Rating: Summary: Not as good as it's made out to be Review: Interesting story. Once you get past the first 15 pages (which are the hardest) the novel slows down at some parts. The miracle that takes place at the end with Ray is a little weird and was the major bump in the road. Good look at what people go through when a loved one dies, but it wasn't as good as its hype
Rating: Summary: A Complete Let Down... Review: I agree that the book seemed a bit creepy, being that it's written from the perspective of the dead. The beginning chapters seemed to lead to no where. Several chapters into the book, the pace picked up but Alice Sebold lost me with a scene on spiritual possession. The ending presented no sense of closure. As the reader, you are left asking, is that it??? It ends there??? What a complete utter disappointment!
Rating: Summary: The Lovely Bones Review: The Lovely Bones is a phenomenal book. I absolutely loved it. But to tell you the truth I wish I had waited until I was a little bit older before I read it. This book made me feel a lot of mixed emotions but the strongest emotion I felt throughout the whole book was fear. First it made me think a lot more about life. It made me think about how important I it is to live your life to the fullest everyday and not take for granted what you have because... tomorrow isn't always promised. That's the part that frightens me it made me think a whole lot more about death. I realized that I should never go to sleep mad at anyone for the sheer fact that he or she or I myself may not be there the next day. These questions came to mind when I finished the book and truly thought about it. How will I die? Could this happen to me? When is my time? When I go is it really the end or will I be able to watch over my family and loved ones from the heavens above just as Susie did throughout the book? In all honesty, this book was amazing every detail kept me hooked. I couldn't put it down I would read until I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore. I just think that people shouldn't read this book until they're ready to face the true and very harsh realities of death and loss. Until they are ready to breath in a fresh breath of the real world and be ready to grasp the concept that death will come...Are you ready? [...]
Rating: Summary: The Lovely Bones-A Bone Chiller Review: When we first dive into The Lovely Bones, Susie Salmon is exploring Heaven. She's a 14-year old girl who was lured into a neighbor's "hide-out," only to become the victim of rape and murder. Her days in Heaven are pleasant, just pleasant, and she finds herself, more than ever, wanting to be back home with the people she loves most on Earth. Gazing down at life continuing without her, she watches her parents' marriage crumbling, her sister closing herself off from everything beyond her bedroom door, her younger brother trying to comprehend his sister's absence, her crush finding another girl, and her killer covering his tracks. But at the same time, she knows that life must go on, and Time heals. She has to accept her new life in Heaven, which looks a lot like where she lived when she was alive. Only now, her life is no longer in her control. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold will pry into the deepest crevices of your soul: healing, joy, growth, and understanding. Be prepared for words that speak of reality. Nothing is sugar-coated. Not only is it an enlightening "before-bed" story, but it holds something we can all learn from.
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: I agree with others here...this was a wonderful book, but I must say that I was a little disappointed by the ending. It seemed like Sebold just wanted to wrap it up. Overall though, I loved it!
Rating: Summary: Okay...I guess... Review: The first few chapters are interesting, but soon I found myself skipping past chapters to learn more about the murderer, who I thought was one of the more interesting characters in the novel. The novel's text is simplistic, tasteful (nothing so incredibly graphic) and somewhat realistic. But the whole heaven idea...it's been done. The heaven in the novel is an incredibly cliched version... And the writer had such an interesting and imaginative veiwpoint..why couldn't she use the same effort to create a new veiw of 'heaven'?
Rating: Summary: Lovely Bones came from Heaven Review: This is a GREAT book. I was touched by it from the very first chapter. I couldn't believe it! I found a book that reached out and grabbed me and pulled me in- so much that I did NOT put this book down! It is wonderful! The description of heaven is so believable, I read it over and over with tears falling down my cheek. I highly recommend this book to any girl over the age of 16. It is a wonderful book and you won't regret it!
Rating: Summary: A View From Heaven Review: First off, I loved every second of this book. The details that Alice Sebold gives from this little girls view from Heaven was so great. The mental images were spectacular. The characters are very well played out and you start to actually become part of them. Very touching story. If you love tear jerkers & a serious tone with a little laughter definetly purchase this book.
Rating: Summary: A well written story of a young girls spirit after death Review: New and interesting look at death, told by a young girl who is murdered by her neighbor, and ethereally hangs around afterward to watch after her parents and friends. Unable to communicate, she watches as they suffer the after effects of loosing her, and watches as her killer goes unpunished. We follow Susie, as she follows them, and tells us of her regrets, things she wishes she had done in life, and what she wishes for her parents and friends in their lives without her. Only four stars instead of five, because toward the ending Ms. Sebold let the "fantasy" part of this book slip a little too far. I enjoyed the story as Susie told it from her afterlife, but when she ventures briefly back into this world, I felt the reasoning was off and the concept unacceptable and a bit silly. All in all, a pretty good book, worthy of four stars.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: I really enjoyed this book. It was well-written and an excellent story. It kept my attention and at times made me laugh and cry. I've heard a lot of people mention that it is very depressing. While I found the first two chapters or so to be pretty sad, the book really picked up after that. As a whole, I thought it gave a pretty positive outlook on death and life after death. The point of view of the main character (Susie) was very well written. I was a bit disappointed in the ending, but I will not go into details of why in order to keep from spoiling the plot. The reason why I didn't give the book 5 stars is because I reserve that rating for only the very best books. While I completed the book quickly, it wasn't one that I couldn't put down. I also didn't think that the hype 100% matched the quality of the book. I'm glad I got my hands on a copy...I would suggest reading it. Enjoy!
