innocence in everything. Then there is the pragmatic overachieving sister who is able to find a place to put the tragedy in order to allow her to keep moving forward.

It would be trite to say that these are all aspects of the author's personality in dealing with her own terible trauma, but as she herself has chosen to record the event, I think it must be considered as a reference in this fiction.

It may have been a rewarding and worthy experience writing this book, but reading it was just a little Oprah for my tastes. Child molestation, rape and murder are repugnant acts that cannot be made easier to stomach because someone's sister marries a nice boy. It seems a distinctly American idea that tragedy is only truly defeated by happiness. In Europe and, perhaps even more, in Israel we understand that tragedy and happiness are not dependent on each other for validation. They are not inversely proportional. Tragedy and happiness co-exist - a tough reality not represented in this simplified fiction.
