Rating: Summary: Nice, but needed more research and character development Review: I just finished reading the book. It's nice, but I can't say I was as thrilled as I am with each and any Harry Potter book. The book should be fatter! More character development needed - as it is, most characters (especially the villains) are cartoonish and flat. Or was it intended as a parody on Russian Mafya books? Also, the use of Russian and pseudo-Russian words is laughable. "Irlandskii" means "Irish", but it's an adjective that can't be used in regard to a person to describe nationality. That would be "Irlandetz". "Khuligany" doesn't mean "enforcerers", it means punks, street bullies. They are scary to a woman on a dark street, but can't be Mafia! "Zdravstvuyte" is a wrong from to use between a father and a son - that would be "zdravstvuy". And so on and so force. (Russian is my mother tongue, so I know what I'm talking about).
Rating: Summary: Depth is in the eye of the beholder Review: Mom and Dad loved it, as we loved the first book. Action, adventure, fantasy, humor....what's not to like. Both the Fowl books are written with fast moving plots and many view points that keep it interesting on several levels. Our 12 year old son liked it too, however, not as much as he loved the first. He didn't like to see another side of Artemis, beyond a 12 year old (13 this book) egocentric criminal genius. Character depth is in the eye of the beholder.
Rating: Summary: "Die Hard with Fairies": Kids will give it 6 stars, moms 4 Review: ...so it averages out to 5. I have never seen my 8-year-old burn through a book like this one. I handed it to him as we were about to get on a 10-hour plane ride and he read it, non-stop, and finished it as we landed. He firmly believes it is the most exciting book he ever read. The fairies have the neatest space-age technology, if U r a kid you will instantly want a fairy helmet that makes you invisible to humans, and a set of nuclear-powered wings, for your birthday. Every page is SOO exciting. You will like the character Mulch Diggims, the tunneling dwarf who defends himself by passing gas. Moms (ok, I confess that's me) will roll their eyes a little bit more. I heard it described as "Die Hard with Fairies" and that seems completely accurate to me: lots of explosions do not literature make. It is not at all whimsical and sweet-hearted like Harry Potter, it is macho and tough, as if Bruce Willis were an elf. I had some qualms about having an 8-year-old spend 10 hours reading such stuff when I would never let him watch. As for the dwarf with the eccentric defense system, I guess I will tolerate him as long as he doesn't show up at my house! If you are a mom reading this review, you might as well let him/her read it, he will COMPLETELY pester you until you do. cb
Rating: Summary: Artemis Fowl is back and better than ever! Review: When I heard that the sequel of Artemis Fowl was coming out I was very excited and got the book the first day it was published, though I have been too lazy to write a review until now. I must say, I LOVED this book much more than the first one and will definitely give Harry Potter a run for its money. This whole new adventure of Artemis Fowl's starts with him at an Ireland boarding school when suddenly out of the blue he receives an urgent video email from a person he thought he would never ever see again in his life---his father, Artemis Fowl Sr. It turns out after his ship the "Fowl Star" sank in the arctic ocean, Artemis Fowl Sr. was kidnapped by the Russian Mafiya. (Intersting huh?) As Artemis rushes to save his father, he is once again stopped in his tracks by a familiar foe, LEPrecon fairy police, Holly Short. This time though Artemis isn't going to work against them, but must enlist in their help to track down and save his father. Of course, things aren't going to be easy, as a betrayer in the LEPrecon fairy police, must once again call Atemis' brilliant mind to work. Artemis Fowl is definitely back and better than ever. I really liked to see the lighter side of Artemis Fowl and this book was another adventure full of magic, laugh-out-loud humor, and more importantly, heart.
Rating: Summary: Artemis Fowl Review: It brings a whole new side to Artemis Fowl. Eoin Colfer proves what a talented author he really is with the wonderful and original characters you find in this book. Like the first, it is suspenseful, action packed, and fun. Here you get to see Artemis use his powers for good and play the hero! If you're a fan of the first book I recommend it. I also cannot recommend enough that you read The Price of Immortality by C.M. Whitlock. you should be probably 14 or older to read it. back to Artemis, I see it gving Harry potter a run for his money.
Rating: Summary: Artemis Fowl: Review: I liked this book. It is a bit slower than the first but it is a delightful story. It is filled with love and determination. In the beginning Artemis Fowl receives an email that says his father was alive and that he was being held for ransom. Artemis's dad had supposedly died when his boat crashed. Before Artemis can leave to save his father, a fairy captured him. The year before Artemis had stolen 15 million dollars worth of gold from the fairies. Artemis ended up helping the fairies. He did this so the fairies would help him save his father. Find out of Artemis can save his father, read Artemis Fowl The Arctic Adventure Also recommended: THE PRICE OF IMMORTALITY, by C.M. whitlock is an awesome story
Rating: Summary: Look out Harry Potter Review: Artemis Fowl was one of those rare books that leapt off the shelf when you first set your eyes upon it, and couldn't wait to get it home. There are two things that make a children's book successful: the book cover, and the author's first chapter. In Artemis Fowl, the first chapter pulled me whole-heartedly into the book and didn't let me go for air until the very end. And the cover was the thing that made me buy the book in the first place. It was very different and intriguing. Not so with The Arctic Incident. Once again we are face with a children's book cover that 'is awful'. It doesn't intrigue me at all. (If only 'The Arctic Incident' was move to the middle just below the Artemis Fowl' header, then I would have loved without complaint. However, and alas, I MUST pick up the new book anyway (despite the cover), becuase I know the author did a slam-bang job on the first, and I doubt (expecting great things) he will let me or any other Fowl fan down. Also, for a great cover with and awsome story read The Price of Immortality by C.M. Whitlock. It is full of magic wizards and everything else. The Price of immortality and Artemis Fowl will give harry potter a run for his money.
Rating: Summary: Great story... Review: Artemis Fowl is a thirteen year old criminal mastermind (one year older than last time). He's living in an Irish boarding school then receives a message about the man he thought he'd never see again. That man is his father Artemis Fowl Senior. At the same time, Captain Holly Short and Commander Root of the LEPrecon forces have a huge problem when they discover that goblins may threaten their world. Soon Artemis, Butler, and the wonderful fairies are working together. that's right, working together. Basically, if Artemis helps them with their problem, they'll help him find his father.
Rating: Summary: It was so exciting Review: I thought that it was one of the best books I have ever read. I enjoyed ever bit of it. There was all the things that a reader could want. There was thrill, excitement, love, the discovering of someone being more than thought of, mystery, joy, and many more emotions. I could not put it down because I liked it so much. If I could I would give it more than 5 stars!
