Summary: A well-loved tale, masterfully told!
Review: [Audiobook Review only]

The gravelly-voiced White has never been one to mince words or present a "disney-fied" view of life even in his kids' stories. His characters are real, their problems gritty and even his talking swans, spiders, pigs and mice are faithfully true to real life -- not the slick, "animated" version of life most kiddie authors dish out.

Trumpet of the Swan is no exception; parents who have long enjoyed the book form of this classic will love the extra zest White's flat (yet mysteriously expressive) drawl adds to the narrative. As in his writing, White speaks his story as if he really believed it, as if he really loved it, as if the uncertain fate of one plucky swan has meaning for every one of us, which -- of course -- it does.

Even the most cynical modern kids will enjoy sharing Sam's adventures, and the sheer length of this recording makes it an excellent travelling companion on long trips. On our recent vacation, we listened to it all the way out to the Canadian Rockies and back, and the kids (5 and 6) were content throughout.

As with White's other children's books, older kids and adults will get a kick out of many references (like Sam's slightly sleazy "agent") that little kids might not catch, making this a hit for the entire family. This audiobook is a bargain at any price. Don't leave home without it!

Summary: Lights, Camera, Action!!
Review: Trumpet of the Swan, by E.B. White is a romantic and hallarious story. It begins as a young swan named Louis is born. But there is something "defective" about him, he has no voice. And with no voice, trouble starts. How is he to trumpethis love to the beautiful swan Serena with no trumpet? He will go to great lengths to impress her, he even goes to school to learn how to read and write. But nothing seems to work. Soon his father takes action and buys him a real brass trumpet. Is this the key to Serena's heart?

I had never heard of a swan who spent nearly half of his life earning $4,420.78 to repay his father for the brass trumpet that he stole, until I read this book. I think it encourages people of all ages to pay their depts and live their lives truly. My compliments to E.B. White.

Summary: What a Charmer!
Review: This book UTTERLY charmed me, and I'm a guy in his 40s. I'll not give away the story (as others have done here); I'll just say that if you are young or young at heart you're sure to be charmed too.

E.B. White's books are like a tonic to me. If I start one when feeling low, I soon find myself having no need to take anything and call anyone in the morning. My spirits are lifted EVERY time.

Sadly, Mr. White couldn't live forever. But if you read his stories yourself, to your children, or to someone else's children, the next best thing will happen: his stories will live forever. They deserve no less.

Summary: music for your eyes
Review: This book is about Louis the trumpeter swan. Louis is an very rare bird and when he was born he couldn't talk and say ko-hoh. So when his father saw Sam Beaver, he wanted to show off his babies to Sam. He led his babies to Sam and Louis saw Sam, he walked toward Sam. He pulled Sam's shoelaces because he thought that Sam's Shoelaces were worms, Sam laughed because he thought it was funny. Do you know why the cob (male swan) let his babies play with Sam? Because Sam saved the cob's wife's life from a fox when it was about to eat her. He threw a rock at the fox, and it ran away. Together, the unusual friends explore Montana and Sam even helps Louis learn how to read and write. After about a year of school Louis comes back home with a chalkboard slate around his neck. He also becomes a famous trumpeter. I like it very much and it was nice.

Summary: Music Makes it Even Better
Review: Buy this one! We borrowed this tape from the library for a long car trip and loved it so much that we bought it as soon as we got home -- my husband, our 4 kids (ages 3-8) and I all really enjoyed the recording. This story is wonderful. The recorded versions are read by the author and include excellent trumpet music, as if Louie were playing to you! I bought the CD thinking my children could enjoy the book without the littlest one ruining it. My older kids have complained that they prefer tapes that let you pick up where you left off.

Summary: Classic White and Marcellino
Review: When I realized that E.B.White and Fred Marcellino are a team, I didn't walk, I ran to the bookstore. This is a great story which comes to life through the genius of Marcellino. It's a must have for children and adults!

Summary: ULTIMATE SWAN
Review: Have you seen this new edition of The Trumpet of the Swan? It's priceless.

They've taken a writer who I think was one of the greatest children's authors ever (E.B. White) and found him an artist who's got to be one of the greatest children's illustrators ever (Fred Marcellino).

This was always a special story, but the new illustrations add a whole extra dimension. They're incredibly touching....very, very evocative. I think with the art by Marcellino, The Trumpet of the Swan has become the most beautifully illustrated of all E.B. White's stories. (If you're a fan of White's books, you'll realize that's saying a lot.)

Who knew that a swan's thoughts and feelings (actually, an entire cast of swans' thoughts and feelings) could be expressed in pictures as completely as they are in these illustrations? (Not to mention the equally well-drawn collection of human characters and the settings around them.)

E.B. White's writing has a wonderful sort of American matter-of-factness and heartfelt sentiment, both at the same time. It seems to me that Fred Marcellino's illustrations bring all of this out in ways I've never fully appreciated before and (dare I say this) carry E.B. White's story to an even higher level than it's been before.

This has got to be the definitive edition of a classic. And for "children of all ages," as they say.

An absolute winner.

Summary: No trumpet for this swan
Review: Louis is a trumpeter swan. He is born one summer on a little pond in Canada, along with four brothers and sisters. But Louis has a terrible problem. Unlike the rest of his joyfully noisy family, Louis can't make a single sound. And without a trumpet sound, his true love--the beautiful swan Serena--just ignores him. Louis's father promises to help. So does Sam Beaver, a boy who loves all wild animals. First Louis goes to school with Sam and learns to read and write. But swans can't read, so Louis still can't make himself understood. That's when Louis's father puts his honor aside and steals a brass trumpet to give his son a voice. Louis's determination to pay off his father's debt to woo his own true love takes him far from the wilderness he loves. But his faith and his joy in life are always with him.
