Rating: Summary: * * * * 1/2 stars - truly a memorable book Review: I was left speechless by this book. I am not giving it 5 stars, I rarely do, but this book brought to me that wonderful, gentle, loving sadness that would have made me cry, was I the crying type. Read it.
Rating: Summary: Good but a bit grisly for me... Review: This book has a terrific plot. It is about young Susie Salmon dying and going to heaven. Unfortuantely, she dies on account she was raped and murdered. Aside from that grisly part in the beginning, this book is a good read. The way Sebold gives life to her charcters is great, though the mother seemed a bit unrealistic and too dramatic. If you can stand constant sex scenes and mention of rape, this is a good book to read.
Rating: Summary: ***A Gem Of A Book*** Review: I picked this up when it first came out, not having read reviews on it. It immediately sounded good from the dust jacket, so I soon began.... My, this is very touching. How often do you read a book where the main character is in Heaven, telling her version of the events that got her there? This book engages you from the beginning & does not let go. You feel a variety of emotions throughout. The ending gives the book a nice finish as well. I simply loved it.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Creative take on Life and Death Review: I just finished reading Lovely Bones and found myself moved to tears throughout. What a refreshing and original take on life and the grieving process from the deceased protagonist's perspective. I lost my brother nearly four years ago and found myself continually thinking about that loss, not only from my own individual perspective, but also from my parents and also more profoundly, from my brother's perspective. This book offers insight into the personal experience of death by each character. This book tells a truly beautiful story about the strength of life after death, for both the living and the dead.
Rating: Summary: A waste of time Review: The book would have been perfect if it ended at the first chapter. The concept of the story is good but was poorly writen. The story went on and on and on... then ended. A good idea gone bad.
Rating: Summary: i thought it was ok Review: the book wasn't the greatest. it could have been better. it was kind of boring.
Rating: Summary: A new vantage point on grief and recovery... Review: Although this book yanks on your heart strings, it honestly is a wonderful read. You truly feel the pain of the characters, as if you were one of them. It is by feeling this pain that you can also feel their small joys, and experience the grieving process. Be warned, the novel is as depressing as you would imagine (14-year old girl raped, butchered, etc)... but the events cause you to become emotionally invested in the book. A rare pleasure."Grief knits two hearts in closer bonds than happiness ever can; and common sufferings are far stronger links than common joys." -Alphonse de Lamartine.
Rating: Summary: Great read Review: I read this when I first lived on my own in a new city. I was on edge for quite awhile afterwards! Touching and interesting.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down!!! Review: I don't mean to sound like I live under a rock, but I had never heard of this book or this author before my trip to Barnes and Noble one day. I went with friends and saw that this book was 20% off and was a #1 National Bestseller so I decided to get it. Well, less than two days later - I finished the book and was profoundly affected. I knew nothing about the book before I started reading - I didn't even read the liner notes. I just took the plunge and started reading and got completely sucked in to the story and the characters. In my own suburbia, we have an Indian family just like the Singhs. A mother, son and father (I've never seen the father). I felt like I knew Susie, Lindsey and Buckley. I wanted to go over to their house and be friends with them, comfort them, tease Susie about Ray and Lindsey about Sam. This book had me bawling in parts and trust me, I'm not that kind of person. I don't cry at books unless they suck me in and I can imagine that I'm part of the character's lives. After reading all of the reviews on this book and seeing that a lot of people put this book in the category of "overrated" or "boring" or "too depressing", I just have to laugh. The book has received four out of five stars and was reviewed 1887 times, so clearly this is not the consensus about the book. I say - give it a try. This is one of my favorite books of all time - right up there with Where The Red Fern Grows, Bridge to Teribithia and To Kill A Mockingbird.
Rating: Summary: Totally inappropriate for teens !!! Review: This book starts with a sickly suggestive and accurate description of a rape and a murder. I can say that the rape was too close to home for me... as I was raped as a teen... and spent years dealing with my fear of men... Several weeks ago my lovely adopted daughter began to act out and have severe mood swings, lack of sleep, snuck out after midnight, totalled my car, tried to run away, and even told the police that found her that she had been attacked by me! Then I find my own adopted teenaged daugther, who had been raped as a toddler by her father, had been assigned this sick and totally inappropriate book by her English teacher. She has been haunted by only half understood memories... dredged up by this perverted book... and now she has to write a term paper on this disgusting book. Please don't buy it, or give it to teens to read.
