Rating: Summary: 'THE LOVELY BONES' Review: By now most people already know what 'THE LOVELY BONES' is about as it has been talked about to no end on various talk shows and been at the top of the bestseller list for almost the entire summer, so there is no need for me to give a synopsis of the plot in this review, it would probably be redundant. I, instead, would like to give you my opinion on this remarkably different book and comment on what others have said in their reviews. I have noticed that while most people thoroughly enjoyed this book there are many people who called it sad and depressing. I guess that is in the eye of the beholder because I found it to be quite the opposite. I thought the story of Susie Salmon was a hopeful story about how life goes on after a loved one dies and the simple joys that we sometimes take for granted. I loved watching Lindsey, while trying to cope with her sisters death, try to start a life of her own and experience the things every teenager does such as her first kiss and starting high school. I also enjoyed watching her parents try to find a way to cope with the loss of their daughter in their own separate ways, it gives you hope. I thought Grandma Lynn was absolutely wonderful! When she arrived it was like a breath of fresh air and helped everyone to forget even if for only a little while. One of my favorite parts of this book was when Grandma Lynn first came to visit and gave Abigail and Lindsey makeovers at the kitchen table; it literally put a smile on my face. There are plenty of other parts of 'THE LOVELY BONES' that I found to be heartwarming but I don't want to give the whole book away :). In no way did I find 'THE LOVELY BONES' to be depressing, of course there are moments that are sad but mostly, in my opinion, as I said, it was truely hopeful.
Rating: Summary: Unique Presentation Review: Though no book is perfect, and this one is no exception to that, I enjoyed the way Alice Sebold put the whole story inside the framework of a fantasy, beginning it in heaven. That's what makes "The Lovely Bones" unique. The only other book I read that does that is "West Point..." by Norman Thomas Remick which, take it for what it's worth, I also recommend. But, don't just go by what I say. Get the books. You won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: The Lovely Bones: A Novel Review: What a touching story! I couldn't put it down.
Rating: Summary: Read it! Review: If there is one book out there to read, this may well be the one, for it will pull you through a range of emotions that most books can only hope to.
Rating: Summary: Better than I expected Review: I was reluctant to read this book, given the premise, but I was hooked right away, from the first paragraph and finished it in less than two days. I couldn't put it down. While there were a couple of spots where it was hard to suspend disbelief, for the most part I found the book touching, and sometimes painful. It was wonderfully written and I found that the characters were people I could care about. I think this is a really wonderful book.
Rating: Summary: BONES ARE LOVELY Review: WHEN I FIRST STARTED READING THIS BOOK I WAS DREADING IT,i THOUGHT IT WOULD BE VERY MORBID. AS I READ, I BECAME VERY INTERESTED IN WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. WAS THE BODY EVER GOING TO BE LOCATED? WAS ANY OTHER CHARACTER GOING TO BE MURDERED.WAS THE FAMILY GOING TO REMAIN A FAMILY? HOW FAR INTO THE LIFE OF THE SALMON FAMILY WAS THE BOOK GOING? I LOVED THE GRANDMOTHER CHARACTER, SHE WAS REAL . ALSO , I LIKED MRS SINGH SHE WAS TRUTHFUL
Rating: Summary: The View From Heaven Review: Although the subject matter of this book is hard to take (the murder of a child), Sebold does an incredible job of creating a Heaven where the deceased are still an active part of the living. This book was beautifully written and very creative in its approach to the afterlife.
Rating: Summary: A modern day tragedy Review: This book hits so close to home when you think of the disappearance of so many young girls in the headlines. It's a parents worst fear come true. I was hooked immediately even though the book was just incredibly sad I couldn't tear myself away and stayed up teary eyed until 1 AM to read it in one sitting. The story, the characters, the situation(s) were all compelling and developed with such detail it makes your heart ache. The only reason I don't give it Five Stars is that the subject matter is so hard to deal with and although I found some solace, overall it didn't leave me feeing better at the end. I highly recommend the book if you want/need the outlet that reading a modern day tragedy will bring.
Rating: Summary: The Lovely Bones is an interesting tale told from an even mo Review: The novel, unlike most stories that focuses around a murder, begins with the murder scene with a chillingly vivid description of the act. Our story is then told from the eyes of the victim watching down on Earth from her heaven. Susie Salmon, "like the fish," is a girl left perpetually 14, her age at her time of death. Her tail is beautifully told. Her voice, sometimes sounding so young and childish, sometimes wise beyond her years, is typical of her age and ads depth to her character. The story is suspenseful, enthralling and atypical of a novel involving a murder in that the killer is revealed within the first few pages of the book to the reader but not to the characters. The story is a beautiful commentary on growing up and grief. The author breaches many touchy subjects such as teenage sexuality, religion, belief in the afterlife and the supernatural with gentle hand. Expertly written and a must read.
Rating: Summary: Descriptive Bones Review: I liked this book because Alice has an unbelievable way of showing not telling. She is incredibly descriptive about all the surroundings and or persons in this book. A great author in general. However, I didn't like this book because it had no closure. The only one with some closure was the victim herself. Sad read, I like to be uplifted a bit when I entertain myself. I wanted to see some peace out of this situation and saw none. Good read but not Great. Salute.
