Rating: Summary: Amazing Point of View Review: Thoroughly enjoyable book - told from the perspective a young girl who speaks to us from heaven. The perspective she gives as the world she knew deals with her death and searches for her killer is such a unique turn on the murder mystery.
Rating: Summary: I fell for it too! Review: Well, I fell for all the hype too! The first 20 pages of the book may have made me think that it might be a good read.....it was just a slow, sad story!! I can not understand why this book got so many good reviews!!! A big disappointment!!!
Rating: Summary: Unique Concept Review: I give this first fictional novel by Aice Sebold 5 stars simply because the concept is so unique. She has her own literary style, which I enjoyed, and the storyline is fascinating. I won't give a book description as that has been done several times but suffice to say a nice effort by this author.
Rating: Summary: Ok, to a point Review: I thought this book was entertaining up to the point where Number 5 is spotted by the killer. After that it went downhill and was completely boring. And the Ruth-Suzy exchange... that was the last straw..give me a break!
Rating: Summary: Definitely Different...... Review: First, I must say that I loved this book. It was most certainly a style of writing that took some "getting used to," as it is different from anything I've ever read before (I'm not usually one to read such a genre.) However, because of all the advertisements and "hype", (to use the word that other reviewers have used), I felt I must at least give it a chance. It was one of the best chances I have ever taken on a book. Sebold's writing style does seem somewhat "amateurish," but this has to be considered: it is written through the eyes of a fourteen year old girl. If it were more complex and adult, it wouldn't have been "believable" at all. As it is, I couldn't put the book down...and I suppose that's a very good thing. So, in conclusion, this book is beautifully written. It has poetry, which is important to me, and it draws you in to the characters like so few books can. It evokes feelings...it can make you happy and then instantly make you want to cry. And, if gone into with an open mind, I think anyone can enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: wouldn't recommend Review: All I can say is it's very slow. The few parts it where it starts to get interesting, comes to an abrupt halt. It's defenitly not an exciting page turner.
Rating: Summary: Ruined by an ending Review: The Lovely Bones is a novel with great ambition. With so many in the world fearful of death, the novel gives many people the hope that heaven is not a place where we stop growing, it is just a place we go to continue our learning process. And, if this were all this story were about, it would be much easier to swallow. However, the author attempts to make the story too universal and it sinks.I personally found Susie Salmon to be a wonderful main character. The development of each of the other main characters is well thought out, and the way the author delves into the psyche of the grieving is amazing. I felt compassion for the father, admiration for Lindsey, and hope for the future with Buckely. Though I am not really sure I liked the mother character very much, I felt she was justified in her desire to escape the death of her daughter. But that is were my admiration ends. I am still confounded about the author's need to have an "in-body" experience with Ruth. The sex scene between Ray and Susie was uncalled for, and personally I found it rather unnecessary. I felt the author was making a point that people whom have not had sex cannot go on to the next stage of salvation. I also did not understand why the character of Ruth was not furious at Ray for the use of her body when she was not consenting. Overall, I believe that Sebold is a talented writer. She paints a lovely portrait of people and how life affects the way we look at everything that comes next. However, the ending to the novel is too absurd to overlook and the lack of communication between both the writer and the reader is hard to miss. Also, the quick death of Mr. Harvey is very convenient and too quick a resolution. I look forward to reading Sebold's next novel; I just hope she thinks more about her plot line choices before she finishes the book.
Rating: Summary: Like a cheap Hollywood tearjerker Review: On a trip to Vancouver I learned about this book during a CBC book review program, called HotType. The story is about a young girl, brutally murdered, witnessing her family coping with the reality of her death from her personal heaven and magically revealing herself to some people from time to time. The story lingers, and lingers, and it suddenly struck me that the book was exactly like one of these cheap hollywood tearjerkers, the one's that give Hollywood it's name for bad taste and need for special effects (read: girl in heaven revealing herself etc etc - drama - blah blah - etc.). If you like this type of hollywood film, this book might be for you. If you like literature: skip it.
Rating: Summary: Recommend, with reservations Review: This book is just okay. I finished it in two sittings just so I could be free to move on to something more stimulating. If you enjoy tears, sappiness, and emotion-fests in general, by all means read this book. This book is definitely in the teen-girl fiction school of pop psychology. If you want two dimensional characters and supernatural smarm, look no further. There are some redeeming qualities: Harvey is a creepy and well-drawn force. Also, Sebold's idea that there is not a strict separation between the living and the dead is pretty profound and worth more consideration.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put the book down.. Review: Me and my mother both read this novel and we both finished it in less that a week. We both loved it! This book is great! How can you not enjoy this book? It has such a unique perspective and it's very well written! This book is truley a page turner - if you havn't read it, read it!!
