Summary: Because of Winn-Dixie
Review: I just finished Kate DiCamillo's book Because of Winn-Dixie and I loved it! This book gives you hope about the world. It also is the type of book you don't want to put down. I think it would be fun to work with a guy that was in jail and to find a dog at a store. You will have to read it yourself to find out what happens. I would recommend this book because it will suprise you just like it suprised me. This doesn't turn out the way you think it will.

Summary: Because of Winn-Dixie
Review: I give Kate DiCamillo's book Because of Winn-Dixie 3 stars. My favorite character is Winn-Dixie because he is a dog and he did funny things. My favorite part in the story is when a girl named India Opal Buloni went to the Winn-Dixie grocery store to pick up some food. Then an ugly dog came running through the store. The manager told his employees to call the pound and India did not want the dog to go to the pound. So India said that the dog was hers. I would recommend this book because it is funny, but it also is a little bit sad.

Summary: A Great Read for a Book Club.
Review: We are the *Star Readers, a book club for 4th and 5th Graders. We all attend Ocean View Elementary School in Whittier, California. Because of Winn-Dixie is about a lonely 10-year old girl named Opal Buloni who does not have a mother. Opal is almost friendless. When she goes to the Winn-Dixie market, she finds a skinny, smelly, ugly, nothing-out-of-the-ordinary dog. She names the dog "Winn-Dixie" (because she found him in the produce section of that store) and convinces her father that she should keep him. Opal compares her father (a preacher) to a turtle who keeps his head in his shell. Little does Opal know that this dog will change her life because he helps her meet friends young and old. Winn-Dixie even makes the Preacher bring his head out of his shell.

We liked Because of Winn-Dixie because it is told in the voice of Opal. It is very descriptive. We enjoyed the contrast of characters. Everyone is different and they act in their own individual way. There are older people and young people in this story who are interesting. We enjoyed Winn-Dixie as a character and he is humorous especially when he smiles and then sneezes right afterward. We also enjoyed the funny names of the characters such as "Gloria Dump." Gloria was considerate and wise. We also liked the Dewberry brothers (the "bald-headed babies") who hide the fact that they just wanted to be friends with Opal. Throughout this story, Winn-Dixie helps Opal find friends. We liked this book because there is a lot to think about.
