Rating: Summary: It is a wonderful story Review: This book is fantastic. It is a classical story that depicts a child and her pet. The bond between the girl and her dog in this story is very touching. Also I enjoy the other colorful characters in this story. I wish I had this book as a kid. It would be a great book for a parent to read to a child or a teacher to read to his or her class.
Rating: Summary: Online Book Review Review: Just like in Annie, when she finds her dog Sandy, India Opal finds Winn Dixie. This strike of luck opens up India Opal's life in Because of Winn Dixie. Because of Winn Dixie, Opal meets and becomes friends with many people. Among them are Franny Block, Otis, and Gloria Dump. She also learns from her father ten things about her mother who had left them both when Opal was a younger. I think that Because of Winn Dixie would be tasteful to young students because the main character is a ten-year-old girl and they can relate to her. Also, I think young students would enjoy this book because a dog is one of the main characters. The characters and setting in Because of Winn Dixie are unique and believable. The way the author describes Opal, Winn Dixie, and all the other characters is done in a way that makes them come alive and able to feel their emotions. Also, the setting is very believable because there really are grocery stores in Florida called "Winn Dixie" and I know this because I have seen one. The style of writing by the author, Kate DiCamillo, is excellent. Throughout the story, the sentence lengths are varied. Even though this book's intended reader is an elementary student, there are several meaty sentences in the story. Also, the vocabulary she uses is simple and clear so that most students wont have trouble understanding the text. The point of view in Because of Winn Dixie is that of Opal. Being inside the mind of a ten-year-old makes for an interesting story. I believe that students would enjoy reading the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of someone close to their age. The overall theme in this book, I feel, is very strong. DiCamillo's novel shows how one event has the potential to impact someone's whole life. Young readers might not believe that such a thing is possible, but by reading this book the concept can be made more understandable. Overall, Because of Winn Dixie is an excellent book and I recommend that any student read it. It contains several elements of literary merit, which make it not only a "good book", but an excellent one.
Rating: Summary: A great dog book!!! Review: Are you looking for a good dog book? Because if you are, this would be a great book. It has funny moments like when all the animals were loose in Gertrude's Pets and Winn-Dixie ran in the front door and chased them. It has cute and embarrassing moments like when Winn-Dixie wouldn't stop howling outside of Open Arms Baptist Church of Naomi and no one could hide their smiles so they let him in. And there are dreadful moments like when Winn-Dixie got lost. Read the book to find out what happened to Winn-Dixie and if he is lost forever.
Rating: Summary: Children's Classic Review: Initially, I thought this book would be boring. About a girl and a dog and it can't have much action and it's going to be one of those "Little House on the Prairie" type books. However, after I started reading it I just got hooked. The main character, Opal, is so cute and innocent you can't help but love her. I got engulfed by the story and couldn't put it down. Winn-Dixie, the dog, is written as an actual character who thinks and responds just like any of the other characters. I thought this was ingenious. I felt as though the story was easily related, too. I found myself being reminded of various instances in my life as I read. There are many humorous instances that a child would enjoy and the relationships of Opal and her father, her friends, and those boys that keep teasing her will find a connection with a child reader's own life.
Rating: Summary: Didn't know a grocery store could do so much...? Review: A 10-year old girl named India Opal finds a dog in a grocery store. In a scene reminiscent of Li'l Orphan Annie she saves him from the store manager and names him the first thing that pops into her head. Opal and Winn-Dixie are inseparable after this. The dog has an uncanny way of knowing what people want and need and taking care of things. This is a cute, heartwarming story set in a small south Florida town with quite a bit of local flavor. Everybody India and Winn-Dixie seem to run into has a problem. Through some minor coercion, this pair is able to get people to leave the past behind them and enjoy life once again. A lesson we could all use once in a while. Why 5 stars?: This book is excellent to read to a class of third-graders and up when coming back from lunch. It is on an independent level for most fourth graders. My only complaint is that the setting could be almost anytime in the last century and Opal always felt younger to me than she really is. But, those are not reasons to keep you from reading this book. It is highly recommended and is a quick read.
Rating: Summary: Because of "Because of Winn Dixie" Review: I read this book to my almost-8-year-old daughter (two chapters a night). It is the first time she has been hooked on a story and concerned about the characters. She tried to predict what would happen next and what would happen in a sequel. I truly found myself looking forward to the nightly reading for the same reasons she did. Because of "Winn Dixie," my daughter learned the joy of reading (and got into the back-to-school bedtime routine).
Rating: Summary: A good book! Review: I gave it 5 stars because I like it a lot. It was a good book and a happy book. It is a book about a girl named Opal. Rating: Summary: An emotional book! Review: I like this book because it has a lot of emotion. Also, I like this book because it has a dog. Winn-Dixie is a dog that can smile and show all his teeth. Opal found a dog in a store and Opal named the dog Winn-Dixie. Opal asked her dad, the Preacher, if she could keep him and the Preacher said yes. You should read this book because the characters are great!
