Rating: Summary: Graphic and Grippping...you cannot put it down Review: You wonder what kind of person it takes to write a tale such as this one, but then you read about Alice Seabold, and you understand. The imagination and details that this book gives makes you feel as if you are sucked into the world watching it from heaven as the main character does. I felt as if I was screaming with her when that safe fell into the sink whole, I wanted to shake the people in the book and tell them to realize what is right in front of them. That is the sign of a truly wonderful book!!
Rating: Summary: Good book - strange parts Review: I really liked this book. I had a hard time putting the book down at first but then the story took a weird turn and I felt like it ruined it. The soul swapping and love making part made the story lose its affect for me.
Rating: Summary: I Thought it Would be Better Review: I suppose I entered into reading this book with high expectations. After all, it was all over the TV and media as a wonderful and unique novel. At first, during the description of the murder and its immediate after effects, I was very intrigued. But towards the middle of the book, I began to feel let down. This is it??? The end of the book had a very unrealistic flare that made it seem "written to be made into a movie." Too bad. It had potential. Also, if you pick it up thinking it will give an entirely new and wonderful idea of what heaven is....then, you may be disappointed. Nothing really enlightening to me.
Rating: Summary: Superb, sad,and satisfying Review: Alice Sebold carries the story forward - seeing the aftermath of death on the mourners, as told by the deceased. A combination of reality and spirituality, I could see people I know and I could see myself. This different view of mourners follows their actions while exposing the thoughts behind them, and they could be any of us. a fantastic book.
Rating: Summary: A very very very good book Review: The Lovely Bones was a book I had to read as a classroom assignment. As I began to read the book I got drawn in by the descriptive language that was used. I think this was the best 328 pgs. that Ive ever read.
Rating: Summary: I was bummed after all the great reviews Review: This was the 1st book that my book club read. I wasn't too excited from the description (especially with all the heaven mumbo-jumbo) but after reading all the raving reviews i felt I should give it a chance. I must say I was very disappointed. The author was not able to caaptivate me from the start but I kept reading. I have to say that this book is at the bottom of the barrel for novels i have read. I felt that there was no climax or significant character development. The interaction between the characters was not convincing either. Don't believe everything you read about this book. I want to make one thing clear. My reasons for not liking it were not actually related to the heaven perspective of the novel. I was willing to accept that I just think it was poorly written and the story poorly developed. I don't want to crush anyones reading desires so if you want to read it go ahead, some people have liked it so you may like it. However, if you asked for my personal opinion I would say leave it on the bookshelf and grab something else. I would have given it less than one star but that was not an option.
Rating: Summary: What a scary thought! Review: I have not read all of "The Lovely Bones" yet but what I have read so far I love. It is very interesting and it gets your attention. To think that my parents would go a couple days with out knowing where my body was or if I was even dead would be a very scary thought. For now on I will watch my brothers and sisters when I let them out. Usually I just let them go and tell them to check in but now I will keep an eye out for them. The murderer being their next door neighbor is even a freakier thought. If I had to take a second thought of one of my neighbrs like that I would not even think about talking to them oro even going to their house.
Rating: Summary: I'm in 'book mourning' Review: Book mourning: (noun) That particular period of time after the completion of a book where you wish it hadn't ended but you're glad it has because you need time to digest what you've just finished.I had heard about the "hype" surrounding the book before finally picking it up. I was skeptic, as rarely do books live up to the media and popular attention surrounding them. However I was refreshingly surprised at this page-turner of a book. We meet Susie Salmon as she's living in Heaven after being brutally raped and murdered by a neighbor. Through her eyes we follow her family and her friends, some of whom become friends only after her death, as they deal with the grief and loss of the murdered girl. We watch her sister and brother grow up, her father turn frail, and her mother.. make choices none of us should judge in her grief. But most amazing to me were the final few pages, the last few chapters that make me hope in a small way that Ms. Sebold's heaven can be my own. The miracle of Ray and Ruth's gift will stay with you longer than many of the other virtues of this book. And you will want to check in on Lindsey and Buck years from now to see how this incident has shaped their lives. I understand the media blitz and the attention that was paid to this book. For once the media spot-lighted a book worth of the attention. I'll be passing this book on to others who I think need to learn the lessons presented between these pages. And be sure to prepare to mourn the end of this book. You'll feel bereft when you finish, but it's a good sort of loss.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: This book started out with an interesting premise. I had high hopes, but the story was shallow, incomplete and hard to believe . Comments on the book's jacket described it in part as "funny". I didn't see anything even remotely funny here. I finished it only for the payoff at the end, but there was none. This book didn't deliver. I wouldn't suggest you waste your time.
Rating: Summary: Beyond words... Review: Reading "The Lovely Bones" was a journey for me. Maybe it was because I read it in only a few days, or maybe it was because I threw myself into the poetic narration of a 14-year-old. Whatever the reason, despite the dark undertones of the novel, I fell in love with this book immediately. Although Susie's story is tough to swallow, her poignant descriptions of heaven and of her family were enough to make me want more. I appreciated Sebold's attempt at describing what heaven might be like...the comfort of it, not necessarily the safety. Many may find the premise of the story too difficult to get past. But I promise that once you accept Susie's fate, you will appreciate the rest.
