Rating: Summary: Winn-Dixie, a winner! Review: When Opal claims ownership of the mangy dog who has created chaos of the produce department of the local Winn-Dixie grocery store, her life is about to take a turn for the better. Opal's newly-adopted canine, who smiles showing all his teeth until he sneezes, becomes the catalyst for her to meet and befriend a cast of new friends in Naomi, Florida. Perhaps the most unforgettable of all the characters is Winn-Dixie himself. Fortunately, this is one dog story in which the dog doesn't suffer a tragic fate.
Rating: Summary: Newbery winning material! Review: Wow! What a seemingly simple yet powerful story of acceptance, love, family, friends, and a myriad of other aspects of life that Dicamillo manages to capture in her wonderful book. IF ever a book deserved a Newbery, this is one, because of all it says beyond its plot of Opal and Winn Dixie. I am a children's librarian, and I have been HIGHLY recommending this book to children and adults, and want more copies for my library system! It's touching without being sappy and it did make me cry and laugh, which I find rare in modern children's literature. Check it out from your library and/or buy your own copy!
Rating: Summary: SUNDAY AFTERNOON MOTHER-DAUGHTER BOOK CLUB Review: This month we read "Because of Winn-Dixie," by Kate DiCamillo. This book is about a girl named India Opal Balone who lives in a trailer park with her dad in Naomi, Florida. Her father is the preacher at the Open Arms Baptist Church of Naomi. Winn-Dixie is a stray that Opal found in the Winn-Dixie grocery store. Opal's mother left her when she was three and she always wanted to see her. This book is wonderful, but I'd only give it four stars because it wasn't long enough! BY ELIZABETH G. AND MOM
Rating: Summary: SUNDAY AFTERNOON MOTHER-DAUGHTER BOOK CLUB'S TOP 10 Review: I thought it was a really good book. It was exciting from beginning to end. It was so good I pretty much couldn't put it down.Because of Winn-Dixie I learned that not all children's books have to have a Walt Disney happy ending. Opal learned to face her saddness and disappointment ... because of the love she felt for the Preacher and Winn-Dixie. This is a great book for 5th graders grappling with loss.
Rating: Summary: irresistable, heartwarming book Review: "Because of Winn-Dixie" is the kind of book you recommend to all your friends because you want everyone to experience the story, the characters and the feelings they evoke. Through her found mutt, the main character gets to know the new town to which she has moved, greets people she probably would not have gotten to know and learns more about her absent mother from her emotionally distant father. That dog is a miracle worker. Each person I have recommended this book to has thanked me and gushed about it. Take the time to add it to your list...any age would enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: Because of an AWESOME BOOK!!!!!!! Review: Because of Winn-Dixie is the best book I've ever read!It is about a girl named India Opal who is new in Naomi Florida who is in desperate need of friends. Opal finds a stray dog at a Winn-Dixie grocery store who is also in need of a friend. Their lives change from that point on. This is a great story about friendship. You'll want to buy a dog after reading this book.
Rating: Summary: A "Warming of the Heart" Reading Experience Review: This book is a must read! I agree with the reviews already posted and want to address other points. Opal learns in her experiences that many people have sorrow in their lives. This awareness comes to her as she learns to understand and help others who need her. She also learns that sorrow shows itself in many different forms or "flavors." Read the book . . . the candy theme woven throughout the story is fantastic!
Rating: Summary: Because of Winn-Dixie Review: This is a wonderful story of a young girl and her dog. The friends she makes because of the dog are diverse, well-developed characters. The rich descriptive language transports the reader to a small town in Florida. As a 4th grade teacher, this will be the first book I read aloud to my class when we return to school.
Rating: Summary: What a find.... Review: I am not a frequest reader of children's fiction. I picked up this book because of the Saturdays outings to Winn-Dixie with my mother as a child. A few days ago I took it off my to-be-read pile and I read it TWICE before I could put it down. This is a "must read" for children 5 to 105. "Because of Winn-Dixie" left a sweet and sorrowful taste in my heart (if this sounds corny, read the book). Fantastic work. I'm ready for another one by this author.
Rating: Summary: A Joy to Read Review: I am usually too stingy to actually buy a book, prefering to get my reading material from the library, but after reading the first chapter of WINN-DIXIE while sitting in a bookstore, I realized that this was a story that I wanted to own for myself. BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE is a beautifully written story about dogs and friendship and healing. Strong characterization, a vivid setting, and one very appealing dog make this book a winner. I resisted the temptation to read the entire book in one night, wanting to spread the pleasure out through several settings. I agree with a previous reviewer who compared the tone of the story to TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, another of my favorites. Its simple elegance also reminds me of SARAH PLAIN AND TALL. I'll be recommending this story to my friends both young and old.
