Rating: Summary: The Lovely Bones - Lovely Heartbreak Review: I have always been a fan of books that hook you within the first few pages, and this book layed brutal hooks in me right away. The novel's lead character and narrator, Susie Salmon, is already dead when readers are first introduced to her. Susie is raped and killed by her neighbor, George Harvey, who we later get to know on a deeper level. The novel explores what the afterlife may be like, and the many different levels of grief that people go through to find the strenghth to move on. As readers we see through Susie's eyes and feel the pain of losing those we love. We watch Susie's little sister, Lindsay mature, her mother grow distant, her father's obsession with finding her killer, and her little brother Buckley attempting to understand death. Who knew the such a painful subject would make to be a great work of insprational fiction? This is one of the best books I have read yet.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book? I beg to differ Review: I personally did not like this book. Everyone said it was great, so I checked it out from the "teen-kids" section. I think it belongs in the adult section of the library. It rambled on and on and was too slowly paced. I felt the author included too many irrelevant things in the story and it was too graphic. Even so, I liked the author's depiction of heaven and what went on. The ending was a little bit of a letdown, as well.
Rating: Summary: The Best Book; The Lovely Bones Review: If anyone wanted to read a good book, I'd suggest reading The Lovely Bones. I'm not one for picking up a book for the fun of it, but this book got me hooked. It's written well and is easy to understand. There are no long drawn out situations, it's not boring and has a great ending. This book is about Susie Salmon and how she was murdered. She tells you her story from Heaven. It's a very interesting book and a lot of people will enjoy it. Susie tells how her family deals with their loss, how her friends deal with it. Susie tells you here memories on Earth and which ones she wants to relive. If you were to go pick up a book right now, I'd say go get this one.
Rating: Summary: "The Lovely Bones" is a lovely book! Review: The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold is perhaps one of the greatest books I have ever read. Susie Salmon ("like the fish") is a 14-year-old girl who was raped and murdered by her deranged neighbor, Mr. Harvey. The way Sebold describes this horrid event is honest and a bit alarming but never offensive. The whole story is written with an air of innocence. She tells her story from her gazebo in Heaven. This is what gives this novel such an interesting twist. Heaven, as depicted in this book, is a place where you are given your most desired dreams. Susie takes you into the lives of her family and into the lives of Ray Singh and Ruth Connors. Ray Singh was the first and only boy Susie had kissed and Ruth is the girl who was deeply affected after Susie accidentally grazed her on her way up to Heaven. You almost feel like you've become part of this family as you read. Unlike many novels, I became hooked after the first few paragraphs. It is funny, surprising, a bit sad, and full of hope. The Lovely Bones is a must read book.
Rating: Summary: Lovely Bones Review: This book had a good message, in the end. I would not recommend this book to anyone who cannot handle slightly disgusting situations. At the very beginning, the main character has some troubles, and the author describes it in gruesome detail. There are also some parts which are very risque. However, at the end of the book I was happy for the character and her family. Throughout most of the book, I was either sad for the situation or literally "grossed-out". This was quite a depressing read actually, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who couldn't handle it (if you know what I mean). This was not one of my favorites. I hope my review has been helpful!
Rating: Summary: Incredible Review: It is very rare that I find a novel worthy of such praise. Seybold did a spectacular job in making her work complete; after reading the entire book I felt as if I knew everything that there was to know regarding the story, and was perfectly content with how the story progressed and ended. It was positively beautiful and satisfying. The story is about a young girl who is brutally raped and then murdered. As she looks down from her heaven, she watches her sister and brother and parents adapt to the earth-shattering change that has plummeted into the ocean of their lives...with never ending ripples. I read this book when I was in Little Cayman with my family. As I was lying in a hammock, person after person came up to me, talking about the book and how wondeful it was. Wonderful, amazing, and thought-provoking, Seybold has certainly created a winner.
Rating: Summary: The Lovely Bones Review: In the inspiring novel The Lovely bones by Alice Sebold, she starts off by having her narrator Susie Salmon say "I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6,1973". Susie Salomon was walking home from school one day in the cornfield, when her neighbor Mr. Harvey calls her into his hiding place and kills her. Throughout the novel she is telling her story of what happened to her when she was alive, along with what's happening with her family and friends while she is looking at them from heaven. After her death her parents begin to drift apart, while her sister goes through her teenage years and her brother deals with the fact his older sister is not coming back. Her dad isolates himself away while tring to figure out who Susie's killer is, while her mother eventually leaves the family. In the story we learn that Mr.Harvey is a serial killer, and he moves out if town without even getting caught. This novel in my opinion was the beast book I have ever read. I thought it was very touching story of courage, hope, and love.
Rating: Summary: Fantasy for those who don't usually read fantasy Review: A girl dies and is taken to a magical world where she learns to deal with her Earth-bound life. Although a novel concept for a mainstream book, a person who reads fantasy may find road all too well travelled. For that reason and others, I did not find this book as remarkable as the rest of the world seems to have found it.
Rating: Summary: Love it or hate it! Review: This book has circulated Juneau, Alaska this past year, and I read it on the recommendation of a friend who couldn't put it down. Me? I had a very difficult time wading through it! I just couldn't get into it . . . didn't like the story line . . . and didn't like the concepts the book was dealing with. After talking with several people who read it, we've learned it's one of those books a person either loves or hates.
Rating: Summary: New Point of View -- Appeals to Typical "Chick" Book Readers Review: The Lovely Bones was a terrific opportunity to see a story from many dimensions. Each character was well defined (rare for such a short story,) the plot was believable, and you'll feel that you want to keep reading. In a strange way, it will be very uplifting for someone who has experienced a tragedy in their life -- particularly a death. It provides a way to think about the afterlife that is enjoyable and calming. If you like typical "chick" books, this one was a page-turner.
